i’ve watched under this luminous sky several times. it deserves so much more recognition. if i had the funding, i’d make it a whole series. but one of my favorite parts is that it starts in the middle of the story, and the beginning and end are completely up to the viewer’s imagination. one can infer some things, invent others, and speculate many.
finally, ive found my people! i have been obsessed with these short films and their immaculate artistry for years now, but i can't seem to get my friends who are less animation-inclined to get into it i love every single one of these films to bits, and its lovely to hear someone ramble the same thoughts that have been turning in my mind
really nice to listen to this perspective. as someone who's still fixing up my film for its festival run even after getting sorely burned out on it, this video was really motivating. thank you.
Emily Xu has been one of my favorite artists for a few years now, and the way that she uses visual symbolism and can show who a character is through their expressions, actions and design is phenomenal. Also the way that Fueled fucking DESTROYED me, I can’t watch it without uncontrollably sobbing 😭
I was just gonna vibe and watch this casually while I cook, but then I see SUNDOWN in the screenshot and my heart just does a little ":D!" it's one of the short films I revisited many times before.
Hey! I'm currently in 1st year of university for animation so I've been at your place emotionally, wondering if i was born too late to create art. But I recommend you to watch a creator named Doodley's latest video about motion capture, new technologies in the art industry and its similarities to AI. The insights coming from a former animator really helped me, so i hope it will be the same for you too :)
3rd year animation student here!! its alright to be scared - it would be ignorant to ignore that it IS a mess right now. but animation is a medium, not a genre, and every medium has their place in the industry, especially animation. I went to a talk by Alex Hirsch's a few weeks ago and another student asked him about the industry right now - and even he admitted, that its shit, and getting in will be hard, but it wont always be. There are highs and lows to everything in life, and after the high animation experienced during lock down where it was the only remaining corner of the film industry still functioning, we've hit a low but we will bounce back! !! I mean - look at how well The Wild Robot and Inside out 2 have done at the box office? or how successful Arcane, Bluey, and other shows on streaming services are? So long as we keep on animating, there will always be animation
No, you absolutely are! It’s hard work, for sure, but if you stick with it, even the idea of completing something of that caliber will make it more than worth it. You got this!
Go!! Tell the story you wanna tell. Don't worry if its gonna be better than all the other ones. What matters is that it has a heart and it tells a story you believe can help the world somehow. Whether it can make people smile, or alert people about an issue, or heal people from pain or help them realize that they aren't alone in their struggles. Every story has a purpose!! And you can start yours. We're with you. Good luck, fellow artist!!
As someone who just finished my thesis film, I can say that the energy and excitement you get from watching yours and everyone else's projects at the end of a hard year is unmatched :) these films show how much fresh talent there still is in the world.
Under This Luminous Sky has to be my, not only favoutite student film, but also my favourite film to study. I once wrote an article for a school homework about the film and my professor loved it! Glad people are giving it and many more films attention that they deserve!
Brother, i have an entire playlist ive compiled of animations from all across youtube which i love and it all started because of "under this luminous sky", that one film was so bloody beautiful
I started to watch Under This Luminous Sky because I saw the soundtrack of the short film on Spotify and the music was beautiful so I decided to watch Under This Luminous Sky and I love the short film
This essay is so well done (also found a lot more thesis films to watch) but god damnit, i wasn't even a minute into this video before getting Vietnam flashbacks to fnaf (0:47)
I'm going to a college with an animation program that got absolutely demolished by covid, it got so bad that they don't even offer a degree in animation. They combined it with the video arts section of the college, making us take classes that we really shouldn't be taking. Alongside this, the school is far more geared towards illustration and painting rather than animation. Yet again, this school doesn't require a portfolio to get into, and I had no real portfolio before this. I get a lot of thesis films in my feeds which absolutely pale in comparison to what I have been able to do, and it has pretty much convinced me to go to another school after this. That being said, one of the first times I had ever really delved into making my own short was a year ago, and it got a lot of praise from my friends and classmates. Though on a broader scale it is nothing much, the fact that it was even possible to create was astounding. I gained a new appreciation for the craft, even if I had to rush the ending section all in one night. That feeling of creating a fluid movement got me hooked in a way I can't describe. I can't imagine how much I could grow by going to a school made specifically for this, and honestly it would be a dream come true to create a thesis film over the span of a year rather than a few weeks. Absolutely phenomenal video too, being able to delve into other artists work and watch their dedication and their specializations shine is unmatched. Trying to figure out what they spent the most time on, what they were the proudest of, what they spent hours working on and could barely get past, all of these change from person to person. What I find the most astounding is how different the animation styles and art direction is between student films, all of them have rich personalities since they understand that they have to make the film stand out from the rest. You said it very well, "Allows people to say what they want, in any way that they want to say it." For me, that's having think brushstrokes, blending emotion into abstraction alongside being grounded, and learning to take my sketchy style into animation. I'm definitely going to be watching a lot more of your videos while I do my work!
Really glad to see Walter getting some love! It's been one of my favorites since it's release & I end up sharing it with a lot of students to show how powerful something short and effective can be. A lot of artists get compared to a "ghibli style" but I think he's very obviously influenced my Miyazaki & Takahata in a specific and understated and distinctly not soft-color-cozy ghibli way that I personallyyy think gets overlooked. It's not flashy but it's one of the most professional level student shorts out there. I think this is also one of the older shorts on this list so it's pretty cool to see Lorenzo's influence on the animation industry since then- especially in Pixar's Luca.
For sure! Professional is such a good way to put it, because it’s made in a way that really shows off exactly what the people making it would add to a larger studio. It’s really impressive stuff.
These movies absolutely made me cry when I was younger and even now, I rewatch them and a sudden wave of nostalgia hits me. P.S. i still cry whenever there are the sad ones
OMG... Under This Luminous Sky mentioned! My favorite animated short film of all time! I really love the quick world building in it and the relationship between its characters, Skylar and Arthur. I hope the story can be continue if the author makes any short animation again. Oh and as far as i know, Emily Xu, the director of Under This Luminous Sky is now work as a storyboard artist at Disney (if i'm not wrong, idk. CMIIW)
I am happy I’ve found this. I love watching student thesis films because they are so personal and beautiful. My favorite thesis film by far is one called “the little poet”, but all of the ones in this video are also my favorite. They make me so happy.
Damn shoulda mentioned welcome to hell. It’s pretty old but I did happen to find out about it through a friend a while back and it’s a unique take on dark humor. It’s witty, refreshing, and leaves you think about what death really does to someone. If you still keep kicking in some form then does the life you lived still matter? What does it mean to become friendly with those who have ulterior motives but fail to execute them? How does involuntary action change the way we see people? I think there’s a sequel in the works that looks to expand on all this but as a thesis film it’s so unique in look and story and I absolutely love it!
Yeah, seeing the amount of love surrounding these films, I’m definitely going to be making a sequel to this in the future. I’ll for add this one to the list of shorts to check out.
These films has inspired me so much since high school, and I dreamed of making one one day. I'm now on my last year (sorta) making my thesis animation film, and I can't wait to finally see the day I finish it and join the artists who inspired me :))
I've seen Under the Luminous Sky (and started an "Inspo" playlist with this one), Best Friend, Sundown (another favorite of mine), and Fuelled. Holy actual heck I love all of these so much, and I'll have to check out the other ones listed in this video, too.
I tried the extended viewing experience, and it was wonderful. Ending it with Fuelled was just the cherry on top, that *one* moment got me to tear up stronger than anything ive watched in a long while, and the buildup was such a refreshing dive into analyzing just really damn good pieces of art. Thanks for introducing me to Under This Luminous Sky, and for compiling this kick ass viewing experience. I may have to revisit this from time to time from now on.
damn I feel like I'm missing out really cuz I've always wanted to get into anim but now i'm in the game dev route. I have a few friends that are already in SCAD for animation so hopefully I don't miss out too much and I could integrate more animation into my work, but god this is so good.
Hey, as long as you’re creating stuff you care about. It could be really cool to work with different kinds of animators to make out of the box projects that push the boundaries of both mediums.
Making it all come full circle by watching this while i animate my animated thesis film. But seriously, seeing all this appreciations for all these films I look up gives me joy, the stories and the visuals are simply amazing.
It is great to see other people also appreciate student films! I watch most of my favorites through newgrounds. I also love seeing all the SVA, CalArts, and SCAD shorts when they release online
omg ive never clicked a video so fast bc im so obsessed with these short films or calarts or gobelins or whatever art school animations. ive watched both videos on the thumbnail and all the ones shown in this video, so glad somebody feels the same way about these as me because ive forced all my friends to watch them.
listening to this whilst working on my own 3rd year student film -- thank you so much for highlighting the world of student animation - It's a struggle working under such tight deadlines and restriction - constantly having the idea of "making it into film festivals" pushed as the only way we can succeed outside of grades,, its rough but hearing people outside of school talk about these films and enjoying them and understanding them -- just finding them posted online and loving them nonetheless,, that really does help motivate me to keep working
It makes me so incredibly happy to see shortfilms like these get recognition. They're exactly why I'm attending art school in the first place and working to be an animator. Last Summer is another amazing animated thesis film that I come back to all the time. Under This Luminous Sky is one that makes me so incredibly happy because it's like you can feel the love for the art running under the entire thing. It takes a lot of skill to pack so much world building and flavor into such a short story and so incredibly impressive of the students who worked on the writing.
I am currently working on an animated short film for my portfolio! This video was so helpful! It has given me so many different ideas on how to improve the current animation! Thank you for making this fantastic video!!
I love this video, going to a school where there's a lot of animation work but not knowing that much about it, this has helped me in my journey to learn more about what makes engaging animation. Thank you!! Subbed :D
That’s what I love about these short films. They’re so creative and personal in their own way that makes me want to keep trying to draw and animate. Keep at your journey, and I hope school helps you with creating things you love.
Honestly this is what I need.If there is another vid like that.Perhaps would u consider GOLDEN HOUR,LOUISE and the train ride home ? This vid is amazing,tám for making this type of content
Finally someone talks about how gorgeous thesis films are, I love watching short animated films- I made a whole playlist on YT for ones I liked and look through them sometimes, I admire how much creative freedom the people behind it had 😭💞
im so glad more people see the beauty of thesis films, im studying animation myself and unfortunately my college doesnt see how important and beautiful a thesis films can be, instead we do written thesis focused on a specific topic and solutions, not art, i wish to make something similar but i know my school wont let me, still watching these thesis films is a comfort like no other
i've thought of sundown so frequently since seeing it when it was first released years ago. Genuinely has inspired me so much as an artist with the storytelling, designs and wonderful colour choices. Hands down my favourtie student work. Thank you for giving attention to these wonderful animated shorts! i've watched the majority of them and it's so nice to see others in the comments appreciate them too. absolutely love Gobelin's thesis films that come out every year ^^
Im so happy this appeared on my recommended ive been watching these short films for like 2 years now and its such a joy to see all these amazing stories and this video commentating on them!!
Watched this with the "weird viewing experience" and I gotta say, it's great! I love watching movie reviews/essays, but I never tend to watch the actual film. The way you structured this was amazing! It might just be me, but the slower editing style with heartfelt commentary helped so there wasn't any whiplash between the short film and your analysis. I also love your selection. I was aware of a couple of the short films, but most of them were new for me! Keep up the great work
Glad to hear it! I think I’ll make this a regular thing and post more every so often. I’ll be sure to shoutout the creators a bit better, but I’m happy the format isn’t too disjointed.
I also watched this with the weird viewing experience and I have to agree with you. I thought it would be too much whiplash going from the short film to the video and back and forth but because the short films are well... short, it makes me feel like i never spent too long away from the video. For the second half i also tried watching all the rest of the short films in a row and then watching the rest of the video all in one and i have to say, i actually preferred going back and forth between short film and video! It meant that my brain didn't need to retain all the thoughts and feelings that i had about each short film when watching the video and instead could simply watch the video after freshly having those thoughts. TLDR: I agree and I also prefer it to watching all the short films together and then the video afterwards.
Oh those two on the thumbnails were my absolute fave! I've been following Emily Xu for a while now and Fueled just introduced me to the incredible world of loved thesis works!
Thesis films are what got me into animation, so I totally loved this video. I'm pretty happy to say that by the end of this semester, I should be done with my first animated short film for animation school :) Maybe ill post it on TH-cam depending on how finished it is... thank you for this video, I really love the support and I can't wait to see more of these videos if you choose to make more.
I just started watching this kind of things since I came across Gobelins. I even wanted to do something myself but I accepted I'm not done for that haha but I still love consuming animation. Luminous sky still one of my favorite ones of all. The music, the pacing, the character design, the untold things. I'm happy to tell I saw almost all of the ones you put in this video ✨
I love how these pieces were just homework. I really can't wait to make one myself once I fully master animations. I have seen the majority of these shorts, I love how there are so many people out there that love animation just as much as me. I love how many people still respect 2D animation. My favorite animations come from the channel GOBLIEN which show thesis films every year. My favorites are: QUAND J'AI REMPLACÉ CAMILLE, LAYLA, LAST SUMMER, LOUISE, Thermostat 6, In between, The Tree, Blind eye, and so so so much more!
I remember when I was in middle school I spent time making a decorated slideshows with 4ish thesis films and showed them to my homeroom, but I don't think they did cared that much, but if anyone did I am glad I could show the beauty in hand crafted animations.
I remember that (for some reason) I watched Fueled as a kid and was like, “man, this is sad… I really don’t know what’s happening.” Now I’m watching it again and holy cow, this is just depressing.
i really like this video even considering that I have already seen half of these masterpieces it's so nice to know what other people think about these works WANNA MORE
YESSSSSS!!!!! SUNDOWN IS MY ABSOLUTE FAVORITE SHORT FILM EVER!!!!!and Fuelled is amazingggg!!!!!! Im so so glad you made this!!! I'd LOVE to see more! Heck, we NEED more! This is an excellent and reaffirming rebuttal against the unethical onslaught of AI theft regurgitation WHICH IS WHY YOU MUST MAKE MORE PLEASEEEE!!!!🎉🎉🎉🎉 I absolutely loved hearing everything you had to say and im now motivated to check out the other short films, especially the vampire one and Under This Luminous Sky!! Ohh and Best Friend is phenomenal!!! I'm not an official art student and don't have a thesis film technically speaking, but I have been self teaching myself cinema, visual storytelling and 2d animation for the past 3 years.I have a script and four hundred pages of storyboards!!! And im doing weekly animation exercises! Seeing stuff like this, the passion of humanity and 2d animation specifically, makes me hopeful my short film will show my enthusiasm through every second!! 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
It makes me so happy to see all these films being and know most of them! Watching these projects always makes me nervous cuz sometimes theyre basically roulettes. Will they be wholesome or will it hurt? LOL But nonetheless, I found some amazing people through these. Its amazing.
If there’s an animated short film I recommend watching, it’s definitely Lullaby for Lina. It focuses on a rabbit named Lina who wants to escape her dream, but has to confront her nightmare. It’s a beautiful, surreal, and fantastical film with an amazing soundtrack, smooth animation, and a mysterious story that makes you wonder what had happened to Lina
Theres a man in the woods (i think thats the title) is a nice one. The monologue in it is suspenseful and very well written, check it out or maybe you already have.
I’ve got a project for image creation class due that takes the form of an Animation thesis between 15s and 1m. The teacher didn’t require you to draw moving pictures (aka the basics of animation), but I went overboard.
Wait… LEGEND OF PIPI WAS A THESIS FILM?! Nono I’m with you man I had no flipping clue, my brother showed me this because he found it funny I had no idea it was a thesis film
i’ve watched under this luminous sky several times. it deserves so much more recognition. if i had the funding, i’d make it a whole series. but one of my favorite parts is that it starts in the middle of the story, and the beginning and end are completely up to the viewer’s imagination. one can infer some things, invent others, and speculate many.
Man it had me on edge with the wand and it's so sweet kinda ab0ut defying oppression and the colors of the show so yummy the build yummmyyyyy
This is why I l watch Gobelins annually, their students always make amazing short films
I love the gobelins short films they are always amazing
finally, ive found my people! i have been obsessed with these short films and their immaculate artistry for years now, but i can't seem to get my friends who are less animation-inclined to get into it
i love every single one of these films to bits, and its lovely to hear someone ramble the same thoughts that have been turning in my mind
For real! I always see them pop up but no one else I know talks about them.
really nice to listen to this perspective. as someone who's still fixing up my film for its festival run even after getting sorely burned out on it, this video was really motivating. thank you.
Hell yeah! If you ever post it somewhere and remember this comment, feel free to let me know! I’d love to give it a watch.

I'm a high schooler who wants to be an animator and I'm genuinely scared for the industry .
don't be, humans will create till the end of time

Thank you for giving attention to these wonderful animated shorts! i've watched the majority of them and it's so nice to see others in the comments appreciate them too. absolutely love Gobelin's thesis films that come out every year ^^
Great video! My favourite animation was "Fuelled" personally. 10/10 in my opinion!
thanks for talking about thesis films!!! there’s so many that are so good and need to have more attention.
This video makes me so happy and I’d love to see more.
oh my god, i was so obsessed with under this luminous sky when it was released! every frame is truly artful
Those short film is so underrated..
It is always a treat to see short films. I love the creativity that inspires such works of art.
Emily xu/amiao is my favorite artist! I regularly return to her art and thesis film because she's so inspiring.
Thesis films are what got me into animation, so I totally loved this video. I'm pretty happy to say that by the end of this semester, I should be done with my first animated short film for animation school :) Maybe ill post it on TH-cam depending on how finished it is... thank you for this video, I really love the support and I can't wait to see more of these videos if you choose to make more.
the fact that i watched all of these already. I'm just happy they're gaining recogniztion they deserve
bout to show this to all my peers at sheridan lol
thanks for this vid man! love to see perspectives on student work haha
I did the cool viewing thing and omg what an emotional roller coaster that was amazing
I remember when I was in middle school I spent time making a decorated slideshows with 4ish thesis films and showed them to my homeroom, but I don't think they did cared that much, but if anyone did I am glad I could show the beauty in hand crafted animations.
I remember that (for some reason) I watched Fueled as a kid and was like, “man, this is sad… I really don’t know what’s happening.” Now I’m watching it again and holy cow, this is just depressing.
i really like this video
even considering that I have already seen half of these masterpieces
it's so nice to know what other people think about these works
WANNA MORE
YESSSSSS!!!!!
Neat video😙
It was so cool you talked about all of these shorts animation(i've actually watch some of these before)
fuelled was one of the most unforgettable effing short film ive ever watched
Capsules and Sleep Mode from Shemmet are masterpieces and so cool
It makes me so happy to see all these films being and know most of them! Watching these projects always makes me nervous cuz sometimes theyre basically roulettes. Will they be wholesome or will it hurt? LOL But nonetheless, I found some amazing people through these. Its amazing.
If there’s an animated short film I recommend watching, it’s definitely Lullaby for Lina. It focuses on a rabbit named Lina who wants to escape her dream, but has to confront her nightmare. It’s a beautiful, surreal, and fantastical film with an amazing soundtrack, smooth animation, and a mysterious story that makes you wonder what had happened to Lina
under this luminous sky is one of my favourite videos on youtube
fuelled got me cryng for some reason
Ive watched all these animations when i was a kid. But the cat animated story made me ALMOST cried arl
Still waiting for the guys behind fuelled to come back with another banger.
The first and last are made by the same artist :)) Emily miao or Emily xu with different people
I can’t believe ur channel is so small this video was amazing I only wish it was longer
"yo guys let's make a masterpiece for our homework"
Ooooh thanks for sharing these!
Theres a man in the woods (i think thats the title) is a nice one. The monologue in it is suspenseful and very well written, check it out or maybe you already have.
If you want a good animated short film, I recommend: LAST SUMMER
This was so beautiful. I kept watching it time and time again.
Oh I love that short film, it's not only relatable to me but to others who have problems dealing with separating and going to different schools/paths
So cool!
I’ve got a project for image creation class due that takes the form of an Animation thesis between 15s and 1m. The teacher didn’t require you to draw moving pictures (aka the basics of animation), but I went overboard.
3:51 howls moving castle and probably some other studio ghibli stuff I haven't seen yet stuff rn
I want to agree with this more but i don’t know how because i already agree with it 100%
Fueled traumatized me for a month three years ago
Watler is honestly giving studio Ghibli vibes
ive rewatched LOUISE from Gobelins like 50 times
All of these are great, i can def relate to HORNY
I will always love the legend of pipi
Wait… LEGEND OF PIPI WAS A THESIS FILM?! Nono I’m with you man I had no flipping clue, my brother showed me this because he found it funny I had no idea it was a thesis film
these students in film school could literally make boruto a masterpiece
i wish you included diamond jack
my english teacher made us watch the luminous sky😂
Its either, Impress yourself, or impress everyone, thats the rule
“these were homework assignments” WHAT.
PSA: The creator of Under this Luminous Sky has a webtoon called Catechism, great story and a true work of art. Check it out.
