  • The first video covering work done on a 2013 Yamaha Viking 'side-by-side' ATV. The vehicle came into the workshop with a suspected head gasket failure, though given the age of the vehicle this a rare occurrence and I felt further investigation was needed as to get to the source of the problem - I feared the head gasket failure was a secondary failure caused by some other fault.
This video covers the initial diagnostics where the coolant system is pressurised to determine firstly if the coolant system no longer holds pressure and if so, whether its an external or internal leak.
Once the diagnosis was complete it became clear that the fault was internal to the engine, most likely, as predicted, a head gasket failure. To aid filming and also the extensive cleaning of the vehicle it was decided to remove the engine and complete the repairs on the bench.
The removal of the engine from the vehicle is shown. From the initial removal of the rear tray to gain access right through to the removal (the most difficult part) of the engine mountings and prop shafts.
These vehicles are, in the main, very easy to work on and under normal circumstances a head gasket replacement could easily be accomplished with the engine in situ.
The next video will be covering how to prepare an engine prior to it been cleaned down with a pressure washer and the step by step removal of the cylinder head, barrel and piston.
The third video will cover the step by step inspection of all components focusing on heat damage (distortion) cause by using the vehicle for a long periods in an 'over-heated' state.
Should you have any questions then please add them in the comments section and I'll do my very best to address them.
    Thanks for watching...
