I can't believe all the negative comments on here. This song was absolutely HUGE when it came out. It sounded like nothing else on the radio. Springsteen was a little known niche artist and then, with this song and this album, he just exploded. The E Street Band is legendary. When I see everybody saying "meh" I feel like I've landed on a strange planet.

This was an actually musically incredible album that garnered the Album Of The Year for 1975. This, like so many albums of this time, were meant to be heard from start to finish, and this is one of those albums - it’s just beautiful, and there’s no other album that sounds like it. A true original.

I've personally never been to one of his concerts. However, my older sister went and she was not a fan at all of Springsteen, at the time. She went because her friend was a huge fan. My sister came out of that concert a huge fan saying it was the best concert she's ever been to and loved all the stories he told with each song he sang. That always left a big impression on me...for someone who was indifferent to an artist come out of a concert with such a change. The power of music and storytelling.

With her killer graces and her secret places that no boy can fill. with her hands on her hips oh and that smile on her lips because she knows that it kills me. With her soft French cream standing in that doorway like a dream I wish she'd just leave me alone. Because French cream won't soften them boots and French kisses Will not break that heart of stone. •  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Those people don't know voices. At all.
Like, do they hate Tom Waits? Probably, he *really* has a fucked up voice. But that singing is *so* iconic, and perfect for his style of music.

    • @stellarsuun

@ same with Neil Young I think they all have awesome voices with their unique tones that people aren't used to hearing because they assume good singers like Whitney Houston or Mariah Carey, when there are singers like Bowie, Neil Young, Tom Waits, Patti Smith, Nick Drake, Springsteen that have something more there

In general their reviews are very shallow. They should stick to guitar solos and metal(which I love bit for different reasons). Anything with depth escapes their grasp. Your comment is correct. It's the ultimate giving of yourself to someone in the desperate moments when ot seems that the love you're in is all you have, need or want.
The drinking comments are ridiculous, considering Bruce probably drinks less than almost any other artist. Shallow. I'm not above criticising reviewers. I've been listening to Bruce since 1980. He's probably the greatest artist in the history of rock. Did you know that he had 7 top 10 hits off the album Born in the USA. Only Michael Jackson has equalled that. He's also the only artist in history to have every album he released in the charts at one time. That was after 7 albums. He played to 300,000,000 people when the wall went down on old East Germany. Born to run put him on the cover of both time and news week magazine in 1975. He's one of the top grossing artists in history. At 65 yrs old, his international concert tour grossed more than anyone except Madonna. Both of them outperforned, by far, any modern artist.
Bruce is thd only artist to have a 24/7 Sirius XM Channel which plays 95% hos music. All other Sirius artist channels play a mix or only last a month or two.
Bruce's concerts, to this day sell out in minutes. Regardless if it's 20,000 or 100,000. His stint at Giants stadium in, I believe 2009, sold out in minutes. 80,000 a night 7 nights straight.
If you want to hear some really good stuff, Check out his live video. Too many songs to mention as there are several hundred that are well know. Off the top of my head, he has 29 studio albums. "Ghost" his latest, at 70 yrs old came in at #1 in the UK and #2 in the USA, also topped charts globally. Check out live performances from 1978, which were arguably some of his greatest performances. Prove it all night, badlands, 10th avenue freeze out, Racing in the street, the mini rock opera "Jungleland". Growing up, blinded by the light, Candy's room,. Later, The River, independence day, Sherry Darling, out on the street, wreck on the highway, Cadillac ranch, Ramrod, Nebraska, Johnny 99, Atlantic City, Human Touch, Wrecking ball, if I should fall behind, the ghost of tom joad, magic, girls in their summer clothes, Brilliant disguise, One step up, Wrecking ball, etc, etc....then dc the new album.....ghosts, letter to you, janey got a gun, in my dreams. You can dig deeper. Google Springsteens top 325 songs. A critic catalogued them and ranked in order. You owe it to yourself to check out his body of work one album at a time from over 50 years. Have fun as millions of us have on this journey!

When you can no longer just be yourself and do the things you want to do because some girlfriend or wife has you by the nuts, you'll wish you never met her. All the gloss wears off over time. I don't know who was his advisor back then, I vaguely remember (45 years ago folks!) that shortly after this track came out, someone associated to his label did a disastrous push of Springsteen in the UK with the strapline "Is the UK ready for Bruce Springsteen" Various quotes and testimonies turned up in the press about this "new Bob Dylan" The hype completely bombed, I think that tour dates were cancelled as a consequence. The live versions of "Born To Run" do get that anthemic power across visually, but part of me wonders if Alex and Andy are simply hearing "Born To Run" and certain other songs (such as "Eight Miles High," by the Byrds) so far outside of the overall cultural and musical contexts that gave rise to those songs that they just can't really "get" what older listeners see and love so much in them. "Born To Run" came out of, and was a response to, a very specific cultural and musical context in '75, as "Eight Miles High" was, in a different way, in '66. Hearing songs like those two for the first time, cold, not having grown up with them, and with possibly little to no experience of their original contexts, in 2021-- I think I would probably not "get" some things about them too.
