    You are great. Thank you. Honestly I got a new job and knew I wasn't going to be able to keep up with my tanks. You made me feel okay to take a step back and prioritize everything and realize it was time to move on and not kill myself with guilt and gifted my tank and fish to people who had more time so I could succeed at other things. You made me feel okay about that. Thank you.

    Rachel, Thank you for all your bog info on TH-cam! Also, thank you for the one on one info you so generously shared via FB messenger. My bogs came thru the winter and are simply gorgeous! They were way ahead of local growers that didn't cover. Also, for only being started late summer 2021 , they look like they've been there for years. Gilda

    I always love the bog updates! I've been seriously working on my own small bogs on my balcony this year, and despite the horrible summer we had, they did okay. I'll be getting ready to insulate them very soon.
    In your opinion, do I need to keep an eye on the water level in the bog during the winter, like I do in the summer? Since they are on my balcony, they don't get rain, so I need to be on top of it manually.
    I noticed you don't have pinguicula in the bogs, do you not like them?

    • @RachelOLeary
      @RachelOLeary  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I dont bother with watering in yhe winter unless it's been profoundly dry, you don't want a frost heave but on an insulated balcony you may need to pay more attention to the water levels.

    I went to the ren faire in Mt.Hope a couple weeks ago and spotted a lantern fly on the floor. Stood up to stomp on it. A lady gave me a disturbed look, so I told her it was invasive. She then looked understanding and asked if it was a spotted lantern fly. When I said yes, she nodded her head approvingly.
    I ended up killing dozens there, and got people to join in and help!

    Hi Rachel. I've been following the development of your bog gardens, brilliant!
    Advice please, I've created a deep indoor bog in a large deep planter. No drainage but a deep base of charcoal. The bog is consuming all the water added. Do I still water over the next coming months? I have no heating just a mini electric heater which is seldom used. Large E S W facing bay window.

    Just got my first Venus fly trap a few weeks ago, and it’s starting to die back as it gets colder in the Pacific Northwest. It’s in a very small pot though (like 4”) so I’ll not too sure how to winterize it and still be able to check on it.

    Have any of your pitcher plants ever made seeds? I only have 3 plants but this year they put out 8 flowers in total and I was hoping they would make seeds, they flowered last year but nothing came of it, I tried cross pollinating them this year but their pollen is in like big chunks, you can't sort of dab it with a brush so I just sorta collected it and threw it into the other flowers lol Nothing seems to have happened.

    does the wind not blow it all away , im in the UK now is the time we get really high winds and rain and frost , if the plants were in tubs would they be ok inside a brick built building with not much light and would they still need covering . ive put my strawberry plants in there as the temps can get down to -8 F through the night. i hate the cold weather tbh.

    • @RachelOLeary
      @RachelOLeary  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Since they don't grow when dormant, the light isn't important until the temp threshold for growing it at 45f/7c. I don't have issues with it blowing away, but they are all sort of wedged together. You could certainly secure it if needed

      @@RachelOLeary That's amazing! I often wonder how these plants ever survived in the wild (obviously our climates wouldn't have allowed that species to grow here as a perennial so it's not a relevant quandary) but hey, if it works, it works. That's why I watch these things.
