Just to clarify: morale save primarily represents the units discipline and cohesion, not armour. Plenty of relatively lightly-armoured troops (Macedonian phalangites, Celtic Gaestatae) can have high morale saves
Alex Hunt Yep. I agree entirely. A morale save isn’t just “armor” per-say. It represents all of it. Shield, armor, helmet, the resolve, the mettle, the bravery, and the quality level of a troop is what the morale save is when they are dealt damage. It’s just easier to think of it as simply an armor save for game purposes, I think!

Steepled Hat Studios that’s all I need! Just something to show me enough information on combat and rules that I can get behind it. I’m looking into Victrix early imperial romans and their Gallic infantry for my time frame and it looks like Hail Caesar really fleshes out that time period. Thank you for this video and the ones to come!
Patrick L Hail Caesar is pretty supportive of the Late Republic and Early imperial Romans so they’re an excellent choice. Good, tough armies with a good selection of troop types. Always good choices. That and celts fought everyone :p
Steepled Hat Studios thank you for the help! I’m looking forward to grabbing some boxes and getting a Roman army together and a big Celt force to fight them. Great videos and thank you again!
I would say it depends on your potential opponents,Hail Caesar is very easy to learn and teach new players.War and conquest is more involved and perhaps better for the dedicated ancient's player.
I know this sounds weird, but when I saw you I thought: 'Grimes from Turok 2008'.... Okay, now I'll watch the rest of the video to learn about Hail Caesar.
Steepled Hat Studios bright yellow on a miniature always looks good especially if it's orcs but then you got to do like two different brushes to not contaminate the yellow next to the green
I use 25x50mm I believe. The Hail Caesar Standard. Fronts give me about 75 MM for Small cavalry, where my medium would be 150mm - both close to the 80mm and 160 mm i give to my infantry.
I don't really know much about 15mm to be honest - but Hail Caesar uses a frontage system... so you and your opponents should sit down, talk about what size of unit widths you want to use, and go from there! 15 mm should allow for a lot more area on a battle covered :)
Nice looking figures there. Have you tried a game with small units v standard units yet? I have looked at the Republican Roman list and I am not sure that it would hold the line even with the rule about ignoring Hastati loses. I keep thinking that unless you can hit with two small units they won't survive contact against most standard units?
The republicans with their small heavy units are indeed meant to take standard units with two head on but since they’re heavy infantry they’re often more likely to save against standard medium troops. Medium troops have only 6 attacks sustained (let’s ignore clash from warbands for now)so the survival rate against mediums on their own is quite decent. When playing at home against the wife and her using my medium standard numidian warriors it’s often the Romans who win the one on one battle due to higher morale and pilum. Now against heavies it’s a bit tougher because heavies usually have more attacks. So it’s absolutely essential to get two Republican small units in on a Heavy unit. Hellenistic Greeks are really tough to fight in hail Caesar because of all the pike they bring in. But against a foe like Carthage who , in a point based game, can only bring their heavies for 1 / 4 units in the army it’s a little better matched. I haven’t played against any Greek armies but from all who I’ve spoken to who have they say it’s a really tough battle. Fortunately heavy troops are relatively safe from missile fire while approaching the foe, as long as their getting shot at from the front then the enemies arrows and javelins won’t hinder them too much. The scariest foe will be war bands on the initial clash , celts in particular. If you get a clash with only one Hastati unit, you better pray to Mars that you save all those Attacks. I suggest locking shields often to gain the extra morale save after the initial round if they are caught alone.
Oh, and don’t forget. If you are worried that small units are going to get eaten alive remember that only half the army must be the hastati principes Triarii mix... you could always hire a ton of Gauls or celtiberians warbands!
That might be the challenge Justin, to try and win with the multiple small unit formations, you can certainly add Gauls , Italian allies and Spaniards to protect the flank.Although I would dread to fight large warbands!
I'm very late. But I read the rule book however I'm confused on one thing. Can the commander have one huge division under is command without any penalties? Or can the leader from a cohort be a commander as well? Thanks!
Yes absolutely. You could do one giant division if you want. The problem with that is then you may have distant penalties and have to keep more soldiers closer to the commander. That and having multiple fails is possible and much of the army may not move. Commanders are separate from units - they only join units in melee or rallying or similar rules .
Thanks for the walkthrough. Maybe an odd question: is it strange to you that the base sizes are recommended in mm, but battle measuring is done in inches?
Hey there Graham. Thanks for watching! As for the question.. you know, I never really thought it strange. I'm used to most wargames using Inches for movement and measurement, while base sizes I've always measured in 20x20 , 40x40, or 40x60 mm .. haha. Never even once thought about it to be honest!
I’m probably overthinking it. It would be clumsy to measure bases in inches, and exhausting to measure the table distances in mm so there we are I suppose.
Really enjoying this series. Thanks for taking the time to show off Hail Caesar. I’m encouraged by its popularity, and would love to see wargaming keep moving toward such high quality of production in a ruleset.
@@grahamward7 It's an awesome game that is for sure. There's lots of other games I'd like to share too and compare. It's really a great age to game with all the cool rules out there!
Also I got Hail Caesar a while ago but the basing just gave me a head ache. Gonna try again what would you recommend size base I should mount the Guals ? I'm thinking a 100x80mm
It depends . If you have friends you can choose a frontage and follow that. I find basing them on individual 20x20 mm or groups on 40x40 mm is best as you can adjust the size to match most people accordingly !
Hi, I am coming from Warhammer, which tends to put lots of restrictions on what can and cannot be fielded in an army, and what faction combinations are illegal due to pretty much the lore alone, and I had a question regarding army combinations. I currently have an infantry of 88 Spartan Hoplites and 10 Helot Javelin skirmishers, and I was wondering if i could expand my skirmisher division with some Thracian Peltasts. Am I allowed to have a division that contains both Spartan Helot Skirmishers and Thracian peltasts, or am I not allowed to mix them? I figured because they are to be based individually rather than in phalanx formation like the rest of my hoplites that it would work.
Hey there! Thank you for the comment. When I first got into Hail Caesar! and non-point wargaming it certainly was at first difficult to wrap my mind around new concepts of mixing and maxing up armies without restrictions, so I get the feeling! As for your questions, it sounds like you already have a spartan army! That is awesome. And to answer your question: It is up to you. From my understanding, Thracians were north, beyond the borders of what would be considered traditionally Greek, but there are many incidents where they seem to have fought for or against the Greeks. Normally, Spartans would probably have fielded Helots, Spartans, and certainly the Lacedaemonians (which are the people in the area around Sparta, but not actual spartan citizens). Did the Spartans perhaps hire some Thracians? They could have. There's no history to back it, but there is also nothing stopping you in Hail Caesar! to field them in the way you want, be it in the same or separate division. There are a points supplement book that gives a bunch of army lists and points if you want some structure to your games, but to be honest the best games I have played are historical, have no division restrictions and without points - I often field underpowered Roman Maniples that are supposed to be purely Roman divisions, but instead they're fleshed out by all sorts of punic war Mercenaries, which is not exactly accurate for the second punic war historically, but I enjoy it, and my opponent enjoys playing! Hope that helps! Ultimately: It is your game! If you want to have them in the same division, go for it!
