Howard is not a great defender. He is a great rebounder but stats show that his rim protection is average. The FG% of his personal opponents is about equal to their usual. He feels like he is just out of it, he is not giving his all. Rockets just have zero chemistry. And they have a non-existent bench.
Beverly on D plays just like a friend of mine used to when we played high school ball. He had the same weird stance, but he also had very long arms and was quick. He was a pest for anybody. Even though his overall fundamentals of the game were much lower than the rest of us. His D was incredible, guys didnt even wanna be guarded by him in pratice.
Another benefit to that "lean over" technique Beverly does is that Beverly is always (literally) in your face and yet he's still a foot or two back to where he can't easily get passed by.
hes a 3nD player alot of teams cud use player of his skillset. hes just sortve injury prone and can be a torch for other guards when he gets into their heads
Notice alot of these clips are before his meniscus injury. As a rockets fan hes not a lockdown defender anymore hes slowed down but i still love having him on the team . hes improved his offensive output mightily since he came to houston
+Miltonman100 the meniscus injury should not have long term effects on his mobility until the end of his career. I suspect we'll see him back at full strength this year...
I noticed that too. Beverly hasn't been the same lockdown defender for two years it seems. And in my observation, he gets beat off the dribble quite a bit more often these days. But I guess everything was wrong with the Rockets defense last year anyway haha.
The head forward is the same thing used in boxing a lot. Leads to a pull counter. It gives the opposition the illusion that he's closer to them than he really is, which throws them off since they want to rush past him. Since he is actually a few steps back further than they think, it gives him time to either poke the ball or shadow the player. Kind of like in boxing when a fighter jabs to the head they think is close, the fighter pulls his head back and counters. It's interesting to watch.
coach nick, because the in-depth content on this video was so good, i ended up searching for coach mike's youtube channel, watching some of his videos and then subscribing to it. keep finding guys like these!
That's exactly my position. I'm the best defender on my team and in my last 2 leagues (I'm not cocky, it's the only thing I'm great at XD) The diference is that I rarely go for steals, I normally stick to my defender until he passes/shoots. The wide open leg stance helps a lot, even if in pick-up games against older people it can be a problem. If they are good at dribling they have a great oprtunity to go between your legs. Not a problem if they don't score, but still, it's a litle embarassing. But it's incredibly helpfull to stay in front of the player even if he's bigger. (I'm 17 and I'm only 1,70 cm high, so "bigger" includes pretty much everyone XD)
I remember having a defense instructor from Srbja (Serbia) in a training camp once. He had been a top player on the EuroLiga many years ago. Well, he taught us to "get lower than the offensive player, chin up, and be ready to get back on d, because no matter how you defend, your defensive possession is easy to break"
Part of the reason Beverly's style works so well in the NBA is because reach-in fouls are not called very often except in the most blatant circumstances (kind of like travelling calls). His stance is like a lock-down cornerback in football whose goal is to rough you up at the line of scrimmage and then jump your route at the right moment. He does scramble a lot on defense and gets beaten a lot because of it. His style is basically high-risk, high-reward which since he's an excellent athlete he can get away with it. However he does have issues with the quickest, strongest guards who can keep him off-balance and play through his aggression.
I steal the ball a great deal of the time like that as well. Focusing on center of gravity rather than on the ball. Timing is everything as you apply quickly moving feet for defensive slides. It sure does hurt the best point guards or anyone handling the rock. Great analysis Coach Mike. Curated.
One thing you didn't mention that I recall himself saying in an interview one time is that he is massively well conditioned. He said he trains particularly hard on his endurance and athleticism and you need that to be able to play this intensity of defence.
I think that this video addresses a significant flaw in a static defensive position. I actually incorporated a couple outside-the-sport techniques as well to my defense. I liked watching athletic offensive line get off the line and how the stay in front of quicker people. The great O-linemen have great feet and use their bodies to leverage a moving target. I also like corner back positioning as well with their stances flexible at the point of contact allowing them to explode into a transitional direction. I think martial arts/wrestling is also great to incorporate. A forward leaning but mobile attack stance and using hands and arms to deleverage off-arm action but closing out space as best as possible. Using hands and arms as a defender will get foul calls so best to make the motions minimal. Bad part is that if you don't have Pat Beverly's wind, it gets tiring but I'm 37 so my old ass should be tired after a game. lol.
Now that I rewatch the clips, I realized that I had been doing his technique when I started playing at middle and high school so I can't get crossed up easily. Mind you, that was the time when Tim Hardaway and Allen Iverson were messing people up. The only problem is when they shoot over me because I'm so short. But I had to do a lot of agility and coordination drills to keep myself agile. I can't do them now because of my bad back and my left leg goes dead sometimes.
Defense is such an underrated skill cause if there was a game between a really good scorer against one who is a really good defender the really good scorer would stand out and the crowd would be more interested into that but man if the really good defensive person was on him and locking him down the crowd wont notice how good defense is to stop that offensive scorer
a lot of these fundamentals being taught to kids these days are crap. Especially with shooting. They'll tell you to square your feet to the basket when almost none of the greatest shooters in the NBA do that. Defense is another area where the "fundamentals" can be broken
I locked down someone at the park one day the guy was so mad he wanted to fight me. little did he know I box so it ended up being a first round knock out. need to find a new park to play at.
defend like this. it works i promise. it might feel awkward at first, but his stance is so much easier to get steals with. i suggest you give it a try.
he gives 110% every game that's for sure, he put so much effort putting himself in front of attackers, however, if you watch The Rockets often, you will notice that he's is not that effective defensively, he attempts to steal too much, lack of court awareness and can't read opponent's offense that well, and that separates him from great defenders, don't get me wrong I love the guy, he is wilde and reckless, but sometimes that is a problem.
The most important thing is when Beverly gets beat off the dribble, he will break his stance and sprint to catch up. Many players will just take a swipe from behind and give up.
Interestingly enough the keys to being great at alot of aspects of basketball seem to be breaking the fundamentals. Especially when it comes to shooting. Coach Nick and the Pro Shot Shooting system can attest to that.
he's a very underrated defender. Especially since defenders like Kawhi get so much praise. Although Kawhi's my favorite player, Patrick Beverly "Stat wise" is better. His defense is very good, putting him on the Spurs will give him good discipline because of coach Pop, so he will become a better defender.
Good video as always coach. I hope you make more videos like this. I always like players and teams who plays good defense. #ImIn btw. Subscribed to coach mike's channel.
Wow~ I want an inordinate amount of content just like this! great work guys. btw coach, who do you think will average more points in the coming season... durant or curry?
Interesting info Coach! I have a request for a different video. Seeing the Timberwolves drafted Dunn the trade rumors regarding Rubio are swirling as fast as always. Could you make a overview video detailing the value (on offense and defense) of Rubio? I would love to hear your take on it. I think it's because not many people watch alot of Wolves games (bad history and small market) and because he was way too hyped coming to the NBA, but people mostly say that he's a decent passer, bad defender, and bad shooter, and generally hurts his team. This is obviously the furthest from the truth (he is a a bad shooter, although his true FG% is okay). If he is traded perhaps in December, i think he would fit really well with the Spurs due to the decline of Parker (perhaps cut down Parkers minutes a little and let him run the second unit?). They could give Green and Mills in return for example. Hope you read this!
While I agree in principle, young kids should still be taught the traditional stance FIRST, and once they have mastered that, then shift to Beverly’s stance afterwards. The reasons why is very simple. The traditional stance (butt low with back straight and as vertical as possible) will better developer your butt, thigh and lower back muscles during lateral movements. This stance isolates the lower body and concentrates the brunt of the work on defense on the muscle groups that you need to maintain fundamentals as you grow older. The opposite, is that kids grow up with rounded backs on defense, and they get quickly tired when forced to defend an offensive player by using a wide stance, deep in the squat and low to the ground. Additionally, intiallly, one way to teach kids that he/she is displaying proper defense, is that he is able to keep his chest in front of his defender and bump, without using their hands to hand check. For example. See Scottie Pippens full court press on Magic Johnson = lateral shift, shift, chest bump, lateral shift, chest bump, etc. You have to teach the kid FIRST how to stay in front of the defender. Then afterwards he can develop a more aggressive Beverly posture that facilitates steals and disrupting passing attempts.
tried this. I got hit with a Jamal Crawford behind the back combo and tried to run after them then they snatched it bad......oh my lord, I was running and running and running
this question may be toward bball breakdown but in terms of guards, avery bradley . in terms of SF Kawhi and behind him Iguodala then paul george. Then PF id take draymond green and behind him paul millsap . at center id take gobert then behind hi bogut and Jordan.
LeBron James against any superstar point guard, but for all other positions Draymond Green. I have seen him lockdown post up scorers taller than him by several inches and elite small forwards
Idea Eightysix good luck this year y’all gonna need it as much as a dick Doc was about CP3 being a ball hog he was the reason that team was any good he really kept the ball moving
Of course defense needs a revolution. Offenses evolves everyday so defenses also have to evolve to keep up with them. Defenses techniques during the 70s and 80s would get destroyed by offenses today.
Coach I would love to hear you in a more enthusiastic voice than this. Not that it is bad, but it's not very engaging. Keep up the vids I like them a lot.
In HOU vs. OKC series, Beverley had "great moment" guarding Westbrook, but Reggie Jackson beat him in the remaining games. Fans always ignore it. Beverley's D rely on his quickness and energy. It's easy to wear down. And his PF 3.3 was the highest among PG 2015/16. Apart from this, good defenders have size, BBIQ, communication and even offense. Look at his ON/OFF stat. and Opponent FG%, he is not an elite defender b/c he back to normal after big game.
yoo no one ever says feet shoulder width apart 😂 if you do that, youre gonna get destroyed off the dribble everytime bc youre in a position to take frickin 1 foot slides
Defense is 80% effort and 20% technique
15% concentrated power of will.....Keep the door open would you I'm also exiting.
5% pleasure? or was it? treasure? I don't know, I'm outta here
And a 100% reason to remember the name
that equalled to 120%, cmon man the song was 100%
says people who have a very low defensive IQ... if you know where the player is going to go ten steps in advance (like the best of defenders... such as stockton) you can concentrate your energy in higher amounts only when you truly need it... and the best defenders dont need to make the absurd blocks etc because they can shut down the opportunity before it even arises...
Unfortunately, a lockdown defender in the Rockets is like having a max security locked door and open windows.
the windows being harden's defense? haha
worked with jason kidd and dirk (who is a worse defender than harden). granted they also had tyson chandler
Also Dirk was a paint defender primarily with great wing defenders compared to a poor Perimeter defender with other great perimeter defenders
Matthew Dearnley well, Harden had Dwight too who is still a top 10 paint defender. So, Harden had great perimeter and paint defenders
Howard is not a great defender. He is a great rebounder but stats show that his rim protection is average. The FG% of his personal opponents is about equal to their usual. He feels like he is just out of it, he is not giving his all.
Rockets just have zero chemistry. And they have a non-existent bench.
He has come a long way since the days when Chris Smoove was roasting him
lol
W
GO BACK TO CHINA!
And in his last gameplay vs him Chris said " Finally Beverly is not on the court,i can dribble again" :D
News flash he’s still ass
Beverly on D plays just like a friend of mine used to when we played high school ball. He had the same weird stance, but he also had very long arms and was quick. He was a pest for anybody. Even though his overall fundamentals of the game were much lower than the rest of us. His D was incredible, guys didnt even wanna be guarded by him in pratice.
Because of the wide stance, you use more of a hop to move along the offensive player where as most people do smaller hops/steps.
Pause
Xx_DreVicious_xX Cant make a joke when you have "Xx" before and after your nickname like you're back in 2005.
Because that's when it was made lol. Didn't bother to change it.
But yeah I still can make the joke; you left yourself open.
Another benefit to that "lean over" technique Beverly does is that Beverly is always (literally) in your face and yet he's still a foot or two back to where he can't easily get passed by.
yeah hands down best defender in the league
+warofmankind fuck no 😂
+warofmankind that would be Leonard
He has the perfect 90's style of defense without hand checking... Would get minutes on ANY TEAM in the league
hes a 3nD player alot of teams cud use player of his skillset. hes just sortve injury prone and can be a torch for other guards when he gets into their heads
every time when he plays against my nigga westbrook he tries to get in his head, and he usually succed
+a week ago he did cause him that injury a while back, so he's really in his head
he hand checks every fking play lol
@@TurKishsoulja yeah exactly idk what these guys are on about saying he can defend without hand checking
Notice alot of these clips are before his meniscus injury. As a rockets fan hes not a lockdown defender anymore hes slowed down but i still love having him on the team . hes improved his offensive output mightily since he came to houston

If Harden and Beverly combined then they would be the GOAT
Omfg that would be insane. If they just did some fusion shit like Goku and Vegeta that nigga would unstoppable ;-;
Depends. Maybe we end up with Harden's defense and Beverley's offense. Goku and Vegeta didn't get it right the first few times.
awungsauce True lol

Ur cool
ok
The difference is you must have quick feet and a good feel for basketball Instincts and beating your man to his spot
Coach Mike has a FANTASTIC channel. I very happy he is starting to get a bigger following, he very much deserves it.
Oh shit, I didn't realize how important that stance was, damn, thanks!
Love me some Patrick Beverley, i remember when he was at Arkansas
Who the hell plays defense with their chest straight up while bending at the knees? Everybody I know plays defense using the same stance as Beverly.
Mafuckas with no D play D with their chest up!
plusmaster100 Pretty sure this is how James Harden plays defense O.o
LT DA GAWD
LMAO. No wonder he's a walking bucket waiting to happen.
Most people don't bend their back as much as beverly does tho, he's almost completely leaning over
I would say James Harden plays the most fundamentally sound, by the book, defense in the NBA.
I'm surprised the video didn't say terrible defender because you made one calling curry a lockdown defender
He didn't call him lockdown defender he called him a good defender and that's a huge difference.
+LeGoat is the Ultimate Warrior I would recommend using your time in a more productive manner.

Yxng Leandoer Nah he changed his profile picture and name to James harden 12 weeks ago he had a wwe name/profile picture
he's grown a lot as a player as well, he can shoot the 3 pretty consistently and has improved his inside game a lot since he first came into the NBA.
Great summation coach Mike. B 😉

Holy Shit I didn't even know how important this kind of defense was. Thx Coach I'm definitely adding this to my game
I locked down someone at the park one day the guy was so mad he wanted to fight me. little did he know I box so it ended up being a first round knock out. need to find a new park to play at.
Some cats really think they have skills (some do, most don't) at the park until you put the clamps on that ass then they wanna get upset.
defend like this. it works i promise. it might feel awkward at first, but his stance is so much easier to get steals with. i suggest you give it a try.
Great breakdown these points are going to help my defense in pick up games
he gives 110% every game that's for sure, he put so much effort putting himself in front of attackers, however, if you watch The Rockets often, you will notice that he's is not that effective defensively, he attempts to steal too much, lack of court awareness and can't read opponent's offense that well, and that separates him from great defenders, don't get me wrong I love the guy, he is wilde and reckless, but sometimes that is a problem.
in this aspect the prime rondo did better
absolutely, Rondo has insane wingspan for his size, and he is one of the smartest player playing today, he reads the game very well
The most important thing is when Beverly gets beat off the dribble, he will break his stance and sprint to catch up. Many players will just take a swipe from behind and give up.
Interestingly enough the keys to being great at alot of aspects of basketball seem to be breaking the fundamentals. Especially when it comes to shooting. Coach Nick and the Pro Shot Shooting system can attest to that.
great stuff. As a defensive player, i always get under-appreciated. but i still wana defend every ball
he's a very underrated defender. Especially since defenders like Kawhi get so much praise. Although Kawhi's my favorite player, Patrick Beverly "Stat wise" is better. His defense is very good, putting him on the Spurs will give him good discipline because of coach Pop, so he will become a better defender.
I'm shorter so the lower, wider stance helps prevent bigger players from overpowering you, whether it's face up defense or in the post.
Good video as always coach. I hope you make more videos like this. I always like players and teams who plays good defense. #ImIn btw. Subscribed to coach mike's channel.
Het Coach. How long until the 'Team BBallbreakdown' tournament? I really enjoyed last years footage/breakdown!
One of my favorites!
This is my natural stance when defending.
Wow~ I want an inordinate amount of content just like this! great work guys.
btw coach, who do you think will average more points in the coming season... durant or curry?
Thanks, and GREAT question. I'll go KD
Curry
The durantula will score more.
Thanks, I am thankful Coach Nick wanted to share it with his community. You might also enjoy some of the other breakdowns I have on my channel
KD i have no doubts about it.
hey Coach Nick, was wondering, doesn't this defensive method conflict the "head behind your toes" concept of athletic stance?
interesting. Check Ricky Rubio defence position. Thank for the video
Interesting info Coach! I have a request for a different video. Seeing the Timberwolves drafted Dunn the trade rumors regarding Rubio are swirling as fast as always.
Could you make a overview video detailing the value (on offense and defense) of Rubio? I would love to hear your take on it.

For example. See Scottie Pippens full court press on Magic Johnson = lateral shift, shift, chest bump, lateral shift, chest bump, etc.
You have to teach the kid FIRST how to stay in front of the defender. Then afterwards he can develop a more aggressive Beverly posture that facilitates steals and disrupting passing attempts.
tried this. I got hit with a Jamal Crawford behind the back combo and tried to run after them then they snatched it bad......oh my lord, I was running and running and running
what is a dribbling pocket?
If you had to choose a current NBA lock down defender would you pick?
this question may be toward bball breakdown but in terms of guards, avery bradley . in terms of SF Kawhi and behind him Iguodala then paul george. Then PF id take draymond green and behind him paul millsap . at center id take gobert then behind hi bogut and Jordan.
not even anthony davis?
LeBron James against any superstar point guard, but for all other positions Draymond Green. I have seen him lockdown post up scorers taller than him by several inches and elite small forwards
I would take DRob or Olajuwon as a rim protector.
***** Tim retired, so he is not part of today.
Any clipper fans watching this ?
Idea Eightysix good luck this year y’all gonna need it as much as a dick Doc was about CP3 being a ball hog he was the reason that team was any good he really kept the ball moving

Dude is like a lion with the stance, just attacks at the perfect time
Mind blowing

sorry im so late but this was posted on my birthday
Coach can you do a video on how effective Al Horford will be on the Celtics
Coach when will u be at the YMCA
Can you make one of Avery Bradley, I was reading an article of his stats saying he is a average defender.
I would disagree with the stats on that one
Me too I love AB
A good day to be a rockets fan...
With off season training, I can see Patrick Beverley as being the primary defender to slow down Steph Curry
look at me. I'm the captain now
I think there's a video that Avery Bradley does this too
This is exactly what Kobe talked about learning from Gary Payton
I love me some pat bev
Beverleys stance gives more lateral movement and less backward movement.
Yeah i used get in trouble for my stance
Of course defense needs a revolution. Offenses evolves everyday so defenses also have to evolve to keep up with them. Defenses techniques during the 70s and 80s would get destroyed by offenses today.
Pat Bev could be the next glove.
Coach I would love to hear you in a more enthusiastic voice than this. Not that it is bad, but it's not very engaging. Keep up the vids I like them a lot.
Sixers 2018 champs!!!
beverley so underrated....
NickDaGawd not really.....he is not good offensively
Two Rockets videos in a row. nice
Doesn't this stance make it easy for you to be screened?
yeah, you really have to look out for them, even more than you would normally do (it's my case, at least)
yeah, that's he attacked the ball handler before the play has been initiated
***** I understand if you want to go over a screen, but it disrupts your parefirial vision, so going under maybe difficult.
How does he not get his ankles destroyed when he does that crossover step????
he leans forward and hinges at the hip like mj did in his stance
Westbrook and Beverley hate each other 😂
Pat Beverly is awesome he gets players mad and sets up some dirty plays. Now he got some warnings from the NBA to stop his style of play.
hey coach how about teaching the new guy how to speak into the microphone or fix audio on it lol
Video idea: which NBA player has the best defensive impact on curry
Kevin Love already shut him down.
Avery Bradley, Michael Carter Williams, Andre Roberson, Westbrook(when he doesn't Gamble), but tbh nobody can lock him up sides himself
Avery Bradley & Marcus Smart aka the best defensive backcourt in the league.
Or Mike Conley and tony Allen
Kentavious Caldwell-Pope does a great job

Look at his ON/OFF stat. and Opponent FG%, he is not an elite defender b/c he back to normal after big game.
yoo no one ever says feet shoulder width apart 😂 if you do that, youre gonna get destroyed off the dribble everytime bc youre in a position to take frickin 1 foot slides
but yah 2x shoulder width is a little much
