I built a large bog the other day but I couldn't find any information on how wet to get the peat. Your video is the best one I could find showing the ideal hydration level. Thank you!
This is a really good video covering the basics. I followed this kind of plan myself and found it helpful. But I also found maintaining the plants to be tricky because of a couple factors, or at least some issues came up. To start with, there is the pot. If it's outside, then it seems it could risk getting flooded from rainwater and drowning the plants. One way to keep it from getting flooded could be to put holes at half of the height of the pot. But the risk then is that the water could just run out through the holes and dry out the contents. The pot could dry out if you aren't careful about keeping it watered. One way to try to address this problem is to put a terrarium glass over it, which also has the benefit of keeping the humidity at a good level. But the problem there is that if it's outside, then the glass could make it really hot inside of the terrarium and essentially bake the plants. Then another problem is that the soil can freeze in the winter. If you plant it in the ground, then it's not as much of a problem because in the ground, it's only the top layer that ices. But the problem is that in a jar, the contents are more susceptible to freezing and thus killing the plants. Admittedly the tubs in this video are so big that this might not be an issue. All the best.
Great Video, I am working on putting one of these together now so it can have all spring to establish. I would love to know what zone your in and how/if you prepare for winter. I'm in north Georgia zone 7b. Do you think the garden would survive winter without having to move or cover it each fall? Also please let me know where you sell seeds, I love the idea of growing everything from seed. Thanks in advance.
Howdy. I'm in coastal SC, zone 8. Our native carnivorous plants will have no problem surviving your winters. Just keep the soil moist. Shoot me your address and I'll send you some VFT seeds. You can just sprinkle them on the soil surface and with luck they will germinate. Or germinate them on moist peat enclosed in glass jars.
Amazing video!

Great video! Made me realise I've been overthinking things, and I should actually just get some plants in a trough and get started! 😂
Nice gardens and very interesting. You have a green thumb for sure, especially growing those from seed.

Nice. I always use distilled water or rain water. I’m assuming watering the bog garden first time with tap from the hose be won’t affected by it.
