NON HAN He wasn't Chinese. This is China and "losing face" to an outsider is unthinkable. Never happen.. What gained so much attention, aside from his virtuosity, was his immediate embrace of the culture, learning phrases in Mandarin and using them, taking particular care not to offend in any way ( the judges, show coordinaters, producers, makeup and wardrobe, musicians, cameramen fell in love with him) he went out of his way to help people, never unkind, work always prepared, and swiftly the word spread, throughout the industry, media, this, he is something VERY unique and very special. I agree.
This song is a pearl of the French songbook is a Canadian-French cyberpunk-rock opera called Starmania, written in 1976 by Michel Berger (France) and with lyrics by Luc Plamondon (Canada) and immortalized in the voices of Daniel Balavoine, Diane Dufresne and Grégory Lemarchal. The song's theme is depression: In the 2021 version, Dimash faithfully and brilliantly presents a sentimental and melancholy interpretation! As the singing decisions follow the original structure of the song, which serves to show the psychological instability of the distressed character: From chest voice to head voice and then falsetto, the author aimed to show a broad need to win a long of desperation and the need to reach a very high perspective! Dimash, currently in his concerts, dedicates this song to his friends and acquaintances who left this world!

The song comes from the famous Canadian-French rock opera 'Starmania' (1978) and is known in the English-speaking world as Tycoon (1995). Music: Michel Berger and Luc Plamondon (French original text). The English adaptation is by Tim Rice.
That's how it all started: In 2017 Dimash received a wildcard for the “The Singer” competition in China. He was the youngest participant ever (22 years old). Foreign participants were actually forbidden at that time. The director ignored the ban, believing Dimash would only stay 1 or 2 episodes and then go home.
The competition is not a talent show. Only professional, award-winning singers participate. Nobody knew or heard Dimash before and he had to start first ... and after his first song "SOS" Dimash captured the hearts of over 600 million viewers and a mega-star was born overnight. The next day bodyguards were at his door and now he is a superstar but without airs... just our Dimash.
The competition consisted of 14 rounds over 4 months. The jury consisted of 500 spectators who knew music, not just your average "Joe". They were well screened to be sure they would be able to judge the musicians fairly and competently. With up to 1 billion people watching this TV program and international interest was aroused. The performances were uploaded to TH-cam ... and so we became Dimash's Dears.
The Chinese organizers planned... but Dimash came, sang and stayed ... for the next 3 years in China ... but he only finished second in the competition because he is not Chinese (conditions have changed: 2018, Jessie J. Won).

“SOS d'un terrien en détresse” tells of an earthly being that is in distress and asking for help because he never felt well in his own skin, he better wants to be a bird to see the world in case it could be more beautiful when seen from above. Luc Plamondon wrote the lyrics of SOS about a very distraught young man who just lost his lover causing him extreme questioning of his own existence. Finally being by her lifeless body, he is able to let her go “in peace“ with the words ‘sleep, my child, sleep’. It is a part of an french Rock-Pop opera released in 1979: Starmania. One of the 5 most difficult songs in French language. It was recorded by Daniel Balavoine in 1979 or so and Grégory Lemarchal won of the French reality singing competition Star Academy 2004 with this song.

SOS is Dimash masterpiece!! SOS is an existentialist song, ups and downs in life, depression and death, when you feel you don’t belong here. The Singer , it was a Chinese show for highly respected singers to compete, Dimash was the only non Chinese singer invited because the producer saw him perform for the Chinese and Kazakh presidents and was very impressed. He is from Kazakhstan and was the youngest ever competitor in 2017 at only 22 years old. This was his first performance on the show and the audience went wild for him. When the show was broadcast on tv he had to have bodyguards for the first time in his life as he had become a superstar overnight in China. Dimash is now a world class artist, turned 28 on the 24th of May but touring the world to sell out arenas with his solo concerts, he also performs in concerts with the famous Ukrainian/Russian composer Igor Krutoy, is constantly collecting awards, attends many prestigious red carpet events, film festivals and even models for lots of high end fashion houses. He is university trained in Classical opera vocals to degree level, also holds a degree in contemporary pop music and jazz with a major in vocals, and now has finished his master degree in music composition. He started his doctorate in Musicology.He has been having singing lessons from the age of 5 when his teacher noticed he had perfect pitch . He was offered a place at the Astana Opera in Kazakhstan but respectfully turned it down to pursue his own more contemporary musical career. He is a multi instrumentalist, more than 8 instruments and also sings in 15 different languages and has a range of over 6 octaves from a low bass A2 to a high soprano, plus a whistle register with his highest note so far being a 5 second D8 with vibrato. He is widely recognized as the best vocalist in the world. He speaks fluent Kazakh and Russian, is studying English and Mandarin and has conversational skills in both but not quite fluent yet. Loved the reaction, some advice:
personally I would like a little longer, 2-3 minutes outro. It always leaves me with a feel of conveyor, let's get done with it vibe when someone cuts it. I know it's not the case.
Like when you perform on the stage and at the last note just curtain, never to show again.
A few word what emotions did he managed to summon in you, his technique, the song, the chosen color, the lyric, etc. etc.. Always seeing the video till the very end as he thanked the musicians, conductor behind him, such tiny detail shows/highlights that you are intrested in him. Few words about the environment, live orchestra setting, quality of the video, etc. Thoughts about the earpiece monitor taken out, what would you felt if you were there in the audiance, or as a fellow singer, etc. etc. etc.
All these little things could elevate your reaction to the next level, more complex, more relatable. Show your thoughts, emotions, intrest, curiosity just a little bit even more.

¡Es difícil explicar qué emociones nos transmite Dimash, con su voz celestial! Después de escuchar a Dimash y dejar que su voz penetre hasta lo más profundo de tu alma, algo cambia dentro de ti. Es una vibra y energía diferente que no puedes entender, solo puedes sentir. Inevitablemente, un escalofrío empieza a recorrer los poros de tu piel y no puedes contener las lágrimas, que brotan de forma natural y, he aquí, empiezas a sentir tu cuerpo flotando, casi levitando, yendo a otra dimensión, en un estado de éxtasis. . Porque me he dado cuenta que no va en gustos musicales, en conocimiento ni en edades ni culturas ni nada de eso, va en algo más allá .Dimash nos eligió, nos dio una parte de su alma y su corazón a cada uno , pero para recibir ese regalo tenemos una condición y esa condición es dejarlo conectarse con nuestro ser a través de su música y como hay tantas personas en el mundo y su alma y corazón no podían ser para todos, eligió solo a algunos ,los más dispuestos a dejarse emocionar y atrapar por su voz. Por eso no debemos prestar atención a los que lo critican o no lo saben entender porque ellos no fueron elegidos, no les tocó su trozo de alma y corazón , se quedaron afuera , no dejaron que su luz los tocara , se quedaron en la oscuridad, una pena por ellos porque nunca sabrán el disfrute y el placer que su arte nos proporciona.
Me lleva a pensar en la voz de Dimash y el elemento terapéutico que supuestamente tiene en muchas personas. A menudo he comentado sobre la capacidad de Dimash para transmitir emociones profundas a través de su voz (incluso cuando existen barreras del idioma, Dimash parece capaz de transmitir el sentimiento vocalmente). Por los videos que he visto y los artículos que he leído, Dimash es un ser humano muy enfocado (¡obviamente talentoso!), que tiene un profundo sentido de conexión con las cosas simples de la vida: familia, fe, belleza, niños, amistades y respeto. (No digo que estas sean las únicas cosas que valora, pero parecen ser recurrentes). Dimash suele ser introspectivo, pero parece realmente una persona feliz, a pesar de algunas pérdidas bastante devastadoras en el camino. Su perspectiva me ha hecho preguntarme si es el sentido innato de conectividad de Dimash lo que le permite mantenerse positivo y también le permite ser un narrador vocal/musical tan poderoso. Beautiful heartfelt reaction and insightful comments. Thanks for featuring Dimash on your channel. In my opinion the best performance of this song is the "SOS SLAVIC BAZAAR " version from 2019. The "SOS 2021" version is also a " must see ". Peace and love from Pennsylvania USA.
What hinders the Slavic Bazaar as the best version for me is the board mix fails on the Pavarotti belt, it seems washed out and thin. It’s the most important note in the song and cannot compare to this or the 2021 version. It’s just so important because overall the song is delicate and high notes, then he slaps you upside the head with super powerful belt.
There are three things he does much better on the Slavic Bazaar version over this one, even though they're only a year apart:
1. The French pronunciation is greatly improved, he's no longer sounding the "s" at the end of words, the "s" is supposed to be silent.
2. There's no longer an empty space in the second verse at 4:25, he fills it with a very nice run leading into the staccato part.
3. Another really nice descending run at the end of the third verse, just before the coda.
The one thing I like from this version that he didn't do at Slavic Bazaar is the messa di voce on the very last line, that would've made the Slavic Bazaar version just perfect for me. I still like it better, but I like to watch this version once in a while just to enjoy the reactions of the other contestants.. 😆😆😆

But this 1st performance under all that pressure in a competition as the 1st up was much more impressive considering all of those points.
At Slavic Bazaar the audience knew what he was and he was just performing.
The I Am Singer performance of SOS is why he is an international star now full stop.

His response is that opera is too confining for his vocal range and his goals. He has so much going on in his life, musically, as he is a composer as well as a singer. Check out his video, The Story of One Sky. It is so gripping! He blends Kazakh, Russian and Chinese, as well as other music traditions into his own unique style. Currently, he is working on developing his lower register to enter the range of Oktavists, those superbe Russian bassos whose voices seem to come from the depths of the Earth itself.

He won a VERY prestigious Slavic Bazzar Grand Prix vocal competition in 2015. He sang this song. BUT the development from 2015 to 2017 IS SUPER HUMAN. Not only did he progress by HUGE leaps and bounds vocally, but also in terms of musical interpretation and arrangement. THIS SOS as we hear in 2017 WAS NOT as it was in 2015. In 2015 you could see an emerging great talent.....but his vocal command while on the rise was NOT AT ALL at this 2017 SUPER HUMAN LEVEL yet. I imagine that BIG win really fueled his already great motivation to improve further, AND BOY DID HE EVER! It is a WONDERFUL inspiration to young singers every where that DQ did NOT just "rise up off the half shell", but that he continually disciplined and dedicated himself to the work of sculpting his voice, of honing his craft into this SUPER HUMAN VOCAL MASTERFUL execution THAT it is today. It was thru intelligent work, good teachers and GREAT DEDICATION that he took his raw talent and turned it into the finest instrument on the planet today. Dimahs' great ability did NOT "appear" by just sheer "God given" gifts. WHAT A GREAT INSPIRATION TO SINGERS EVERY WHERE!!.

What a great reaction, and I appreciate your comments regarding his techniques. I started following Dimash three years ago with this very song. Even after listening to it thousands of times (literally thousands) I still get goosebumps and marvel at his abilities. It hard to know where to start with suggestions. , especially since I don’t know what else you’ve reacted to.
Some of my favorites are War and Peace, Stranger in a Strange Land ( where we got to hear his new low voice), Across Endless Dimensions, Your Love, Opera 2, to start with.
I’ll check out your past reactions and will definitely subscribe.
