【About Asian Small-clawed Otters】
First, otters are different from sea otters.
Sea otters spend most of their time in the water, but otters can live both on the ground and in water.
A few years ago, trafficking otters became a serious problem, and in 2019, CITES (Washington Convention) increased the classification of otters from CITESⅡ to CITES I, which banned international trade.
Having an otter as a pet is illegal in most countries. However, in Japan, otters can be traded, although it is limited to domestic breeds only.
Currently, severe restrictions are in place for buying and selling otters in Japan. For example, microchips need to be inserted in both babies and parents, and owners need a special permit. Circumstances of birth must also be reported in detail.
As a result, there is currently no buying and selling of baby otters in the market. There is a severe penalty for selling and buying otters with unknown birth origins without permits. This was effective in eliminating trafficking, and we don’t see otter trafficking on the news anymore.
Kotaro and Hana were both born in Japan and have permits.
It is so much work to have an otter as a pet. You need to be ready for more than its cuteness. They are loud, and they sometimes bite you. Food and water get very expensive, and you cannot keep otters in cages because they are active. Also, we never leave them at home. We always look after them closely like we do with human children, and our top priority is always them.
If you want to have an otter as a pet, you must be able to follow the law and devote your life to it. If you don’t have that resolve, you should never have one as a pet.

I love how they crave for corn in the machine at the beginning, but are absolutely terrified when it comes out as popcorn
That is because they eat fish.
Apparently they act like cats with hot food... they don't taste something that's hot, and they'll wait until it has completely cooled down, before trusting their urge to take the first bite.

Soooo........about a month ago I'm fishing in a lake for trout. I caught 5 real good sized ones and a bunch of little ones. Wild otter is fishing right next to me , for about an hour. He was catching them 5 X faster than I was , and he ate every single one of them , right in front of me. I swear he was rubbing it in. We both had a great day though.

My god, they are adorable these little otters. I arrived there by chance, but I don't regret it, I laughed, as never for a very long time.
I know they are curious, playful and very intelligent, but I didn't think you could tame them so much. It's really unbelievable.

I LOVE ANIMALS. I could see myself having so much fun interacting with those two.
Anyone who truly loves animals, would want such animals (which are not evolved to be domesticated in human homes) to be in their natural environment and admire them from a distance. To love animals is to respect them and the laws of nature.

This thing (lifeform or machine) breathes. It's breath gets very hot. Starts to 🤮 little things...some go far. Makes strange continuous sound... what's it trying to tell us. Smell is too strong and overwhelming. It gives off a vibration as it 🤮 little things.

They are the most curious of animals, more so than a cat.
Mustelids are that way. Otters, ferrets, martens, badgers, weasels, stoats... And wolverines as well. Problem is :
1) they are carnivoran. don't feed them pop-corn please
2) many species can be excessively agressive. Honey-badgers for example...

If I’m not wrong, otters are carnivores, meaning that they shouldn’t eat plant matter like popcorn. That being said, some carnivores have been known to snack on plants occasionally (like cats, for example). So long as it’s regulates correctly, they should be fine.

I've never seen otters as pets before; how healthy yours look. I thought they'd make a royal mess with popcorn, but they're cautious (b/c of noise maybe?) and rather tidy.

Otters are fascinating, but I don't think they make good house pets. These guys should be swimming in a kelp forest, or running around rocks at the water's edge.

they make okay pets from what I have seen
but I do not think most Americans should have them
just seeing the way cats and dogs are treated
exotic pets are usually highly problematic in the states (no one really takes care of them properly)
I don't know anything about otters, but I thought the same thing, they look in amazing shape and very well socialized.

@@sandypenske9797 its legal in some states and they are in Japan obviously. In Japan, all otter owners must get their pet chipped and documented. In Asia, otters are common in animal smuggling. It is the Asian small claw otters that are kept as pets due to them being the smallest in the family.

@@ethanharvest4917 😂 I’m a cat person and I like dogs too but have never had one. Yeah, it’s amazing how intelligent otters are... I also never would’ve expected that. The sounds they make is something else that gets me every time with how cute it is to hear, especially when Hana makes her cries when Daddy is rubbing her belly or scolding her (my absolute fave). Although they fear the unknown, their curiosity outweighs the general fear!
