    Well thought out, great job! I also bought a 2016 P90DL with 31,000 miles last month thru Tesla and went through the same process and the same questions. I don’t regret buying the used model S at all as I got the exact car I wanted at half the price and have absolutely NO buyers remorse. Free supercharging and 4/50 warranty can’t be beat. After watching Tesla for years and not quite getting it, I’m now a total fanboy of the whole experience.

    This is exactly why I am going with a used model S vs the 3 .. I can get all the features I want, get myself into the EV market and experience it and feel that much more comfortable in it with having friends who are over 5 ft 8 inches tall so everyone sits pretty comfy. great stuff.. cheers.

    I have a couple of things to add. 1. AP1 has Lane changing on the turn signal.. if you don't get FSD on a Model 3, you don't get that.. you just get lane keeping and enhanced cruise control. 2. Sunroof, I freaking love my sunroof.

    I just made the same purchase / decision. I got the p85d so no Ludacris for the faster 0-60 like you, but 3.1 or whatever is pretty decent still. The M3 also has those side cameras and the better computer for sentry and dashcam mode. Like you said, trade offs to both, I did not end up with the high end audio sadly, but I will add my own sub later on. Regardless, two years later, all of your points still stand. I drive around so much now just having pointless fun, I get horrible range and the performance models already get 20% less battery, but idc. I have fun and charge it free every few days :D

    Bought a used 2014 Model S P85D with ~75K mi for $39K in May 2020 directly from Tesla used car program. The car has a clean history and just 1 previous owner. After some debate and feedback, I went with the used Model S instead of a new Model 3 or Model Y. I always wanted a Model S and this one is at the right price, I can't afford this Model S when it was new back in 2014. I priced it out with all the options and it was ~$120K when new, This car has almost all the options checked, with the exception of 19" wheels thankfully Yes, it's used but it's in great shape and the battery still holds ~95% charge (calculated by charging to full and divide by the claimed 253mi range when new). While it only has AP1 autopilot that works well enough for long trips on highway driving. I am envious of the long-range Model 3 but for the same price, I would've only been able to get the SR+ which is about the same range as the P85D anyway. Really enjoying the car, already put 10,000 mi on it in just the past 4.5month. Really liking the air suspension (can't get that in 3 or Y yet), glass sunroof that opens, Insane+ mode acceleration, ultra high fidelity sound system and the hatchback. As winter comes round I will probably like the subzero package as well. Overall, I am glad I went with this used Model S.

      Compared to older S, The 3 has newer batteri tech, not overheating as fast as S. More efficient, longer range, faster charging, much faster infotainment (MCU1 vs MCU2), TH-cam, Netflix, Twitch etc, more games, newer AP (2,5 or FSD) much more sporty drive, unlike the boaty S. So no, the S is not the better of the two, it depends on who you ask and what they need.

    Walt, I just watched your video and had to add a comment to this thread. Your thoughts are dead on with my thoughts. My wife and I purchased a new 2019 Model 3 Standard Range Plus September 2019. We sold it a couple weeks ago and will be taking delivery of a 2016 75D used via Tesla tomorrow. Since we had the 3, I drove it maybe 2/3 times. I just prefer a larger more roomier car, as well as all of other benefits that come with a used S, such as free super-charging for life, via Tesla. The 4 year 50,000 warranty sold me as well. Initially, I purchased a 2016 manufactured 9/16. Little did I know that all S's made after 10/16 have the ability for FSD. I cancelled my initial order and found one made in 11/16. In the future, should we decide to go the FSD route, we'd have the ability to do that. I'm also thinking that it might increase resale value as well, should we decide to trade up to something else in the future from Tesla.

    Great video. A year later and still the same dilemma. The S obviously looks better, but the 3 is packed with the latest tech. The S is faster but the 3 still feels sporty. The 3 has FSD, you can upgrade both MCU and HW in the S but the cost mounts (as long as you buy post 11/16).
    I am leaning toward the 3 as the S is more complex and I think will have greater running costs in the long run. It's a tough dilemma!

      After you buy new model 3 it turns in to used… and between used models model S is no brainer even if it is older it’s still model S

    • @philliptemple4534
      @philliptemple4534 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mariajones8304 You get government grants when it's new in EU. I can get a new Model 3 for €37k and a €7k rebate making it €30k. It will be several years before it depreciates to the point I paid for it. A refresh Model S that is FSD capable (so Nov 2016 onwards) is coming in around €40k at the moment.
      Is a Model S at €40k better than a Model 3 at €30k on the face of it? Yes. On looks and comfort alone. But when you factor in increased maintenance costs and older tech the line becomes more blurred. Like I get Sentry Mode on the Model 3 which I wouldn't on the S. It's still a tough choice!!

The chip is faster as well.

    4:36 Tesla changed its used CPO car policy again...It no longer offers 4 year / 50 K (for cars under 50K miles). Now warranty is just 1 year/ 10 K miles from the time you purchase the CPO vehicle, which is a BIG bummer...When Tesla breaks out of warranty, expect to dish out major bucks...I think the door handle actuators on Model S costs couple of hundred dollars...even now. And there are 4 of them.

    YOU WERE DEAD WRONG ABOUT FSD released 2 days ago. 3-5 years your prediction-
    Actual was 6 months
    Poor advice all the way around.

    • @kappajohns5416
      @kappajohns5416 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Not really... The OTA update was more like a preview. It only works some times, not all the times, and there are still many bugs overall. For it to be FSD, it would take some years for it to be perfect

      I agree. The squashed frog look of the 3 is something I can’t get past. It may be quicker and a bit more fun to drive than the S, but the front of the 3 is too odd.

    I enjoyed watching your video. I also was shopping for a Tesla earlier this year and was also debating between a used Model S or new Model 3. My budget was lower than yours, under $45K.
    I also like the looks of the S much better than the 3. I’m a big guy, and the S is a much roomier car. Road trips on the S are definitely more pleasant, as it is much quieter than the M3. Also, price, for mid $40K I found a used 2015 Model S85D with only 12,004 miles, in near mint condition! It has the Tech Package with AP1, Premium Sound, SubZero Package, NextGen Seats, panoramic sunroof, and free supercharging. Like you, I also like the 2 displays vs. the 15 inch single display on the M3. I also bought it directly from Tesla and got the 4 year/50K miles warranty, for me that’s 62,004 miles! I was also surprised the car still charges to 268-270 miles at 100% SOC.
    Mine was in San Diego. We flew from Dallas and drove the car back. It was crazy, I had never driven a Tesla! It was amazing. I LOVE IT.

      MEN'S BASKETBALL LEAGUE I now have 26K miles on it. Had one FOB die late last year and Tesla came to my house and gave me a new FOB (after programming/pairing it to a car). Covered under warranty. Otherwise the car is awesome. I still get about 268-270 miles range (depends how you drive).

    Great review. I bought my first Tesla, it was also used 2016 model S but 90D two months ago from a dealer in Maryland and I drove it down to my home in Virginia. I paid around $54K for it and it got around 48K miles. I love the car. It also got free supercharging. The only thing is the range anxiety as I noticed the car loses range quickly, the good thing it still has 29 months left for the drive train warranty. The 4 year warranty already expired. I believe your car as of today will still worth a little more than what you paid for it back in 2019.. amazing.

    I just got my first Tesla a Model 3 Performance with FSD and HW3. Tesla just pushed an OTA software update that gives voice recognition for commands and voice to text for the keyboard. It also recognizes painted turn arrows, RR Crossings, School Crossings ect. It see’s stoplights and stop signs. FSD is going to be ready before bureaucrats allow it in my opinion.
    I’m so happy with the car, I bought it for the tech and performance.
    I’m going to need another car at some point and a used Model S is what I’m thinking for many of the same reasons you mentioned.
