Great video! I love the description of the audiology appt 😝 I did know why you wore the hearing aids though... unless you're born missing the nerve (or other part of the ear anatomy) most deaf people can hear at least SOMETHING with a hearing aid. I can totally understand getting offended by the wording of that question.

I recently discovered you and subscribed! I'm a 30 year old ME sufferer (diagnosed at 13) and I'm a femme lesbian too! I don't think I've ever known another gay person with ME - I always feel like a have a lot of labels 😂. I really like your channel and your openness about everything - I deal with so much shame and basically stopped socialising because of having to explain myself. You and Claudia are so lovely together! I need to find a wife who will accept me as I am! 😆 😘 xxxx
The number of labels involved with being disabled in the LGBT community is insane!! It's really hard to deal with sometimes, so I usually laugh it off with corny jokes. ("did you see that?" "no." "oh, OH I'M SORRY" *laughing hysterically*)
Usually I just say I'm visually impaired and asexual. But sometimes I'm in the mood to see people get really confused and pull out the full terms like, "Okay, well here's my laundry list. I'm asexual graypanromantic. I'm visually impaired due to optic nerve hypoplasia. I also have anxiety/panic disorder and a mood disorder as well as carpal tunnel and a wheat allergy. And I have a number of other symptoms currently undiagnosed, so that's fun. So do you still want to hang out on Friday?" And, you know, then just continue conversation while they stare in shock and confusion. I do eventually break out into laughter and apologize/explain, but the reactions to this are really funny!
I feel you. I discovered this channel recently too. I am gay and deaf, also have Bell's palsy and problems with balance. I don't like labels, but people use them all the time so I stay with those. And I definitely want to find myself a Claudia! haha

I always had a preconception that to be considered deaf, any where within human society, meant you had zero ability to hear. I was never made to understand that it is a gradient scale. Different Levels. Thank you for this video. I look forward to the rest of it.

This is so interesting about your hearing! It's incredible how deaf people can read lips so well. I really admire how positive you've remained although you have some handicaps and the other issues you were born with. It's really inspiring. I love how happy you and Claudia look together and I think it's great you have her. She seems amazing (and so do you!) and I think it's so wonderful to see how supportive and accepting she is :)

Omg! Your guesswork with voices is the same as my guesswork with text!! Like, nearly exactly! Whenever text is small or far away (...at least for me so that means like not touching my face lol) I almost always guess correctly at what it says by context and the vague shapes I do see (that letter goes below the base line so it could be a p g q or j....). The few times when I've gotten it wrong it's pretty funny!
My vision teachers and mobility instructor when I was in school always found this really confusing and couldn't wrap their heads around how I managed to do this so quickly (almost as fast as a sighted person reads text as long as it's good contrast and not too, too far away). And explaining it to anyone other than other's with nearly my same visual acuity (20/180 for me) has lead to some pretty priceless faces :D

You guys are too cute. :D I find the conversations about the hearing interesting. The brain really does just pull out all the stops to piece things together when something becomes damaged. I had wet macular degeneration in my left eye which happily was successfully treated and I regained most of my sight but there is still a small pulsating effect which prevents me from telling the difference from say c and e in small text. I was fascinated during the whole experience by how my brain used other clues to make sense of the visual clues I was receiving (even when the swelling was at it's worst). Likewise, my stepmother who is deaf in one ear constantly 'guesses' about what people are saying and quite effectively. I live in Sweden and when my daughter was younger and they would come to visit she easily communicated with my daughter despite the fact that two entirely different languages were going on. THAT was when I realized just how much of the time she was going off body language and contextual clues. Fascinating stuff.
Jessica well done on reaching 10,000+ subscribers you clearly put in a lot of effort and your videos are always thoughtful and fun. As Claudia is doing your braces I think she can call herself an orthodartist rather than just your regular dartist.
40s & 50s styles do suit you. Have you tried much from the late 60s? There were some beautiful mid and full length dresses with lovely patterns and colours, even on more formal styles. Many just think hippy but the late 60s was an eclectic mix.

Fun fact: Almost every time I hear the word wife I remember the first time I was taught its meaning. My cousin and I were playing a weird polar bear simulator game on our tablets and she referred to the bear's mate as his "wife" and I was like "what is that" and she explained so then I thought it was exclusively a polar bear wife and when I heard it in textbooks I was so confused lmao

@ The word "deaf": In German there is a specific word for having 0 % hearing: "taub" and having a reduced hearing ability: "schwerhörig." The most used dictionary app "Leo" Gives for the noun "deaf" the German translations "(der/die) Gehörlose" and "(der/die) Taube." Both mean explicitly a person with 0% hearing.

My hearing range is the opposite, I hear the high notes better! I have to ask for female members of staff because I really struggle with low voices... I do the same thing with guessing what people say, I think that's how we learn to cope! I don't realise how much of a difference lip reading makes until someone covers their mouth or it's hidden! Two kids at the school I work at had a conversation six metres away in a swimming pool while one was in the pool behind the wall. I was completely stumped that they could talk to each other in that situation!!

Im surprised. The explanation of how you "listen"to others and have conversations, it somewhat fits how I cope with conversation with my ADHD. I miss out on bits and pieces and/or forget instantly stuff people say. So I do alot of guessing, based on context and situation. Its really exhausting with people I dont know very well.

Jessica, do you ever guess wrong? I do, and people tend to respond pretty aggressively or as if I am crazy. It's demoralising, especially since I'm not sure if it's deafness, my depression (so slower cognition), or lazy inattention.
I took ASL in college and we always referred to being able to hear some tones as hard of hearing, but I can see where it doesn't show the gravity of the situation. My professor had us all where headphones a listen to videos that illustrated what hard if hearing is like and you really only hear part of words and it was just impossible to understand what was being said. As for being disabled enough, how insulting is it to have to justify your own condition constantly. Why do people care so much? Everyone is just so overwhelmingly concerned that someone is getting something they shouldn't and it drives them crazy. I know there are scammers in every system, but I also know that they are a rare and small minority so I don't worry about it. Not all disabilities are glaring and in your face, and they are sometimes more sever some days than others. People just need to be more concerned about their own lives. Where do they find the time to be so judgmental?

I'm completely deaf in one ear and it's obviously not the same situation but I sure know the situation in the appointment waiting to hear the pitch to push the button.. I'd usually pick it up with my good ear haha and I always have to weirdly stare at people when they sit on my 'wrong' side... But I've gotten used to it :)
