DEI Vs merit: ideological fight behind ouster of Harvard’s Claudine Gay. India quota debate parallel

  • Harvard University president Claudine Gay resigned this week after a tumultuous few months that saw questions being raised about her response to pro-Palestine rallies on the campus, where antisemitic slogans were allegedly raised. The protests took place against the backdrop of Israel’s attack on Gaza, which followed a terror strike by Hamas on the Jewish state’s border communities. In episode 1378 of #CutTheClutter, Editor-in-Chief Shekhar Gupta explains why the current churn on premier US college campuses goes beyond the Gaza conflict, and why it has implications for the world beyond, including India.

As someone who has studied in the US, I know plagiarism is a very serious offense. Many indian students fall into this trap in their first year of studies as they are not familiar with the rules. I personally know people who copied a line or two from the internet without attribution, the colleges use a tool to find out if the work is original. If it’s not they put them on probation for first offense, fail them for second offense and expel them for 3rd offense. The people I know unwittingly paid a heavy price. This professor plagiarized some 60 times. It doesn’t matter if the person who originally wrote it doesn’t mind - it’s still an offense. For that alone she deserved to go - if she didn’t, then Harvard would have no leg to stand on to enforce their existing plagiarism rules on students.
Regarding DEI. this professor only had 11 publications - no books. 11 publications is generally not enough to get a tenured role as an assistant professor even in low ranked colleges. I know people who publish these many papers in just 1 or 2 years during graduate studies and still fail to get coveted jobs - that’s how strong the competition is. Given that, it’s very fair to say she didn’t get this job based on merit.
In summary: This is a consequence of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion becoming more important than Distinction, Excellence and Integrity.

If you are from the same field as Gay, I could repose more faith in your conclusions. I agree with you on most points. Having said that, I'm not sure the number of publications alone is the right metric. Because she did win Best Thesis awards for both her PhD and an undergrad degree, from Stanford and Harvard I think. The quality of her publications , if you measure by the number of citations can also be very subjective. E.g. in certain areas of Math, one breakthrough journal paper alone is enough to defend a PhD thesis, while in some applied areas people publish 20 papers each year. I don't know whether her awards are for all of PhD theses, or all of social sciences etc. or what. I don't know whether you are from the same field as Claudine Gay, and I'm not from that field either.

Claudine Gay is not a liberal. She's a Marxist leftist. They don't value truth or honesty. (They say so themselves.)They are very much "by any means necessary." That's why she thinks it's ok to steal other people's work.
You and I are on the same side of this.

A good recall. I wonder why give a seemingly clean chit to Ms Gay. I sat through the congress deposition live On TV. It is abundantly clear from the deposition that all three Presidents, did not admit that call for genocide is abhor able even though it was evident they were aware. She also said that the words become abhor able only when it turns to action. On this when Gay was asked if she will take notice only on occurrence of genocide or words to that effect, she floundered and still did not condemn the call for genocide. She was abundantly aware of what she was saying I watched it, all,of it.
Tailpiece: Now Ms Gay is just trying to redeem something out of it all, by the left - right and other such arguments. Let us not fall for it. Unfortunately we carry and profess wrong aspects of liberalism which is not good for liberalism. Just saying.

This is a very important episode of CTC, not because of what Sekhar Gupta tried to analyse/ confuse viewers on the left-right debate, but because of the links provided to so many defining articles written by both sides, material that wouldn’t be easily accessible by ordinary persons.
The Left, ever since it emerged in human civilisation, has always tried to twist facts and obfuscate understanding to mould opinion towards its wishes. This is one era when the other side is standing upto it with equal vigour and intellect, something which Sekhar too agrees. Irrespective of all that are being said about DEI blah blah, Claudine Gay has been forced to resign not because of her skin colour but because of her incredible stupidity of persisting with a non answer that could even shame those scores of Indian political spokespersons and politicians on television studio debates. Gay through her article is indulging in the age old left liberal cliches of playing the victim card! Sekhar’s attempt to equate the issue with reservations in India is a red herring. The right equation would be to draw parallels with the state of affairs in our elite academic institutions starting with JNU.

DEI is a complicated issue. Definitely cannot be discussed in a single comment, but one thing I'd say is everything in excess is bad, even the good things. DEI started as a noble idea to allow social upliftment but then it became political and politicians used it to create vote banks. While it started with race and gender, they kept adding more and more categories to DEI including sexuality and identity now (which are rather personal preferences than social status). This excess led to deeper social divisions because now you can get a DEI benefit simply by "self identifying as a DEI category person".

SG sir, again a great episode - you've consistently raised the bar for Indian audiences in how they consume news. Love and respect to you (& The Print) for that.
Just one call-out - you missed a very very critical thing in the DEI philosophy which won't be clear to the unassuming audience who hasn't gone thru in detail about this. It's the 'Oppressor - Oppressed' belief system acc to which Whites, Jews and lo and behold, some Asians (implying Hindu Indians) are oppressors - rest are oppressed. May be you can elaborate on it later if you choose to..

This is a fair comment. I have seen a lot of instances on LinkedIn of flat out racism of these so called "oppressed" against the "oppressors". That means that if you say something other then that the resignation of Claudine Gay is racism, you will be attacked and tagged with your employer so HR can see it. They hope that there is a strong DEI influence in that HR department that will silence or fire you if spoken out of line. This is important for Indians working in the US or even Europe to realize.

There should be zero tolerance to anyone who justifies speaking against any community or religion by saying ’depending on the context’. People like Claudine Gay had given true liberals a bad name. Also it seems The Print is trying to justify this - may be effect of some sponsors

Is diversity of political thought and ideology (in a political science department faculty) less important than diversity of ethnicity? It appears, in terms of diversity of political thought and ideology, Harvard has lost all diversity in certain social sciences/political sciences departments. While I'm sure disgusting racial vitriol was added to this fire, if the allegations of a misconduct or crime are proven to be true, does it matter what motivated those allegations or what the identity / ideology /politics of the accuser? Certain faculty, (at least one dean of Harvard Law) lost their job/didn't get tenure for subjective ideological issues, and not plagiarism.

I did my Master's in Engineering at University of Michigan while working at General Motors in India. One of my colleague, while writing his Statement of Purpose while applying for the same Master's program as me, copied a line from something he found online. He was not only denied admission by the University, but also fired from his job at GM. Please understand, plagiarism is a serious offence, particularly in America. I would presume he would also qualify for DEI, yet that was the action taken. So even if one person among the people Ms. Gay 'plagiarized' has complained or confirmed it was without their consent and/or without them being given due credit, Ms. Gay should have been fired from the job and not let to resign. This is demonstrably consistent with American culture.
I have become so careful about plagiarism that I review even what I post on social media. And Ms. Gay has been born, brought up and gained success in America.

Fantastic video, Shekhar(Gupta Ji- I know you don't like that 😜)! Your channel consistently delves into complex thoughts, providing an intellectual perspective that I truly appreciate. While my views sometimes differ from yours, I value hearing your opinions as they broaden my understanding and make me only wiser.
Now, onto the fight between conservatives and liberals - it's like a pendulum of time. Every decade or so, the societal context shifts, and the pendulum swings from left to right and vice versa. I don't consider the extreme left as purely liberal; in fact, the extreme left can be as conservative as the extreme right. It's about context, not labels.
This narrative war, akin to a genomic analogy, sees certain ideologies emerging when the situation is favourable. Just like dormant genomes spring to life when conditions are right, ideologies gain prominence based on societal needs. The liberal openness arises with affluence, but as impurities creep in, conservatism resurfaces, leading to a continuous cycle. When we embrace liberal ideologies and openness, there's a period where people may exploit the generosity, taking advantage of the freedom offered. Initially, these impurities might be overlooked, but over time, as resources become constrained, there's a shift towards conservatism. Individuals, recognizing the need to safeguard limited resources, start closing in, giving rise to the resurgence of conservative thought. This cyclic interplay, influenced by societal dynamics, keeps the pendulum swinging between left and right. The delicate balance between liberalism and conservatism is intricately tied to the ebb and flow of resources and societal needs.
Now, reflecting on the U.S. versus India - the war of narratives seems more refined in the U.S., with a nuanced interplay between conservative and liberal forces. In India, the pendulum swing appears more pronounced and dynamic.
Thanks for sparking these reflections! Your content always challenges my thinking. 👏 #IntellectualPerspectives #ConservativesVsLiberals 👍 #ThoughtfulReflections

20:20 22:36 a very interesting nuance about USA affirmative action is that after Affirmative Action being created specifically by President Lindon Johnson for a specific group, affirmative action immediately PRIMALLY included/benefited many many other groups. In other words, for 50 years the group that was supposed to benefit from DEI/affirmative action benefited from it the least. (Pls check all statistics and publications).
Not sure how/why that happened, but maybe it's because no one asked when they're hiring or implementing programs the applicant if their family was in USA the 1800s? ;Did their lineage suffer from government laws( or their land was stolen/property burned down) in the 1800s and previous years(1776 to 1960s) idk.🤷 Also in the US part of the culture is "LEGACY ADMISSIONS STUDENTS " 15 %to 40% of the students are from high financial donors and faculty or parent/grandparents ( LEGACY) went there, so it's more complicated than just merit vs no merit. The political right in America studied the motivations behind the enormous support of whites of the BLM movement. They discovered that it was the power of the logic and rationale of critical race theory. Since then the Right has targeted perceived representatives and proponents of the movement because it cammot challenge merit of the school of thought. If you were from here, ur exploration would begin with American racism and how it has undermined merit through, for one, its embedded and overt protection of white mediocrity. It has done so in many ways. One is by allowing headstarts and secreted enclaves for white development and then evaluating everyone by what those privileged folks deeived from that access. The product of that access is not better thought. That's demonstrated by the Right's own study that found that critical race theory was able to defeat and displace dominant though through logic and the scope of the consideration it requires.

The actual issue is not if Claudine Gay is qualified or not. I wouldn't know. Maybe she is not. But the present situation seems to me like the pro-Israel faction scapegoating someone in high position to scare people into not criticizing Israeli policy." If you go against us the US government and the Israel lobby will come after you." While both anti-Semitism and Islamophobia is on the rise as since Oct 7th, it seems rather suspicious that the House was quick to come to the condemnation of racism toward just one group, practically calling Ms. Gay a genocide sympathizer in a very aggressive and rather hypocritical questioning, considering the US government is sending the bombs in support of the ongoing "genocide" as defined by South Africa which she will argue in international court. Then dirt is dug up on her. Now the issue has shifted to her character. Setting an example to others. The message is loud and clear," Don't let pro-Palestinian protest happen on your campuses.
And of course letting a black person take the fall will garner support in a country with a history of racism towards minorities.
I'm Asian living far from all of this. Just my take on the situation.

The DEI definition is incorrect. DEI is intended to weigh true merit matkets and do so as an assessment of the totality of the candidate and not simply rubber stamp the conveyor belt of existing power arrangements. So Claudine Gay was not hired because she is black. She was allowed to compete against mostly white men despite her being black. That is, she was not excluded, as many scholars of color have been, because her scholarly product referenced race or could be classified as critical race theory. And the white candidates wouldnt be able to essentially inherit the position based on their pedigree, connections or likeness to people who have held the position. Just the opposite of a preference system, DEI allows the most thorough and accurate review of qualifications.

So, when you optimize, you have a primary goal to optimize for. When you try to optimize for two or more, then you have to potentially compromise both or all goals and end up with medicre values on every axis. The problem with DEI is you are absolutely compromising merit in some cases in favor of race, hence the ruling on affirmative action. Why should Asian descent Americans need higher SAT scores to enter a school? Are they somehow undeserving compared to American students of African descent? Does anyone control their ancestry? I thought only the soul and merits of a person is shaped by the individual, rather than pre-existing existences beyond their control.

first things first- A CALL FOR GENOCIDE IS GENOCIDE ITSELF.
    Now things that stand out-
    1) America's general public's growing disillusionment with these elite education institutions is also a testimony to how the income and wealth gap and a feeling of despondence and helplessness has pushed ordinary people into the arms of conservatives who harp on nationalism, culture and white supremacy. These things give the ordinary loser of globalization some solace and by attaching himself to a larger cause, he feels dignity that the financial inequality strips him off.
    2) Donor's interference in the matters of university is a classic case for publicly funded education to keep freedom of expression safe from the vagaries of capital.
    3) Lastly, this explains to us why Gandhi's strict obeisance to non-violence makes sense. By resorting to or supporting violence, people end up harming their own cause. The topic of discussion is no longer Israel's brutality on Palestinians but anti - semitism.

On the one hand this and on the other hand that. It is time one looks carefully at social science itself including economics.
There is a distinct reluctance to face facts especially in social sciences.

The point which SG should have stressed upon with equal emphasis, but chose to push aside, is that an American senator asked a question to heads of three highly reputed educational institutions but each, failed to answer properly and so to say flunked the exam. It reveals they placed semantics above humanity and decency. While resigning Dr Claudine Gay realized her mistake and it reminds me of a famous verse of Edward Fitzgerald in his Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam:
'The moving finger writes and having writ
moves on, nor all thy piety nor wit
Shall lure it back to cancel half a line
Nor all tears wash out a word of it.'

Unfortunately General Category go to US and then vote for the same type of politicians that support DEI and Reservations in the US, because of which they had to leave India in the first place.

Those who are asking for separation of politics and universities should check the history of universities and the discourse in them and the role they played in major revolutions, wars and movements
Not just in Democracies but even in countries like China and Russia
