Interesting view here. Most data does suggest Premieres hurt video performance, but you tested it on what was potentially the best gaming video made in years - this is a good proof of what Premieres are capable of

All they have to do to fix the view count issue is figure out how to handle notifications and recommendations better. It's a difficult problem, but I doubt it's unsolvable.

I honestly LOVED the premiere. It was a unique and fun experience and the video was a perfect choice for a premiere. After the premiere I watched the video again and it almost felt lonely, but I was able to see a few things I missed from being distracted by chat. I definitely would be fine with more premieres. I don't see them as delaying a video, but more as double the excitement - first you hear about it and get hyped up for the video and then it gets released meaning you get maximum anticipation for the video instead of just watching it and forgetting about it afterwards. Great video!

The thing I dislike most about TH-cam premieres is how they appear on your feed. It just feels wrong to look through the feed for a video to watch and then see an icon that's basically telling you to come back later for a video. Maybe they could put premieres on a small row above subscriptions based on when they air (obviously letting you hide it if you want). If you could disable notifications of premieres from specific people it'd be nice too.
Most of the people I see complaining seem to be just angry about something being new. How dare you innovate!

It was a very well crafted video, it kept my attention and was very entertaining throughout. This'll definitely make me look out for your next premiere.

  • @ViltsuV
    @ViltsuV 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

Cool. Thanks for the breakdown. I personally don't like premieres because I come to TH-cam to watch videos on demand. That is, after all, what TH-cam's built on. Sure I might click on a video that's premiering when I load my subscriptions page, but I really don't care enough about most of my subscriptions to schedule my day around TH-cam premieres. Sad to say, you belonged in that category despite me being informed about your premiere. But thanks again for sharing the experience. The fact that TH-cam live chat boosts your comments statistic is fascinating and probably helps boost its recommendation rate.

Not sure if you'd remember, but you included me in "How will he die? Episode 29". My TH-cam name at the time was "GoldenHawk". The video was pinned to the top of my subscribed feed, which was a tad annoying, yet I didnt get any notification when it actually was about to begin. I was prepared by you that it's going to be an experiment, so I didnt think much of it really. Though I didnt catch it live, I was very happy to see you be in pre chat a day before the premier, and just chatting. You're not the type who we can just catch on discord or twitter replies, and talk about stuff. It felt nice. If youre going to do this premier thing again, dont set it to more than like half an hour. It's not like the video would come out any sooner or later, you just get to know it's coming. Which is a good thing because there's a lot of youtubers where I actually would like to know more in advance what video is coming out and when so I can have lunch or something alongside it.

The reason I skipped the premiere initially, and only watched the video a few days later since I had forgotten about it, is that when watching the premiere, you can't watch it by yourself. The system doesn't really work as just a schedule for a release because of the live aspects, such as pushing the same video to everyone watching at the same time making it so that the video may buffer a lot more than normal, and having the chat slow down your browser since it seems to still be loaded even if you hide it, and you can't skip past the live point. I think they should let people watch the video on the normal page during a premiere in addition to the live experience, which I think should be separate.

Im not a fan of having my notifications clogged up from multiple people over the course of multiple days letting me know a video is coming. I care about a handful of content creators, you included, on youtube. I generally make the rounds to check your channels in case I've missed anything throughout the week, but my use of youtube is to usually scroll down the sub box and select the videos im interested in to watch in bulk. I'm glad ypu enjoyed it, and i might be interested if there was a SEPARATE premier tab that i could flip to to see what's coming. But as it stands, scrolling past announcements of an upcoming video i have no interest in watching live from multiple channels multiple times when im trying to find content to watch now, is frustrating.
I'm glad it was a positive experience for you, but until its properly separated from regular videos and something i can look at on its own, because its a completely different way of looking at youtube than how i do now, its only going to be more annoying than a desired feature.

I'm happy your youtube premier was succesful. I've only seen massive negativity about it as well and personally haven't cared much either way, but I see it as a nice new feature. Sadly the announcements appear on mobile much later than the actual release, and I'm not one for keeping a close watch on some video upload schedule.
Also I don't think feeling disappointed about the viewcount during premier is correct, how many views do videos usually get in those 15 minutes? Just because it's live doesn't mean it should get a ton more imo. Agree with your view in this video completely. (btw that skyrim video was awesome)

Anyone trying to work out what they think about it better do so quickly. That’s the nature of the thing. It was already caught up with trends that seemed too fast to track when it began to become self-aware, decades ago. It has picked up a lot of speed since then.
It is old enough to have arrived in waves, which is to say insistently, or recurrently, and each time the challenge is more urgent. Among its predictions is the expectation that you’ll be too slow to deal with it coherently. Yet if you fumble the question it poses - because rushed - you lose, and perhaps quite badly.

I want to thank you for opening my eyes. I have never watched premiere and I always thought that it just delays the video. Now I feel like it is something I need to try. It could definitely prove to be interesting and entertaining

Color me surprised, the people liked it. I didn't see the premiere, but I did watch later (at 1.5x). Good video, sir.

Just wanted to say that I used to watch you for your CS videos and I'm not subbed to 2kliksphilip, yet I watched Man vs Skyrim since it was in my recommended videos for 2 damn days! It was a great video and I'm glad I saw it but you're probably right that youtube boosts premieres' popularity by counting chat messages as comments.

Watched live, but really didn't chat. My issue was the buffering. I know it is not your fault, but for me every minute or so needed 15 seconds of buffering. Killing the flow, but I must say The entire experience was great. I am not an active community member or anything, just subscribed, Redditt subbed, and make a few YT comments. So when it came to live chat I loved it. I did not really speak, but knowing there were thousands seeing as I am was weird in a good way. wouldn't mind another I had the stream open all 36 hours because I don't turn my desktop off anyways and I figured, why open this tab a second time.

with videos from people i watch regularly, premieres are fine. they're fun, engaging, and i don't mind the wait.
with videos i want to watch NOW (news, tutorials, etc.) premieres are the death of all things holy.

I think it's a great feature and I really enjoyed the Premiere. For both the viewers and the one making the video. You get to see what your viewers thing while watching the video. and the audience gets to watch the video together. Sure the execution of the feature can be improved in different ways as you pointed out, but I'd still rather have the feature in its current state then not have it at all.
Also pretty good pronunciation on the word Schadenfreude. I wasn't aware that word got exported from German into other languages.

I love whenever kliksphilip says something wrong on purpose, like hell of a lot, or premiere.

I don't understand the hate, either. My only guess is how people are annoyed at how it shows up on the top of their subscription list, but even that is just an incredibly minor inconvenience. Now that TH-cam does live streaming, these streams do the same thing showing up on the top of your subscriptions. It's not worth spamming dislikes, I mean come on people.
Really though, TH-cam should disallow voting and comment-commenting (not chat commenting) before the video starts, or arguably before it finishes.
I wasn't there to watch it live, but it was a great video. And I'm really glad you had these two videos talking about Premier from a creator's point of view. From your perspective, it makes total sense that you would want to engage with the watching community and get that instant feedback to your videos. That gives hindsight as to why TH-camrs might want to do this despite the (perceived) prejudices against the system. It's just that most viewers don't seem to understand that, and see it as their inconvenience to put up with. Again, I don't know why people dislike it so much, it's not like they're pushing Google+ on us again.

I don't actually care about watching with others. I don't care about the chat, as it distracts me from the content. If I find myself reading the chat, means that the content on screen is not good for me have my full attention. In a youtube video, there are no downtimes where you can read the chat and see what people are saying, which is unlike twitch streams and/or live sporting/esporting events. I also like watching videos at my own time, that is why I never(seldom) use notifications bell.
I guess the benefit of the premiere videos are only creator sided. They can see the chat and get live reactions from the audience. From my, the audiences view, I don't see it as adding anything, but it is also not taking anything away, so I'm fine.

      @Garbaz 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

You are really onto something with the "no downtime for the chat" part!
Maybe the "how do you feel" buttons, Philip suggested would be a better option. It would allow you to express your reaction live, without taking away from the viewing experience.

you can go fullscreen to hide the chat. that way there is no time spent reading and more time spent watching.
if you watch on your own time then what does it matter? the video will be long over when its your own time or wont be up anyway.
if for some reason you start while the premier is happening, go watch something with a bit of length and come back later to see the whole thing.
the benefits are most certainly not just to one side, the creators get to see what people like and can then improve content using something other than polls. and for the viewer? for those that are not antisocial, you get to talk about something well-made and properly edited with thousands of people while it happens.
its like twitch but instead of talking to the creator, you talk to the viewers.
i think it is an amazing idea, minus notifications being poorly made.

This video being a premiere that I missed by 14 minutes is strange to me, I wasn't notified of it at all and just stumbled upon it afterwards. I'm not sure if I like the idea of watching videos with extra people on the side, I'd probably just hide chat but I'm glad you had a good time with it! :)

I think the reason why so many people disliked is because you get a notification on your mobile phone by default if you didnt turn it off
