    Another idea is to use the craft sticks (popsicle sticks) from DT as plant markers in your containers. The cost $1.25 for 100 of them. You can use a pencil to add the name of your plant, which won't fade in the sun, and you can later erase the names and reuse them for other plants. They also help you know when the soil is wet or dry down in the root zone. If you pull up the sticks and they are dry at the bottom where the root zone is, then you might need to water your container. If the sticks are wet at the bottom, then no water is usually necessary.

      I tried using those wooden sticks one year and they molded. Do you treat yours with something first to prevent that?

    The Dollar Tree baskets are excellent for protecting seedlings and small transplants until they’re established. I have a stack of them I keep in the garden for ease of use whenever I need them. They also work great for collecting veggies to bring in the house.
    I’ve grown Grand Rapids lettuce for the past few seasons. It always does well and is a great “cut and come again” bright green leaf lettuce for sandwiches. It will bolt in warm weather though so you have to keep an eye on it.

    Thank you, Pam., I am a fan of perlite, and I buy a super large bag every season. I will head to my local dollar store and see if they have their seeds yet.

      Some have and some have not gotten seeds in. A fellow TH-camr visited her local Dollar Tree and they had other supplies but no seeds yet. Interesting how different ones stock different things. I have to travel about an hour to get to this one but since I was already in the area it was a great deal.

    Hi Pam! I picked up some DT gloves, bypass pruners, waste baskets, and the watering bulbs. Mine didn't have any seeds yet but I'll keep checking back.

    Hi, Pam. Great video! I have used the dollar tree wire waste baskets as cloches last year, they worked great. Was intrigued by your idea of burying one and filling with scraps to let worms compost! That seems like a really clever idea. ❤

      I was so excited when I thought of it! I can't wait to see how it works out this year. Someone suggested using it as a compost sifter too and that seems like it would work well, I need to try it.

      Also I used them last year to protect hostas from voles by burying them and planting hostas in the baskets.

      American seeds that are sold at Dollar tree have terrible reviews. They have a very low germination rate. Maybe spend a few pennies more elsewhere.

    Pam thanks for the good video. I'll be heading over to my local DT store later today. Also you might be able to use that wire wastebasket as a small screen for sifting out chunks of rocks, mulch and sticks from potting soil mixes, etc.

      @FlowerPatchFarmhouse  15 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      Yes, I thought of that too, but didn't test it. I should for sure, thanks for the reminder!😀

      @@FlowerPatchFarmhouse For anyone using bagged potting soil or compost, it might be good to have one of these wastebaskets and sieve the soils and compost through them. Last year I bought several types and brands of bagged soils and compost, and most of them had sticks, rocks, pieces of mulch, plastic, etc. One even had a large nail in it. So using one of these DT wastebaskets as a screen might be a good idea, especially for $1.25.

    I like the idea of not presoaking the pottng mix. Any time I presoak the soil I overdo it and it is just too wet. 😊

      And it makes it so much harder to work with. It doesn't take long for it to moisten when set in the water at all. I am all for easy!
