I made HIGH-CARBON STEEL from junk metal!
My brother in law found this cool old shovel head stuck in the ground. It's the perfect thickness to cut knife blanks out of, but the steel is no good for knives. Luckily, the issue of bad steel and the necessity of knives is a time old tale, and people long ago learned how to change it steel's chemical composition with carbon and heat. This blade turned out great, and holds an edge very well. It made my file dull when I tested the hardness of the edge! Few people still teach this process, so it's hard to find exact information on how to do it. I'm helping change that with this video. Now, you can make respectable knives, axes, and swords after the apocalypse from the rubble of society!

Carburizing is a specific type of case hardening. My Grandfather was born in 1894 and he and my Great uncle ran the last blacksmith shop in the Midwest. As high carbon steel was more expensive he often would forge weld high carbon into the edge of low carbon steel, I have a hatchet he made using this technique. Great job on the video, thank you for keeping the old ways alive!
oooh, i can upgrade my stupid kitchen knife to carbon knife. thx so much
Theres a good chance that people who cant start a fire, probably shouldn't handle an axe
Salt has slot of carbon and probably helps with the heat and crystallisation
Great video im.a chef and rabbit is amazing for stew but I agree rabbits have more of an emotion toll because there so cute and have personality then chicken
Shouldn't you funnel it more? Is that the proper trigger. I'm by no means an expert, just seeking your opinion
Great job on this video. Very easy to follow instruction.
So fuzzy! Gonna make some good food and fur!
I'm pretty sure that's not black walnut. Even sap wood isn't that light. I've seen lots of your videos and you do know your stuff. So maybe a similar wood like an off hickory or crepe myrtle. But it was a little to dark for them I think 🤔.
I seriously doubt a Paleolithic hunter would be unable to make a bow in similar time, even without steel Might be a bit slower using only stone and wood, but still feel it'd work fine
Diatomaceous earth sprinkled in chopped up garlic also.
I'm surprised that pure-bred rabbits grow quicker and have bigger litters. In some varieties livestock hybrids are supposed to be more vigorous, healthier and faster growing.
I was wondering today "If I made some soft iron in a bloomery, how would I made hardening steel from it?" Here we are. Admittedly I am okay for hardening steel as scrap metal is abundant in Britain, including loads of spring steel and tool steel. Made some swords and hatchets for my TH-cam channel but I admit I've never made the steel itself before.
Don’t eat rabbits their pets. My comment I entered with my opinion is gone.
Yes I am making a second comment. (I’m too lazy to edit XD) THANK YOU!!! I LIVE SO CLOSE TO SAND!! Unfortunately, not clay… but idc. I seriously love this video. It’s so useful and oddly calming… I can’t even imagine how much practice this took but I’ll definitely try it. Thank you so much. Definitely gained a sub.
I know I’m a bit late, but thanks man. I’ve always been into pottery, survival, etc. This really helped and now I just need to get to a good area lol. Keep up your good work mate. ❤
That bow is a novelty my friend, very cool that you could make it yourself but “any big game in NA” is quite a claim.
Innards as ferilisers are pretty popular in germny. I use a fresh fish under tomatoes. Fish guts under my citric plants.
I have to compist it down first here. Burying it will draw in coyotes that will dig everything up to find it.
Oil it up
Genuine question: how do you avoid the rabbit respritory disease? Im interested in keeping rabbits for meat, but im worried about losing them if I keep them on the ground. Thank you for your time.
- Dein Messer-Review war mega informativ, danke! 🗡️🔪
What do you do with pelts? I hate to throw them away, I have Rex and Californians
boy thats some properly seasoned fire wood you got there
*bugs bunny left the chat*
Is there a way to work out how much carbon the steel has absorbed?
I need to remember how to do this and teach our son. Thank you. Despite the fact I want to vomit now.
You are my favorite Bushcraft creator. I haven't found another that has covered topics that I've been interested in as extensively as you.
I've sent push.. I've seen pull. Someone please explain the difference.

That was an AWESOME video, thoroughly enjoyed that, thanks for sharing
I heard that raw pumpkin seeds are good for chickens with worms.
As the gentleman below has stated leather can be used to harden iron into steel. I have used it to harden frizzens for flintlock rifles. It was a method taught to me about 60 years ago by an old gunsmith from the North Carolina mountains. Take a tin can left over from the kitchen. take the small steel part to be hardened and wrap it tightly with leather scraps until it will just about fit snugly into the can. Pound the open end of the can flat and fold over and pound flat again to seal the can. Try to get the seal as tight as possible. Put the can in the fireplace and leave it for about two hours or a little more in the coals of a hot burning fire. The can will become bright cherry red. Take it out and plunge the entire can into a bucket of cold water. The steel does not seem to get brittle probably because it being inside the can, it slows the plunge down a bit. Cut the can off and brush off whatever charcoal remains of the leather there is. I recently did this for the frizzen on an antique Ketland brass barrelled pistol that would not spark any more. She works fine now.
I tried this method charpowder salt and flour but the metal turned very porous
All of these 'natural dewormer' solutions do not kill parasites, they just deter them. They wil not kill already present infections. Fenbendazole is the only product that is currently approved for treatment and control of roundworms and cecal worms in chickens and turkeys in the United States.
People already wear furs I don’t get why people aren’t wearing deer skin
I feel like you’d be really hungry
I don’t know why but this feels like Idaho
It definitely doesn’t have a higher insulation value I can make a 8” thick down jacket 😂
This was perfect timing. I have heaps of low carbon steel, and I need tool steel for a lot of projects, now I know how to make it myself. What a gift🎉 cheers bud 😊
nice bow, hou can wrap the handle with leather for a more comfortable grip, speaking as a traditional archer
Don't do that
:🎉
This process is nowhere near lost to history. Recently it has been in use and in some industrial processes is still in use. The japanese used this process extensively to achieve their legendary swords by using a softer piece of steel for the sword body and splitting the cutting edges in a forge and inserting another piece of steel, carbonized by this process, and forge welding the two into one long piece of steel, forming the sword. The carbon steel formed the cutting edge which would take a sharp edge well and the low carbon steel would form the body giving the sword it's overall strength and freedom from brittleness that tempering cannot achieve on that scale. There are mixtures for the carbon that benefit the process, but I dont know what they are. This process is effectively done with a forge or oven, you can limit the carbon infiltration by heating the steel and plunging it into the carbon mixture. Your quenching process for the carbon is effective as well, but the whole blade will be brittle, even with tempering which, in my opinion, is preferrable for a carving knife. You dont hammer or pry with a knife of this sort, so the harder the blade the better in my opinion. Be sure your forming and finishing is complete before doing this because you aren't going to be doing much of either after quenching. There's a satisfaction that comes from making yourself a knife. If you haven't already done it, use this exact, easy method. Every man, before he's dead, should make himself and his son or daughter a knife. If you're watching this video, you know what I mean.
That arrow made me flinch
