    Every sport has a number of “unwritten rules”. Even if something isn’t mentioned in the rule book, athletes are expected to follow certain standards. They don’t face repercussions from the league for breaking these unwritten rules, of course, but they receive retaliation from the opposition -- along with plenty of media backlash.
    Well, we think a handful of unwritten rules in sports are outdated and straight up ridiculous. It’s time for teams to simply agree to scrap such rules and call it fair game.
    Today we present the 10 most ANNOYING "Unwritten Rules" in sports.

      This is the way it is because the play is dead -shooting the puck (regardless of padding) can produce injury needlessly after the whistle (more so in days gone by). A galoie (or any player in the way) will let their guard down exposing themselves to an increased likelihood of injury! I have been hit by pucks and injured during play. When the play is dead and someone shows that disrespect for safety, I would always become very aggressive.

      I caught that. Looking it up, bill James Fielding Bible. There is a .438 average in non sacrifice situations for bunts overall. So, generally yes it's easier to get on base in a bunt. Though I'd say bunting in non sacrifice situations is rarer. Only 800 something hits in 2011 at least and thus more of a surprise. If they know you are likely to they'll catch you better. Thence why the avg. Is ridiculously low in sacrifice situations, when you are more likely to try and move the runner over.

      The 1993 World Series, Blue Jays vs Phillies, game 4 is a classic example of no lead is safe. Blue Jays open up the 1st with a 3-0 lead, the phillies answer in the bottom of the 1st with 4 runs, then another 2 the next inning, then the Jays take a 7-6 lead with a 4 run 3rd inning, then the phillies retake the lead with a 1 run 4th and a 5 run 5th, taking a commanding 12-6 lead. Then the Jays close the gap in the 6th with a 2 run inning, only to have the Phillies widen it again with a 1 run inning in their half of the 6th, then add another run in the 7th to go into the 8th inning with a 14-9 lead, only to have the Jays score 6 runs in the 8th to round off the scoring and complete the comeback, and combine to set a major league record for the most runs in a single world series game.

      As someone who was a very successful bunter, it's not just about safety. You lose the strength to hold the bat steady and "catch" the pitch. Pinching the bat allows for maximum control of the barrel. Yes, it's not that big of a deal if your fingers slide a little around the bat but your best control is pinching at the middle (or neck) of the bat.

  • @jameshobbs225
    @jameshobbs225 4 ปีที่แล้ว +88

    Well to be fair the first hockey one is more of a safety issue. When you whistle everyone relaxes. No one is expecting a 90+ mph puck to slam into their chest because jackass needs to practice his shooting after the whistle.

      " because jackass needs to practice his shooting after the whistle.
      "

    • @Seriously_Unserious
      @Seriously_Unserious 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Intentionally shooting after the whistle I think is a possible penalty at the ref's sole discretion, as it's a safety issue. From what I understand, if the shooting motion was already started before or as the whistle was blowing, or very loud crowd noises made it hard to hear the whistle, then they'll rarely call it, especially if the player did ease up on the shot and let it go as a softy. Where they will likely call a penalty is if the player lets one rip full power clearly after the whistle that was clearly audible and was clearly directed at an opposing player. I believe the penalty assessed is Unsportsmanlike Conduct in that situation. That is an exceedingly rare call though as most players don't let a big shot rip well after the whistle.

      The idea is it's easier to lay down a bunt than get a hit, so statistically you have a better chance of breaking up a no no with a bunt because the pitcher is throwing...magic? also i think part of it is the idea that the defense isn't paying as much attention due to the lack of hits. But i would say in the few near perfect games i've seen in my life you could make a solid argument that a bunt is a much easier way to get on, just due to how locked in the pitching was and how well their stuff was working. Just mo though.

      It's not that the roids made him slower, it's that he got slower as he got older, and more susceptible to injury as he got older, which is why he both started taking PEDs (to help with his recovery and conditioning) AND why he stopped base stealing (the reduced cost-benefit of getting 90 extra feet vs. pulling a hamstring and missing two weeks of games).

    What should easily be on the list: "Don't swing 3-0"
    You know the pitcher is going to throw a meatball right down the middle because they're just trying to get a strike. Not swinging on that is just criminal, and it sucks that people still get hate for knocking one past the outfield when swinging 3-0 because it's an "unwritten" rule.

    • @koa022
      @koa022 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is the coach's decision if you can or not swing at a 3-0 pitch . If you are a strong hitter, you will have the green light, but the othet team will know it, and you won't get a meatball right down the middle . If you are an average hitter, you won't get the green light, because you play the probabilities : you have more chance to reach first base on a walk, than to get a hit on a 3-0 pitch

    • @OtKH00
      @OtKH00 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@koa022 I get what you're saying, but that's not always the case. Look at what happened to Tatis Jr. earlier this year, because he hit a homerun off a 3-0 pitch and got accused of trying to "run up the score". He had to publicly apologize, and no one on his team defended him for it. If he hit that homerun on a 2-0 count or a 3-1 count, no one would have been upset. However, by virtue of being 3-0 now all the sudden he's broken an unwritten rule.

    • @koa022
      @koa022 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@OtKH00 I didn't saw that, but from what I read in your comment, the problem is not the 3-0 swing, it is the running up the score, that is the real unwritten rule here . When you have a big lead after the 6th inning, or even after the 5th if the lead is huge, you don't run up the score, meaning you don't bunt, you don't steal the base, you don't run aggressively to get the extra base, you don't slide at 1rst base for base hit, and you don't swing at 3-0 pitches
