For people who are lost, here's some of the rules that were broken: 0:00 don't bunt when greatly ahead/don't get your power hitter to bunt 0:15 Act like you've been there. Don't admire your homerun or showboat. (It's perfectly acceptable to celebrate on a walk-off or game winning play) 0:24 don't tag too hard (this is what Machado thought, turns out he was just being a hothead and apologized later) 0:35 Pitchers should wait until the manager gets to the mound before leaving 0:46 Don't bunt to break up a no hitter 0:57 Takeout slides have been illegal for about a year 1:06 Excessive tag. Belcher used a racial slur against Chan Ho Park, which started the fight 1:18 Don't admire a home run (act like you've done it before. That was Fernandez's first home run so there should've been some slack) 1:32 I don't know (probably don't throw a tantrum when you fly out) 1:38 Bat flip/Showboating 1:58 Don't tag excessively 2:11 Don't take your sweet time getting into the batter's box, also some shit talking 2:19 Don't steal third with 2 outs/Don't steal when greatly ahead or behind 2:28 Not an unwritten rule, that was just disrespectful
If you can steal third with two outs, go ahead and steal third. No disrespect there. It's called manufacturing runs. (stealing any base with a huge lead is another story...)
Stealing third is really hard, and not really a good idea with 2 outs. You don't want to be that guy who ended the inning because you thought you could snag it
The Cynical Martian for the first one..if you don’t want me to bunt don’t play a shift..bunting is smart against the shift no matter the score. That’s the beauty of baseball, you can be down a lot late in a game and still end up winning. So you never stop competing until that final pitch is thrown
For those who need an explanation, because this video did a terrible of of explaining what the "Unwritten" rules were broken are, here you go: 0:00 Either bunted to break up a no hitter or to beat the shift. Sometimes the defense will "shift" (for example the third baseman will move toward center field) to set up a strategic play or because they think the batter might hit the ball in that direction. Beating the shift is when you bat the ball into the empty part of the field created by the shift. 0:13 Stared at his home run too long before he ran the bases. 0:24 Third baseman didn't run toward third, instead ran directly to runner to try and force him out of the baseline. 0:41 Knew the pitching coach was going to do a pitching change and left before he came to the mound. 0:46 Not sure on this one, probably bunted to break up a no hitter or perfect game. 0:58 Late slide. Slid into the second baseman to try and break up the double play. 1:07 Tagged him for too long. More like a long touch than a quick tag. 1:16 Stared at his home run and stayed at the plate. 1:27 Bat flip but did it side armed and probably too hard. 1:37 Bat flip. Bat can flips CAN be seen as insulting, but usually not like that. Puig and Bumgarner are playing for division rivals and theyv'e had issues with each other in the past. It could have been the way he did it. 1:48 Not sure on this one. Pitcher might have caught it for an out and either him or the battle yelled an insult to the other. 1:57 Touched second base in time to be safe, but the tag attempt was too aggressive when it wasn't really THAT close. 2:07 Conversation between batter and catcher, batter probably told him to hurry up. 2:18 Steals third pretty easily, but Tampa is already 5 runs ahead of Boston. 2:28 Was walked, and put the bat in front of the catcher instead of placing it out of the field of play. 2:36 Not sure on this one. Threw behind the batter? Please correct me if any of these are wrong. I did my best.
If "don't steal when greatly ahead or behind" is an unwritten rule, the same should apply to swinging for the fences in that situation. Did McGwire and Sosa ever hold off from swinging too hard if their teams had a big lead or deficit in 1998?
Alex Yerkey Well both are hall of fame players with multiple World Series, and a combined 1,100+ homers... Nobody other than a legit baseball fan even knows who Gomez is..
I can't believe I'm saying this, because I usually appreciate cutting out the fat, but you edited out too much context with some of these. That being said, love your videos!
"Breaking rules that aren't written down - here are some short clips with no explanation of what rules are broken" disliked because how the hell are we meant to know what the hell we're looking at
I'll admit that one really has to play the game or watch a lot of it to understand without explanation. I've played and watched for 30 years and It's mostly about etiquette but a lot of these clips I can tell it's personal/bad blood between players/teams (rivalries). There are all kinds of unwritten rules like not lingering in the batter's box to watch your hit become a home run (if it's obviously not going foul) and don't tag someone harder than necessary or try to shove them off the bag after they're called safe. Don't chuck your bat at the other team's dugout if you're mad about the call or in celebration. There's a whole unspoken thing about intentional hits by pitchers (usually retribution) which is complicated and kind of childish. Check out some ejection compilations and you can see a lot of these rules written or unwritten being violated. It's my favorite sport and I love it so much and I'm sorry if I came off like a jerk and I'm more than willing to spell anything out for you if you're truly interested.
Hey charles, what i am interested is in the bunts. I saw some clips where the batter will bunt the ball and get to first base, yet that was crossing the line; why? Thanks!
I saw a comment somewhere on this video that said you couldn't see the score in the clips and apparently the teams bunting had a pretty good lead so there's really no need to be bunting so it's frowned upon.
You're cutting the clips off too short. Let the play run first, have the announcers discuss it, and then show a final replay. There are a lot of great clips in here that I would've liked to see the aftermath of that got cut off. Just a suggestion, great video!
T Hakenson Machado ran right into the tag, which made it a much easier play than making the relatively long throw to first. And it's way less risky because Machado could score if anything went wrong with the throw. And the only reason he "jumped in front" of him is because Machado was trying to avoid the tag. It was just a bad play on Machado's part.
I watched a minor league game yesterday there were two stupid plays. In the bottom of the 9th the lead off hitter got a base hit and they didn't count it because of a ball in the backstop. The damn ump said, time! And even the other team was weirded out.in the 7th the away team bunted and there was a horrible throw from the pitcher but they callled the base runner out for interfering with the throw!
I'm sorry, but what's wrong with bunting or drag bunting for a hit other than in certain situations? (breaking up a no hitter; doing it with a massive lead, etc.)
For me, stealing third with two outs in the bottom of the 7th when you're team is winning 8-3 really isn't that bad. That's hardly a blowout. Bottom of the 8th might be just a bit different, because the other team only has 1 inning left. But bottom of the 7th, when the other team has 2 innings to score 5 runs? Come on.
Celebrating after a huge homerun whether because it was clutch or simply because it was an absolute bomb I feel is ok. In fact when bautista crushed that ball vs Texas throwing his bat, it was the most entertaining moment baseball has ever had in my opionion
I think you could do an entire video on Odubel Herrera. I can't wait for him to be gone from our Phillies. We are bad enough but then you got this guy on the team to make it worse.
Joseph Boddy I've played baseball my entire life too high school. Cougar4 Cougar4 sorry for that rant haha but unwritten rules are like manners in a way like Youre suppose to know you don't eat with your mouth open . Others are don't stare at the home run ball, no bat throwing , not showing emotion , not bunting during a no hitter , can't talk trash , don't leave the pitching mound until the manager is there , not tagging a player who isn't on the base path , sliding into players , blocking the catcher from throwing a base stealer , and of course NO CELEBRATION. Some are okay like being disrespectful but other rules are jut straight retarded

Can someone please explain the unwritten rule being broken at 2:18 when Escobar steals third? Is it just that he's stealing third in a game that's not close?
Baseball has so many weird rules. I am not american, I am Turkish and living in Turkey. I have realized some weird rules of baseball when I watch Moneyball, and then read it. Guys who are in this game need to update themselves in time.
The posters who are saying that baseball players are too sensitive are not old enough to remember the NFL when it was a real man's game. They once asked Hall of Fame linebacker Dick Butkus what would've happened if an opposing wide out did a flip in the end zone after catching a TD pass during his days. His reply, "We wouldn't have intentionally broken his leg. I'm dead serious. And the officiating crew would have done nothing to stop it. No ejections or anything. It's why no one celebrated in the end zone back then. Nowadays there is zero payback because if you try to get back at a disrespectful player, they fine you and sit you out 6 games, which can legitimately hurt your team's playoff run in football because unlike MLB, the NFL only plays so many games." Also, the unwritten codes of baseball have been in play since the game's creation. It's not about hurt feelings. It's about honoring the games codes and traditions, and honoring the players who have come before. The Cy Young's. The Don Drysdale's. The Willie Mays'. The Roger Hornsby's. The MLB front office are a bunch of jerks who are dishonoring the game by not allowing the players to sort out their own business. It's the way this great American game has always been played since it's inception. For heaven sakes, can we have a sport where athletes don't show off
No, it’s about hurt feelings. It’s about pitchers who can’t take responsibility for playing badly so all they have is to say that batters “disrespectful” because they dare celebrate a home run. Does it not spark some idea in your brain that maybe Butkus should play better and shut his fucking mouth when a player celebrates. If you intentionally injure someone because they celebrated, you’re not only pathetic, but you shouldn’t be playing at all. Don’t give me this bullshit about “dishonour” if you don’t want your opponents to score then learn to fucking play better, players are getting paid millions, I think you can handle a celebration. For heaven’s sake, can we have a sport where players don’t intentionally injure opponents for basically no reason.
Arizona was mad that Ben Davis broke up a no-hitter w a bunt late in the game. But the Padres were only down 2-0 so if Davis gets on base that puts the tying run at the plate. So Brenley and the D-backs acting like D-bags over nothing.
A lot of these were petty - you get tagged too hard in the basepath? I liked Boche making the pitcher come back to the mound, the catcher breaking the bat left at the plate, and the player pulled from the game for not running out a tap to the pitcher.
If you don't like it when a player struts when they hit a homer off of you, then strike them out. When you throw at them, you reveal yourself to be a weakling.
I looked it up. May 9, 2015. The benches cleared, and after that, Rangers manager Jeff Banister thought the same thing I did, and challenged the safe call. But it was upheld! Funny thing, when play resumed, Beckham (the batter you see in this clip) hit it to the shortstop Andrus (who you also see right at 2:06), who threw behind Cabrera (the runner on second) to the second baseman he had pushed (Rosales), who tagged him out! Then the pitcher hung out Beckham with a pickoff, and got tagged out after a short rundown. So the Rangers infielders had the last laugh this inning. But, the Rays ended up winning 7-2 anyway.
Can somebody tell me each of the clip's unwritten rule? Sorry, please stick with me since I'm new to baseball and I'm starting to watch a lot of videos; this one made me curious. TIA!
Moon Byulyi Mostly its a sportsmanship thing. Jose essentially taunting another pitcher (regardless of the fact it was his first). Cabrera got angry at having his fingers smashed by the ball though it didnt seem on purpose, so the rule there would be tagging somewhere other than on the fingers while on the ground/plate like that. The bunting one was the guy bunted (while his team was 0 vs the other team having 7) just to break up the pitcher's NH (no hitter). Which imo was the scummiest thing, because regardless of the arguments people make about getting a hit no matter what, it was done pretty clearly out of spite against such a good pitcher.
what was the manny machado one? LOok s like Josh barely tagged him and its Manny who jumped out of the line. Looks like he was just pissed that he made himself look like an idiot.
Do homeruns on the first pitch
Andrew Leo He just did this! Check out today's new video. 😎⚾️

and the last one was i think its phantom tagging which isnt allowed

thank you! this was very comprehensive
As someone that doesn't know much about baseball, this video would have been better if it had caption to say what unwritten rules were being broken
If "don't steal when greatly ahead or behind" is an unwritten rule, the same should apply to swinging for the fences in that situation. Did McGwire and Sosa ever hold off from swinging too hard if their teams had a big lead or deficit in 1998?
José Fernandez's clip was fine. It was his first homerun. At least it's not like Carlos Gomez who stares at every homerun
Brandon Gonsalves And the pitchers or catchers don't have to be whiny bitches about it either. As can be said for most of these clips.
Brandon Gonsalves The point is its His first and because of that his reaction is going to be different to that than say, someone with 80 Home runs.
I would admire every homerun I hit. (if it got the pitcher rattled) gamesmanship at its best.
Pujols and Ortiz were the worst at staring at their homeruns
Alex Yerkey Well both are hall of fame players with multiple World Series, and a combined 1,100+ homers... Nobody other than a legit baseball fan even knows who Gomez is..

Bat boy: "WTF?!"
The one where the catcher breaks the bat while crouching is pretty cool

this is the only video you have that I can't like .. too quick and no explanation to what is going on .. .
I don’t get why Ben Davis’s bunt was a problem - yea it broke up a no hitter, but it was still a way to get on base which could lead to runs.
Catcher at 2:32 is how I felt. 😂
This was cool. Can you do another?
Nothing wrong with the tag on Machado....
22burnsie there was 2 outs jumping in front of a runner on a non double play is how you get someone hurt
T Hakenson It's the easiest play

What was the unwritten rule in the first clip?
Declan M. Olson It is apparently rude to beat the shift with a bunt.
They were up 7-0 in the first inning and he bunted it just didnt show the score
Sporting Videos Thank you, friend! ☺
That unwritten rule is in effect in the 7th inning and on if your up huge. Not the 1st inning as there's tons of game left to come back.
Or if Run Differential matters (in the case of the World Baseball Classic that led to a fight between Canada and Mexico).
This is a great idea for a video. Part 2 please
Show the rest of the clips. What happened? How did they end? I want to see the whole thing.
I'm sorry, but what's wrong with bunting or drag bunting for a hit other than in certain situations? (breaking up a no hitter; doing it with a massive lead, etc.)
Fenway Park left side homeruns? Or is there too many
Could you add annotations and tell us what each rule is? Thank you.
Come on.
I've seen teams get 10 runs without making an out.
Another unwritten rule is don't break wind when you''re a catcher squatting in front of the umpire.
Gomez did not break any rules, watching his homeruns is just something he does.
This is why we love baseball. It's the only self policing sport where penalties aren't necessary.
:26 so what was Machado's problem there?? hard tag?
Celebrating after a huge homerun whether because it was clutch or simply because it was an absolute bomb I feel is ok. In fact when bautista crushed that ball vs Texas throwing his bat, it was the most entertaining moment baseball has ever had in my opionion

Arizona was mad that Ben Davis broke up a no-hitter w a bunt late in the game. But the Padres were only down 2-0 so if Davis gets on base that puts the tying run at the plate. So Brenley and the D-backs acting like D-bags over nothing.
How can you know about unwritten rules when they are not written?
Would have been nice to have some context with many of these clips.
What happend @ 0:50 what was the deal there ?
Chris Deleon i think he broke up a late game no hitter with a bunt. Im not sure tho
The batter bunted the ball in the end just so the pitcher doesn't have a no hitter
It was a perfect game in the 8th with 2 outs.
It's one thing if the score was 1-0 or 0-0, but in a 2-0 game, you can't bunt to break up a perfect game, that is horse shit
Do "grand slams on first pitch of the game"
Best pitcher plays
What was the rule at 0:47?
Bunting to break up a no hitter when down by 3 or more
The fake tag ! That always pissed me off
I wish I knew what I was watching ... love the Channel but what are the 'unwritten rules?' .. oh, i play baseball, but in Australia ...
Lol I love pitchers getting mad at batflips. Maybe he shouldn't have given up the hr
Context! No context for most of these, please show the entire clip setting up the play or it makes little sense what the violation was
What's the ben Davis one
I hated Jose Fernandez after that hr until I learned what he did after the game then I was one of his biggest fans. RIP Jose
Sproting videos this is such a great video love how you show us new rules about baseball
Who is the commentator at 1:48?
I honestly thought puigs was ok. He took a little peak at it after the bat flip. Gomez and fernandez made a 5 second show out of there HRs
I don't get the last one
A lot of these were petty - you get tagged too hard in the basepath? I liked Boche making the pitcher come back to the mound, the catcher breaking the bat left at the plate, and the player pulled from the game for not running out a tap to the pitcher.
If you don't like it when a player struts when they hit a homer off of you, then strike them out. When you throw at them, you reveal yourself to be a weakling.
What unwritten rule for 0:27?
Can someone explain what the first guy did wrong.
Donaldson wasn't really breaking an unwritten rule Machado was being a bit of a child
Is there an unwritten rule about having a little class and respect? Because, that would be great.
Do a vid on trolling during interviews
Image if MLB people pitchers saw how the MLS celebrated goals
1:59 Ump should have called him out! He broke contact with the base and pushed the infielder holding the ball.
But, the Rays ended up winning 7-2 anyway.
take out slides are normal among baseball
Do fastest pitcher changes, please
Can you make the clips any shorter?
How can you break a rule that isn't written which therefore you broke no rule
what was the manny machado one? LOok s like Josh barely tagged him and its Manny who jumped out of the line. Looks like he was just pissed that he made himself look like an idiot.
What's wrong with Ben Davis's bunt?
What is wrong with a first inning bunt?
You tube, Major league pitcher used my football slider, Learn the Key WRIST TILT used by Corbin, Hand, Miller.
Most of these are hilarious
Before I was banned from baseball I used to fart on the Baseball before I threw a pitch
McCann is such a baby lol
