Statler: The content of this video was a medium. Waldorf: Why is it a medium? Statler: Well it wasn't rare and certainly wasn't well done. OH HO HO HO HO!
To be clear, both these heads are cast foam latex, then flocked, just like Miss Piggy. They are later than the era when the heads were hand-sculpted polyurethane - that was only a couple of years, when they first debuted on The Muppet Show. When the show became massively popular, and Muppets also started making movies, the heads had to be endlessly repeatable because they were getting a lot of use. Hand carving polyurethane is incredibly time consuming and impossible to duplicate precisely absolutely every time, so sculpts were made in clay and molds produced so they could be cast in foam latex and be consistent. I don't know how the heck anybody got hold of these in any legitimate way - when Muppets are retired from active use, they either get refurbed for museum display, or destroyed so no one can copy them. It's hard to imagine how someone got their hands on these without actually stealing them...
When Adam said there must be like hundreds of these muppet replicas I laughed cause they only make like a few they have some for back up but not a lot. They do mostly repairs
Henson's family donated these and more to this museum. This is a clip from the Jim Henson exhibition in New York. There are more clips from the same exhibit with Adam Savage.

Yes the one with the grey hair is Statler and the other Waldorf. Fun fact: Canonically, Waldorf has a wife that looks suspiciously like Statler, whose name is Astoria.

So the first Statler and Waldorf puppets built for the muppet show were hand carved foam. The first miss Piggy was also carved foam. But as the seasons progressed Statler and Waldorf and Piggy were made from cast foam latex and flocked. It was easier to reproduce multiples of the same puppet this way.

I was the recording engineer for the pilot for the muppet show. The puppet handlers would take the puppetts out of locked cases, fluff the feathers and hair then hand them to the puppeteers.. One set was that of Mt. Rushmore. Even getting super close to it, they seemed to be so real looking. Jim was super nice to tall with.

My favorite pair of dummies. I don't think I would enjoy shows with real hecklers (amateurs shouting at the stage to mock the performers), but the staged hecklers have always entertained me, and these two were the pinnacle of that craft. It's so interesting seeing all the things in the background. I can tell the revolver in the velvet case is from Who Framed Roger Rabbit, but what is the revolver in the bottom-center of the display behind them? If it's what I think it is, I'm shocked Adam didn't mention it. There's no way he isn't looking at all these things between shots. I also wonder which Jeanie bottle that is, the movie or the series. It's such an insane collection of things I spent way too much time watching over the years.
I am told that part of the fixtures for the characters' box set on The Muppet Show are still visible in Studio D at BBC Elstree in Borehamwood. That's where The Muppet Show was made back when the studio was owned by ATV.
The Closest I ever have come to a Muppet was 2006 when I visited the Smithsonian. They had a Swedish Chief on display along with egg beater Chester from The Muppets Take Manhattan (1984) in a case. I can only imagine how unhappy the two of them might have been in Night at the Museum Battle of the Smithsonian (2009). I know I've seen at least two Miss Piggy Puppets on ebay at different times. One in the early 2000's one a few years ago. At the rate of one per episode, plus ten to twenty per movie... Guess, I'm lucky to have seen one let alone two Miss Piggy's in the wild.
5:00 I'm thinking a lot as well. In the late 2000s I worked at a studio who did a series of Pennsylvania Lottery commercials with Gus the groundhog, who was a puppet back then, these days he's CG. My coworker told me they had to remake Gus every couple of commercials because he would just fall apart. And that was just commercials, imagine a whole show!
I just wanna say how much i loved The Mask and how cool it was to see it in the background. Also how weird it was just to see the severed heads of two characters i loved and adored as a real little kid

My boys! Thanks Adam.
Ooooo... The world miss these old fellas so much..
Oscar and the Ghostbusters painting too!
I am told that part of the fixtures for the characters' box set on The Muppet Show are still visible in Studio D at BBC Elstree in Borehamwood. That's where The Muppet Show was made back when the studio was owned by ATV.
I love the painting in the background from Ghostbusters
Those are my favorite caricatures from the Muppets
YESSSSS!!!!! "THE MASK" MASK!
Statler, Waldorf, the mask, the jar from I Dream of Jeanie... There is a lot of cool stuff there...
Now, Jim couldn't get an apprenticeship at the company that bears his name.
I just wanna say how much i loved The Mask and how cool it was to see it in the background. Also how weird it was just to see the severed heads of two characters i loved and adored as a real little kid
