Wayfinder Echoes Review: Is it Worth it After 25 Hours?

- After 25 hours of gameplay, we've finished the story and gotten a taste of endgame and all the systems on offer at this point in early access for Wayfinder Echoes. Here's my thoughts and review on where the game is, the drama on its heels, and some places which still need some work. Minimal spoilers, with a couple aspects of the game purposefully omitted. Have to leave you with some sense of wonder when you encounter them. ;]

I bout it about a little over a week ago and I had a 5 days off and just pretty much played it every day. At 54 hours right now and its the morning so that will change drastically. This game is 100% worth it and i've been telling people to go buy it too.
Agreed! Excited to get stuck in now that I've finished Shadows of the Erdtree. Time to spend a bit more time with the endgame systems and see how silly I can make AP Niss.
I'm so glad you mention getting stuck on terrain. The janky movement can be extremely frustrating.
Yeah, after another couple dozen hours, that’s pretty near the top of the list of things I hope get tweaked going forward
Buying today! I love the review and am glad the game has turned out good, I listened to a fair number of unhappy reviews for changing direction, but I think the team deserve the credit for having the guts to finish and for pivoting so well :)
Hope you enjoy it! Re: unhappy reviews, I think folks need to remember that not every game needs to be a forever game live service. Having a title be a smaller, one-off experience is just as valid, and keeps development focused.
Thank you for a well done video that helps overall perspective and knowlege. A friend of mine and I just started {lvl6} we love the art style and quick combat...brings back memories of Wildstar and Firefall and what could have been :(
Thanks! I'm putting the finishing touches on a video for new players that should be out in the next day-ish depending on how much time I get to work on it :D
Also, I really wanted Firefall to be better. Haven't thought about that game in forever.
How do you have so few subs! This is a quality video dude, keep it up!!
I'm having a very good time farming mythic weapons and really am looking forward to more story. Also this is a fun post.
Solid video and pacing. Appreciated the TLDR at the beginning so kept me going to help w/ YT Algo :) Enjoy your 45th sub o7
Thanks! I think including the TLDR upfront like that for reviews gets the point across quickly (where most people are still watching), and then gives the rest of the video a chance for building more nuance. Glad you liked it :D
thank you for such a well articulated, succinct and informative review! Your ability to reference multiple titles within and across genres resonated with me. You hit all of the same wants/needs in games that I look for, and just wanted to applaud your efforts here! Subscribed!
Glad you found it useful! It irks me when reviewers don't give a clear picture of the gameplay loop(s) and systems; I wanted to give the best vertical slice of the game I could while leaving some space for surprises if people wind up playing :)
Only 14 subs? This was a quality review! Ill be recommending the channel! Great work!
Cheers :D
Managed to drum up 69 more in the last 3 days apparently
Good analysis of the combat, it does feel sharp like that. Great video!
Thanks! I'm looking forward to trying the other characters to see how they play.
had the game since the 11th enjoyed it (havent played in a bit now other games took over lol) im glad the devs didnt just kill the game and from the looks of it they might be able to keep supporting past 1.0
Yeah, I'm glad too. Pretty often people get so hung up on their idea of what could have been that they forget to enjoy what is.
Solid video. Gave me all the info I needed for this redo of the game. Legend!
Love to hear it, ty :)
this is one of THE most enjoyable games I've played over the last few years. Dropping the live-service crap absolutely was a good thing. There's way too many p2w service carp games out there so this is a very welcome breath of fresh air
Agreed - Now if they can get some polish on traversal and do the whole matchmaking thing, I weep for my productivity outside of game >_>
Great video! I decided to buy it and I’ve been really enjoying it. Lots of content and the combat is really really great.
My only nit is that I wish the world had more interactive things to do in it. Like I love the zip lines. Would be fun to have mini games throughout with those for example.
Oooh now there's an idea. Perhaps a later zone could lean into the ziplines and take a page from Jet Set Radio Future. Don't know if the engine could handle that, but it's an interesting thought.
Great review and video! Time to log on and play I guess :D
Rock on! Enjoy it :)
Is this version coming to ps5 I've played the og earlier access version but heard it's only PC now
It should be coming back to PS5 once DE and Sony sort out the transfer of license. No timeline there, but last I heard they were hoping for by the end of summer.
I've been playing this for a few days and still feel a little lost on what the normal loop is supposed to look like. I have no clue what echoes are worth keeping and what things I should prioritize.
Which wayfinder are you playing and what level are they?
@@baldsquidgaming I play as wingrave and I'm currently an 11. Judging by your video it sounds like my current loop of just putting the higher level echo and weapon is kind of the play.
@IIPaleHorseII Yeah, that early you're pretty safe going with the highest cumulative stats on echoes. As you progress the echoes start to scale pretty hard in terms of stat amounts, and then you can lean into specializing. I've not played much of Wingrave yet so i can't verify, but I hear prioritizing AP, then MaxHP/Res, then WP/Break is strong. Right now I'd suggest focusing on the story and side quests as you encounter them without trying to minmax, and once higher level drops are more common, you can find a blend that works best for you :)
Does armor look the same?
From what I've seen each set is different, and you can apply any skins/cosmetics you've found or unlocked, so there's a good deal of room for customization.
Is this coming to PS5?
It was already on PS5 before the separation from their publisher. Last I heard we're waiting for DE to either transfer the license with Sony over, or for Sony to approve a new one with Airship. Unfortunately, only timeline there is Soon™.
I'm really enjoying my time with the game. The combat is great. I do completely agree with the traversal issue. Stuck on terrain, jumps that feel like I just made it but fell off, not doing the ledge grab animation when i expect it, that stuf was a bit rough. But thats a blemish on an overall great game. For the money it really is a fun game to throw on a podcast and grind some dungeons.
I'm hoping traversal improves as we get closer to 1.0, but even if it stays as is, I'm not mad about it in terms of the game overall
Fantastic in-depth review. I have one of the lower tier founders packs and while the combat is solid as it was on launch, the world feels empty without seeing another player in the town or partying up with. I hope in the future you can queue up to join others in some online coop. I bought the game to support my friends that worked on it but they have since been laid off :(
Great channel, subscribed!
Thanks for the kind words :) On the dev reddit AMA yesterday, there was some mention of them working on matchmaking / group browser functionality for implementation soon™; that should go a long way to make things more alive, imo
The Systems around the characters, items, 'talents' and so on are numerous.
Actually I bought the game before seeing your video.
I just thought that if a game can make a comeback like that (you know what) then there must be a lot of dedication behind it.
And yep, absolutely the case.
I'm looking forward to getting more stuck in now that my first character has finished the Elden Ring DLC. Be nice to have something a bit more chill for a while >_>
I started playing since yesterday i think its a fun game. Your explanation is indeed spot on. Yes it realy worth it 😊
$25 for something like this? Easy sale imo. Thanks for hopping in the Elden Ring stream earlier btw; nice to talk with more than just myself :)

Great Video and really love the game. Was tempted to try it on relase but had not enough time so i waited and now that it is solo/coop it is the perfect game for me. It is a perfect mix of Diablo/Borderland and Genshin/wuthering waves
Thanks! Pretty pleased with how it turned out. Shocked the game isn't getting more coverage, it really does scratch the character action + looter itch perfectly :D
Ageing 3080ti
"my aging 3080ti" 😭
Meant it more that I'm pushing that to run the game while streaming/recording and there weren't performance issues. Does sound a bit fwp now that you mention it >_>
All game as service are trash so the decision's very good.
Eh, it's not that black and white, imo. Warframe has generally done right by players (fringe opinions there exist) and their wallets, and it's been doing the live service thing since 2013. Sure, they're the exception here, but it's worth noting.
No devs lied. The game is boring. Play Wuthering Waves. It’s amazing
