The thing about Oberyn, which no one seems to get (neither did I for a long time) is explicitly said in this scene. He wants to bring all who wronged him to justice. That includes Tywin: he wants to unmask him, he wants people to know he ordered the assassination of his sister and his nephews... and the only person who can incriminate him is the very person he ordered to do the dirty deeds... Gregor himself, and he is dying. His "gloating" isn't really gloating. It's the despair of knowing he's losing his maybe only chance to incriminate Tywin over any shadow of doubt. Had he won the fight and killed Gregor, he would never be able to make his accusation seem true to people again.
I think this is probably one of the best scenes out of the whole Game of Thrones series. What an acting masterclass from both, you just feel Oberyn's anger feeding this scene & Tyrion just dripping with sarcasm in his despair.... then Oberyn picks up the torch & says "I will be your Champion" gives me goosebumps as you just feel the mood swing to hope ! They've both got their chance. just brilliant

Tbf oberyn went out thinking the mountain was a dead man from the poison. He hedged his bets and knew right after the first stab he had killed him no matter wat

It's just a sad moment for Tyrion when Oberyn tells the story when he saw Tyrion as a baby. Tyrion said "she wanted this for a long time." It implies that he thought there was a time when Cersei actually cared for him, even if he didn't remember it. Oberyn confirms that Cersei hated him from the moment he was born. That he was always hated, by just existing even as an innocent baby. And that's what breaks hi.

All the sudden a man who holds grudge against Tyrion's family showed up and told Tyrion he is not a monster and was mistreated since he was born; at that moment Tyrion knew he was talking to a person, probably the only one in the world, who believes his innocence ~~ "That is not a monster, that is just a baby!" I feel the despair when Tyrion said "If you want justice you've come to the wrong place", however Oberyn simply replied "I disagree". That "I disagree" makes me suddenly realize despite being a prince and pretending to be a playboy, Oberyn was in fact desperate and lived in pain; nobody cared what he wants and he had been through hell looking for justice and eventually found it in a dark dungeon.
I disagree on the meaning of "I disagree" :D I think it highlights the character of Oberyn as he was being built up to that Point - he is the ace, and he is by far the most progressive character (his discussion with Cersei about bastards solidifies it). His "I disagree" is a logical response from him - he wants justice, not only for himself, but even for the man who is a member of a family he hates, and it highlights the point of "you can't just complain about injustice - you must personally fight against it, and I want to lead by example". It's a great message to end such a great character on. Of course, just my interpretation of it, I could be wrong.
Jaimie would have fought the Mountain if he had his Right Hand. He didn’t abandon Tyrion. He even released Tyrion after Oberyn failed. Can’t blame Jaimie for not fighting a battle he couldn’t win.
I agree about almost everything, but Jaime would have gladly fought for Tyrion if it wasn't for his missing right hand. Hell, book Jaime even took Varys to the end of his sword to have him free Tyrion before his execution.

The fact that Cersei did this to Tyrion when she was so young just proves that she wasn’t evil because she was neglected or abused throughout her life. Like many characters in the show, she was born evil. It’s heartbreaking when you can see in Tyrion’s face how devastated he is to find out that his own sister actually hates him with all her being. He always thought that there was some love between them and that Cersei would only put up a facade, but listening to Oberyn’s story debunks all of this and he realizes how big his sister’s hatred towards him really is. To the point where she would actually hurt a baby and wish death on him since he was born.
Yet you missed the most obvious and important details . Her hatred for tyrion was gained from tywin , hearing everything bad about the newborn monster and how he killed his mother. Although that should have stopped after she matured, much like her brother

This was actually the very first scene that Pedro Pascal filmed as Obryn Martel. This demonstrates how COMPLETELY locked-in Pedro was with the character from the very beginning.
I think one of my favourite changes from the book was placing this scene after the trial. By having it take place beforehand in the books, you already have this knowledge throughout the whole trial that, if it were to come to it, Oberyn would fight for Tyrion. By having Tyrion demand a trial by combat without a champion, it adds more to Tyrions rising madness and shows that he has pretty much accepted his death, but with his last act will spite his father and his sister. It also makes this scene so much more hopeful and exciting, as Tyrion is at his lowest point and abandoned by pretty much everyone, he is fully hopeless before Oberyn LITERALLY arrives with a spark of light/hope. I remember watching this scene and getting so pumped for the battle (it made me briefly forget I know how it will end 😖)
Yes!! You're one of the only people I've ever seen point out this change, and I completely agree. One of the rare cases in the early season of the writers making GRRM's material more poignant.
I like it both ways (pause) because in the books, it shows a bit more strategy on Tyrion and Oberyn's part, sort of like they are coming up with a plot. Whereas the change here is more fitting for TV because it's more of a dramatic twist right when Tyrion loses all hope and goes over the edge. But both versions are good.
A man who hates your entire family line to the point of wishing that the gods will strike them all down....... decides to fight for you....... due to his remembering the out right evilness done to you since birth by said family. the bit of a thought that he sees you as a victim of their evil as much as himself.
Best part of this scene is Oberyn basically tells Tyrion that he’s the only Lannister that he respects and likes and has empathy for how badly Tyrion is treated by his family and society for his dwarfism. Oberyn wasn’t just a brave and deadly warrior. He was a man with empathy and kindness. Oberyn shows why Dorne is the most progressive of the 7 kingdoms when it comes to equality for citizens. In Dorne they don’t just not believe in bastards they also don’t care if a man or woman in the Martell family becomes the leader of Dorne.
Best season no question for me. The climax of so many things. I like seasons 5 and 6 but even if they tried their best they couldn't have recreated the glory this season was.
Season 5 onwards was a massive disappointment. Seasons 1-4 was such strong television and it turned to complete crap. I have never been so disappointed by anything in my life.
…and then he died screaming with no teeth, taunted and utterly reduced. Oberyn was the most hideous story I’ve ever had the misfortune of experiencing. The sheer cruelty was blasphemous.
At least he got revenge. The manticore poison made Gregor suffer a lot for DAYS. He screamed so much that people could hear him from the red keep. And when he got "cured" he turned into a zombie. That's worse than what he did to Oberyn.
You know Dinklage himself felt the relief and gratitude Tyrion felt, the sudden shot of legitimate hope in the face of absolute emptiness. That breath he takes, the tear that comes to his eye. Pete knocks it out of the park.
Even though Oberyn lost, he achieved his goal. Justice. The mountain suffered for weeks until he was turned into a zombie, forced to obey every command. No one knows how much of Gregor Clegane was left in him, but it was certainly a fate worse than the quick death that befell Oberyn. Moreover, his battle and defeat led to Tywin's death. Shot by his own son while shitting in the john. I bet if Oberyn had the choice of giving his life to get justice for his sister and her children, he wouldn't have hesitated for a second.
Fuck, man... I know Oberyn was more trying to avenge his family than save Tyrion. But in that moment, when he said "I will be your champion" he looked like an angel of hope.
1:28-1:32 That 4 second shot.. so underrappreciated. Look at Pedro's face.. the subtle change.. that's the moment he truly decided to be his champion imo. Pedro from his slightest of smirks when Tyrion is saying "she didn't need to bother you, I'm already dead"... to that smirk going to a cold stare as soon as Tyrion says, "the joy she will feel when my head leaves my neck" Pedro turns disgusted at the thought of joy in Cersei..
Im glad Pedro Pascal is getting all his present acting opportunities. He made Oberyn such an excellent/memorable character with the limited amount of time he had in Game of Trhones. He absolutely knocked it out of the park with this performance and this monologue - one of the best scenes in Game of Thrones.
How a tv series of an imaginary world can cause such feelings in the viewer. "That's not a monster, that's just a baby" sums up poor Tyrion's life and it is like an ice knife in the heart.
All TV and film is imaginary. Even those based on real events are dramatized. Human beings are drawn to story - and good story is good story regardless of setting.
My favourite scene in the entire show and, frankly, one of the best things I've ever seen on TV. It doesn't feel like acting, it's as if Pedro is really remembering a childhood memory and Peter's reaction is everything. At its peak, GoT was amazing stuff

This speech changes the earlier seasons for me, the rumors outside Casterly Rock probably only made Tywin more furious, Cersei wanting Tyrion dead and Jaime protecting him all his life.

The only time I truly considered quitting the show was when Oberyn was killed in what might be the most gruesome death in GoT. That moment was so devastating because this scene set such a dramatic tone to the fight. Oberyn telling Tyrion that they both deserved justice for the wrongs they suffered brings tears to my eyes. The final line of “I will be your champion” is thrilling - Tyrion’s face when he realizes that a strong and capable warrior, fueled by righteous fury, is going to step up to defend his life, is so powerfully uplifting. Everyone in the world had turned their backs on him (or so he thought), but here was this great protector, fighting for the two of them to get what they deserve out of this wicked, brutal world. What then followed was the most exciting 1 on 1 fight in the show, and of course one of the most horrifying and heartbreaking deaths. RIP to Oberyn - at the least we can say that he got his confession in the end.
To plot against your enemy for revenge is counterproductive as you are wasting effort on solely screwing over another when you could be strengthening who you are and pursuing pleasure. But if the opportunity arises and you have carefully weighed the consequences, do not hesitate to seize that opportunity
The inability to get revenge. I think that hurts more than being rejected for who you are or mockery. The incapability of revenge is perhaps the most painful of all the emotions I have experienced in this journey and that's including psychosis.
This is one of the best scenes in TV. You have these two disparate characters, coming from different places, with the same end game in mind. And the way it was acted out was so visceral.

Peter is a great actor, I'll give him that, but unless I'm swayed by the presumption of what I don't know...when he said "...that's just a baby." I can swear I see Peter no longer acting. I think he's tapping in to whatever he's endured as a little dude all his life. There were many moments the writers gave him this satisfaction, as if he could speak for all of them, but it's just something about this sort of validation, this acknowledgement of his humanity (and his remarkable reaction to it), that tells me he wasn't just acting. It actually touched him. That, or he did such a good job acting, it fooled me.
I remember this... I was soooo pissed about what happened to Ned, so pissed about how Joffrey had tortured Sansa, so pissed about how Tyrion was forced to abandon his love to marry Sansa by his father... so much of the show had just felt like tragedy... like pain, like evil coming out on top... then Oberyn walks in. Oberon was a player but a man of justice, a man who didn't sit by while injustice occurred, who loved his family and was going to obliterate everyone who had enacted this evil and terror... then he died. I was so pissed at this point in the show... I wanted so desperately for Oberyn to destroy all those who HAD IT COMING... my heart man, my heart.
This is why Oberyn is my favorite character. He never hides his bisexuality whatsoever, he embraces who he is, and he has compassion. He couldve simply fought Gregor for his own selfish revenge, but instead gives Tyrion this peace and stregth in knowing he had a true champion fighting for him.

His "I disagree" is a logical response from him - he wants justice, not only for himself, but even for the man who is a member of a family he hates, and it highlights the point of "you can't just complain about injustice - you must personally fight against it, and I want to lead by example". It's a great message to end such a great character on.

Jaimie would have fought the Mountain if he had his Right Hand. He didn’t abandon Tyrion. He even released Tyrion after Oberyn failed.

I agree about almost everything, but Jaime would have gladly fought for Tyrion if it wasn't for his missing right hand. Hell, book Jaime even took Varys to the end of his sword to have him free Tyrion before his execution.
He tried to hide his pain behind, cockiness, laughter and passive aggressive comments, but he very much was devastated by his sister's cruel death. You see the pain in his eyes every time he talks about her
3:17 the way Pedro ever so slightly draws out the word “baby” and at the same time looks into Tyrion’s eyes… incredible acting, and a great example of what an actor can bring. Four simple words on the page became a deep, beautiful moment of human empathy.

The fact that Cersei did this to Tyrion when she was so young just proves that she wasn’t evil because she was neglected or abused throughout her life. Like many characters in the show, she was born evil. It’s heartbreaking when you can see in Tyrion’s face how devastated he is to find out that his own sister actually hates him with all her being. He always thought that there was some love between them and that Cersei would only put up a facade, but listening to Oberyn’s story debunks all of this and he realizes how big his sister’s hatred towards him really is. To the point where she would actually hurt a baby and wish death on him since he was born.
Yet you missed the most obvious and important details .
Her hatred for tyrion was gained from tywin , hearing everything bad about the newborn monster and how he killed his mother.

Not a Game Of Thrones fan at all, but that was one of the best scenes I've ever had the pleasure of watching in my life... television or film. The performance from both actors was just incredible, and the relief and hope on Tyrion's face at 4:56 put an enormous lump in my throat. I understand now why true fans of the show were so devastated with how it ended, and I am so sorry

This was actually the very first scene that Pedro Pascal filmed as Obryn Martel. This demonstrates how COMPLETELY locked-in Pedro was with the character from the very beginning.
I think one of my favourite changes from the book was placing this scene after the trial. By having it take place beforehand in the books, you already have this knowledge throughout the whole trial that, if it were to come to it, Oberyn would fight for Tyrion. By having Tyrion demand a trial by combat without a champion, it adds more to Tyrions rising madness and shows that he has pretty much accepted his death, but with his last act will spite his father and his sister. It also makes this scene so much more hopeful and exciting, as Tyrion is at his lowest point and abandoned by pretty much everyone, he is fully hopeless before Oberyn LITERALLY arrives with a spark of light/hope. I remember watching this scene and getting so pumped for the battle (it made me briefly forget I know how it will end 😖)
Yes!! You're one of the only people I've ever seen point out this change, and I completely agree. One of the rare cases in the early season of the writers making GRRM's material more poignant.

I like it both ways (pause) because in the books, it shows a bit more strategy on Tyrion and Oberyn's part, sort of like they are coming up with a plot. Whereas the change here is more fitting for TV because it's more of a dramatic twist right when Tyrion loses all hope and goes over the edge. But both versions are good.

A man who hates your entire family line to the point of wishing that the gods will strike them all down....... decides to fight for you....... due to his remembering the out right evilness done to you since birth by said family. the bit of a thought that he sees you as a victim of their evil as much as himself.

Best part of this scene is Oberyn basically tells Tyrion that he’s the only Lannister that he respects and likes and has empathy for how badly Tyrion is treated by his family and society for his dwarfism. Oberyn wasn’t just a brave and deadly warrior. He was a man with empathy and kindness. Oberyn shows why Dorne is the most progressive of the 7 kingdoms when it comes to equality for citizens. In Dorne they don’t just not believe in bastards they also don’t care if a man or woman in the Martell family becomes the leader of Dorne.
Funny how one of the few people to show Tyrion genuine kindness and empathy was a man with very good cause to despise his family.
The fact this was Pedro's first scene as Oberyn just adds legend to his acting ability.

Best season no question for me. The climax of so many things. I like seasons 5 and 6 but even if they tried their best they couldn't have recreated the glory this season was.

At least he got revenge. The manticore poison made Gregor suffer a lot for DAYS. He screamed so much that people could hear him from the red keep. And when he got "cured" he turned into a zombie. That's worse than what he did to Oberyn.

This was one of the most dramatic and best acting scenes in TV history as far as I'm concerned.
You know Dinklage himself felt the relief and gratitude Tyrion felt, the sudden shot of legitimate hope in the face of absolute emptiness. That breath he takes, the tear that comes to his eye. Pete knocks it out of the park.

The mountain suffered for weeks until he was turned into a zombie, forced to obey every command. No one knows how much of Gregor Clegane was left in him, but it was certainly a fate worse than the quick death that befell Oberyn.
Moreover, his battle and defeat led to Tywin's death. Shot by his own son while shitting in the john.
I bet if Oberyn had the choice of giving his life to get justice for his sister and her children, he wouldn't have hesitated for a second.

Im glad Pedro Pascal is getting all his present acting opportunities. He made Oberyn such an excellent/memorable character with the limited amount of time he had in Game of Trhones. He absolutely knocked it out of the park with this performance and this monologue - one of the best scenes in Game of Thrones.

How a tv series of an imaginary world can cause such feelings in the viewer. "That's not a monster, that's just a baby" sums up poor Tyrion's life and it is like an ice knife in the heart.
All TV and film is imaginary. Even those based on real events are dramatized. Human beings are drawn to story - and good story is good story regardless of setting.

Prince Oberyn Martell - THE most interesting man in all of Westeros
The only time I truly considered quitting the show was when Oberyn was killed in what might be the most gruesome death in GoT. That moment was so devastating because this scene set such a dramatic tone to the fight. Oberyn telling Tyrion that they both deserved justice for the wrongs they suffered brings tears to my eyes. The final line of “I will be your champion” is thrilling - Tyrion’s face when he realizes that a strong and capable warrior, fueled by righteous fury, is going to step up to defend his life, is so powerfully uplifting. Everyone in the world had turned their backs on him (or so he thought), but here was this great protector, fighting for the two of them to get what they deserve out of this wicked, brutal world. What then followed was the most exciting 1 on 1 fight in the show, and of course one of the most horrifying and heartbreaking deaths. RIP to Oberyn - at the least we can say that he got his confession in the end.
To plot against your enemy for revenge is counterproductive as you are wasting effort on solely screwing over another when you could be strengthening who you are and pursuing pleasure. But if the opportunity arises and you have carefully weighed the consequences, do not hesitate to seize that opportunity
The inability to get revenge. I think that hurts more than being rejected for who you are or mockery. The incapability of revenge is perhaps the most painful of all the emotions I have experienced in this journey and that's including psychosis.

This is one of the best scenes in TV. You have these two disparate characters, coming from different places, with the same end game in mind. And the way it was acted out was so visceral.

Best scene on the show. When Tyrien was called a monster and his sister wanted him to die hit his ass hard. I truly believe he grew up with the "stereotype" of being different was true feeling. Fucking incredible scene.
Peter is a great actor, I'll give him that, but unless I'm swayed by the presumption of what I don't know...when he said "...that's just a baby." I can swear I see Peter no longer acting. I think he's tapping in to whatever he's endured as a little dude all his life. There were many moments the writers gave him this satisfaction, as if he could speak for all of them, but it's just something about this sort of validation, this acknowledgement of his humanity (and his remarkable reaction to it), that tells me he wasn't just acting. It actually touched him.
That, or he did such a good job acting, it fooled me.
Every actor in this show was the perfect pick. So many talented actors in a single show it is truly amazing.
I remember this... I was soooo pissed about what happened to Ned, so pissed about how Joffrey had tortured Sansa, so pissed about how Tyrion was forced to abandon his love to marry Sansa by his father... so much of the show had just felt like tragedy... like pain, like evil coming out on top... then Oberyn walks in. Oberon was a player but a man of justice, a man who didn't sit by while injustice occurred, who loved his family and was going to obliterate everyone who had enacted this evil and terror... then he died. I was so pissed at this point in the show... I wanted so desperately for Oberyn to destroy all those who HAD IT COMING... my heart man, my heart.
This is why Oberyn is my favorite character. He never hides his bisexuality whatsoever, he embraces who he is, and he has compassion. He couldve simply fought Gregor for his own selfish revenge, but instead gives Tyrion this peace and stregth in knowing he had a true champion fighting for him.
