10/10 can't wait to try tanning/using my own wild rabbit hides later this year once I finally get one. Love seeing content from creators out here in Idaho!
Good luck! Be careful scraping those wild rabbit hides. They're so thin. I would recommend having the bark solution all made up after you kill a rabbit so you can scrape the hide and put it straight in without drying it. They're just so easy to rip when dry, especially the western cottontails we get around here. Freezing is fine too.
It must be so comforting knowing you can care for your family with literally nothing but your skills. Thanks for sharing that knowledge, and hopefully we never have to use it except for practice.
So nice. I always use paper cut out the individual cuts and makes it easier to figure out the actual inner dimension. And if you make them out of wool you got a hard pattern to make more of the same size.
@@FloydGreen-kt1cyI'm thinking aging is some sort of treatment to make the pelt retain the fur, which is what I'm looking for. I don't want to put all that work in just for the fur to fall out and end up with a leather skull cap, though on thinking about it that does sound kinda cool, and might be good scalp protection for a baldy like me. Lol
@@FloydGreen-kt1cy Untreated, yes, the hair falls out. I found the info on this channel in a series of shorts. Tanning uses the tannins in tree bark as a preservative. Looks simple, but it also looks like it will color white fur. I'll keep looking. I'm loving the apocalyptic skull cap idea. Gonna keep that in mind.
I am looking for rabbits that are usable for both meat and fur. You mentioned that you use silver fox for your buck, and your females are crosses. What are they crosses of? Are there any other types of crosses you recommend for both fur and meat?
Some good meat+fur breeds: Silver Fox - no one knows for sure what breeds were crossed to make these (some speculate Champagne d'Argenté and Checkered Giant) Argenté - from France; there are 6 different coat colorings, unsure of what breeds were crossed to make it American Chinchilla - a larger version of the Standard Chinchilla, bred for meat and fur in America. Couldn't find info on its heritage Californian - crosses of New Zealand, Standard Chinchilla, and Himalayan Rex - from France, only info I could find on it's origin is that it was from a litter of wild gray rabbits Some or most of these breeds are rare due to the fur industry falling off in the 1940s, most commercial furriers only want animals with white fur (easier to dye)
@@marycomeau9364 you can take a piece of bone or wood in a shape you like and cut out a notch where you want the stone blade. use some kind of glue (pine would be the most historically accurate) and sinue (if that’s spelled right) to secure. i’m sure there’s videos somewhere on the internet
Props to you for not putting your kid on the Internet! Can't wait to see more of what you make.

@@sagesmokesurvival what state are you from, and can you make a checklist of what you need in every video? Love your videos!
You could stitch a whole bunch together and make a giant blanket

Never thought about summer fur vs. winter fur being different, but of course it makes perfect sense. Nice project.

This is my new favorite channel! Excellent video!
I LOVE my rabbit 🐇 hair hat to sleep in when I’m truck-camping in 30° F weather at night. It’s the best! (You are very skilled :)

i would love it if You made a video on how to properly age rabitt furs. Love watching Your videos.Gretings from Croatia
Age the furs? Is there a reason for that?

Amazing! Good that you dont use your child for views.
This is so cool!
I don’t like fur factories but I support ethical livestocks
That is a stellar hat! Would it be beneficial to wax your thread before sewing, or is there a reason not to do that?
Very useful videos. Thank you so much. Salut from Türkiye.
This was great 👍 thank you for these videos
Thanks for sharing. Real nice
I was watching your pine resin video . could have you used pine glue to glue it ?
