  • The video is about the Northern Harrier. I used the Nikon Z9. In the video I labeled the footage taken with the 800mm PF that I just received about a month ago. All other footage is taken with the 800mm 5.6 lens.

    Great video Peanut! I'd like to add my thoughts and my rankings of the sharpest super-tele lenses I've ever used. I've been a wildlife photographer since age 9 years old and I was a newspaper photographer/photojournalist for almost two decades. Anyway's, I had the Nikon 800mm f/5.6E FL for awhile and it remains the sharpest lens I've ever used. I mainly use the Nikon 500mm f/4E FL and 70-200 FL or 300mm f/2.8G VRII. However, I've owned every Nikon autofocus version of their 400mm f/2.8, except the AF-I, so from the first AF-S, the AF-S II, the G and the E. While I used to love the 400mm f/2.8G and 400mm f/2.8E FL, they remained quite heavy and large as far as front element. I had tried the older 500mm f/4's, like the AF-S II and G versions of the 500mm. However I had never tried the 500mm f/4E FL and when I heard it was both incredibly sharp and only 6.7lbs...I decided to sell my 200-400mm f/4G VRII and 400mm f/2.8E VR FL and I bought a 500mm f/4E VR FL, sight unseen and untested back in 2018. Now back to the 800mm f/5.6E FL, I bought one used right before the 800pf was announced, only because I got an incredible deal at that time, I paid $7,100 USD, total. Then the 800pf was rumored or being talked about online, so I sold it quickly for about $1,000 profit. So why did I sell the best lens (optically) that I'd ever used? The weight and the size, plus the versatility were all negatives that I just couldn't ignore. See my 500mm f/4E FL is very, very close to being as sharp and contrasty as the 800FL, and in my opinion it's the second or third sharpest lens Nikon has ever made! This fact can be backed up by its MTF chart and most reviews, which clearly shows the 500mm f/4E FL is near optical perfection.
    Having had both the 400mm f/2.8G and then the 400mm f/2.8E, I'd say they were both incredibly sharp and I think were a great reference to measure other lenses against. I honestly didn't expect the 500mm f/4E to be as sharp as the 400mm f/2.8G or E, but it was and I think it's even sharper, (only by a tad-wee-bit.) Although I will say there is something special about certain lenses at that high price point, where an experienced photographer can see those small differences. Having been a newspaper photographer for a large news organization, I've and access to and I've shot pretty much every Nikon and Canon camera and lens, especially the pro versions of f/2.8 or f/4 primes and zooms. I've even shot lenses like the Canon 200mm f/1.8 and Nikon and Canon 200mm f/2 lenses. They're all incredible lenses and all of them are very sharp. However there are certain lenses that just have that little bit of extra goodness. I'd rate Nikon's sharpest super-tele's in this order, #1 800mm f/5.6E FL, #2 Nikon 600mm f/4S 1.4x TC, #3 Nikon 500mm f/4E FL, #4 Nikon 400mm f/2.8 S 1.4x TC, #5 Nikon 400mm f/2.8E FL, #6 Nikon 400mm f/2.8G VR, #7 Nikon 120-300mm f/2.8E FL, #8 Nikon 180-400mm f/4E FL, #9 and #10 is a tie between the Nikon 300mm f2.8G VRII or Nikon 200mm f/2G VRII lenses.
    You'll notice I left out most of the 600mm f/4 lenses, because I've used them, and while very sharp, they just used to fall behind the other's by a tad and especially with teleconverter's they took a further hit. They're not bad lenses by any means, and I'm sure some who own them will disagree with me, but I've used every Nikon 600mm f/4 made from 1996-2023 and you'll see I gave the #2 spot to the latest Nikon 600mm f/4S 1.4x TC lens. Now unfortunately I don't own the new 600mm f/4 S 1.4x TC, but I did get to use it and I was blown away, it's sharper than the 400mm f/2.8 S 1.4x TC lens by a bit, a noticeable amount for me, but I have 20-10 vision and I can maybe see these minor differences better than some. Long story short, all of the latest Nikon Z lenses are very sharp and while I did leave some out of my list, that is just because I haven't used them all yet. I've used the 400mm f/4.5 S and 800mm PF, but honestly I didn't really like the 800pf. It's an incredible lens for the money, but it just felt a bit underwhelming for me and I prefer to just add a 1.4x TC to my 500mm f/4E and get 700mm f/5.6 and or use my D500 or crop mode, to get the equivalence of 750mm. For me personally the 800mm lenses just seem either too much focal length or not enough and that point, if 800mm isn't enough...you probably shouldn't be shooting it and or the quality is going to not be too great due to the distances and atmospheric conditions. Plus the minimum focusing distance is quite long on most 800mmm lenses, although it't not too bad on the 800pf.
    I think if you shoot from tripod a lot though and if you're psychically able (you know)...either young and strong or older, but still strong, you'll prefer the 800FL over the 800pf! Plus now both 800mm's are around the same price now. If I had a choice between a new 800pf and a used mint condition 800FL, I'd take the older, heavier and bulkier 800FL all day, everyday. I honestly never thought anyone would make a lens quite as special, sharp and optically amazing as the Nikon 800mm FL, but Nikon surprised me this year with the new 600mm f/4S lens with the built in 1.4x TC! That lens and the built-in TC is addicting and I'm super jealous I don't have one of those magic TC levers on my 500mm f/4E FL. If Nikon makes a new 500mm f/4 and it has the same or better IQ and 1.4x TC, I might have to sell a kidney and buy one. For now though, I'm happy to still use the incredible 500FL, it's probably the most underrated and rare lenses, I've actually never seen another person with one. Plus for years, the 500FL was the only Nikon super-tele lens that was as light as the latest Canon and Sony lenses, and just as sharp if not sharper. My ultimate point being, I'd be careful before buying an 800mm that you make sure that much focal length and that little of versatility is okay for your needs. If you prefer light weight and native Z-mount than get the 800pf, but if you want the ultimate IQ and matching 1.25x TC, which gives you an incredibly sharp 1000mm f/7.1 lens, the older 800FL is by far the best lens image quality wise, I've ever used.

      Hi Patrick, thank you for commenting. Man, you have used a lot of lens. I do agree with you. The 800 5.6 is a great lens, it is super sharp. I think at 6,500 its great in the lineup because of its lightness and I love the AF and it is very sharp.
      I actually sold my 800 5.6 and 600F4 Fmount and went tor the 600mm f/4S lens with the built in 1.4x TC, which I am enjoying a lot. I am not noticing any sharpness or AF hit with the TC engaged which I was concerned about. Patrick, thanks and lets chat soon.

      @@PeanutChuAdventures Thanks for the reply, I appreciate it. Congratulations on the new 600mm f/4S 1.4x TC lens!!! That’s awesome and I’m I bit jealous, I’ll admit. That’s such an amazing lens that I would love to have one someday, but maybe or rather a 500mm f/4 version? Coming from the 400mm f/2.8 (lenses) being my bread and butter for so long, I thought 500mm was about as long as I was willing to go.
      For a long time I had both a 300mm f/2.8 and 400mm f/2.8 and I realized I often used the 1.4x TC III on the 400mm f/2.8, giving me 560mm f/4. So I thought 500mm would probably be a sweet spot for me, between 400mm and 600mm. With the option of having 700mm f/5.6 with 1.4x TC or 750mm equivalent FOV, option with the D500 or D850/Z9/Z8/Z7 in DX (crop mode!)
      However a built in teleconverter is just such an incredible feature you really can’t appreciate how convenient it is until you’ve used one! Like most wildlife photographers and photojournalists, I know how tricky it can be to switch while in the field or on assignment! Especially if you’re working/holding 2-3 cameras and lenses at once. Plus that new 600mm is so sharp even wide open, that even with the TC you’re getting an incredibly sharp image! Anyways the only issue I have is I prefer the D6 to the Z9 and therefor I’m not using a Z9 anymore.
      So I’m not really able to fully buy into the Z-mount system yet. The only lens I have is the amazing Z-mount 24-120mm f/4 S. It’s so incredibly sharp for a zoom and at for that price, I was and remain blown away by it. I think I got a really good copy as well, it’s extremely sharp at every focal length and aperture. Hopefully Nikon will come with out a Z9H or more sports/photojournalism camera, but I doubt it! So for now I just have a used Z7 and it’s what I use along with the 24-120mm f/4S for a travel or lightweight and do it all combo! Anyhow, nice chatting with you as well.

      @@patricksmith2553 Before I went to the z9 I was also using the D6. With he 8005.6 that was a great combo. But, I was really wanted the z9 for the video capabilities and it was worth the wait. Because they were behind Sony and Cannon with video tracking, especially birds in flight. I would have gone to an A1 or R5 just for the video, lucky I did not have to. Talk Soon and thank you.

I've always kept my lens attached and put it in a backpack zipped up, but the 500PF was the longest lens I had. Lovely stuff, Peanut My cat enjoyed it, too, following the Harriers with her eyes! This is my photographic nemesis. At the local wetlands, they steer clear of parked cars and more so of photographers who get out of cars, but someday I'll get some shots of this bird. I, too, am using the Z9 and the 800 PF. Were these shot at 60 or 120 frames?

    hey, I have a question, Ive been watching your videos and i see that you switched a while back to the Z9, I currently have the D6 with the 600mmF4e lens and im really looking in to the Z9 with the 800pf... Im shooting eagles and owls and such down in swfl, Currently by newburgh ny... But ill be heading down next week and im hearing the z9 tracking is a lot better the the D6.. Whats your thoughts on this subject? Thanks love the videos

    • @PeanutChuAdventures
      @PeanutChuAdventures  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi TheOlman35,
      First, thanks for watching my videos. In January, it will be 2 years with the z9. I also was using the D6 before switching. The z9 tracking is different than the D6. The D6, you kind of know that it's tracking because in the viewfinder, it looks clear. But, with the z9, you will see a box that attaches to the bird. After a few weeks of getting used to it. I think you will love it. With the latest firmware, the AF has gotten more sticky and they just came out with bird subject detection. I tried it today and it works great. I do mainly video now and the AF works great with video. I have taken some pictures, and I do love the the stickiness. Also, for pix you get 45mb rather than 20mb, but D6 lowlight is better because of it.
      If you are using the D6, I assume you are good with tracking. Using the z9 just makes it more accurate, easier and you will see that you are tracking, you are not guessing anymore if it was tracking. What you will also love with the z9 is that you get what you see in the viewfinder. And reviewing pictures and video can be done in the viewfinder where you can see all of the detail. Ok, I will move on, you can tell that I enjoy the z9.
      Ok, the 800PF. At 5lbs it's very light. I find the AF on the 800PF using the silky engine is faster and works better than my 800 5.6 and 600 f4 FL adapted lens. Especially when a bird is flying directly at you. I find the 800pf will track it. While my adapted lens will lose focus most of the time. Now, I have not test it with the last few firmware updates. When I got the 800PF in January and I saw that it tracked birds coming at you, I did not go back to the adapted lens.
      Ok, Now, the 800pf is sharp, but the 600mm and 8005.6 are sharper and more detailed and it can be noticeable, with video its not as noticeable. There is just more glass. I am actually selling my adapted lens and going to the Z600mm because of the AF and sharpness. If you can swing it, that may be another option to go for the z600 with the tc built-in, it quite a bit more. But, I have not used it, so I cant speak about it.
      Hope this helps.

      @@TheOlman35 Well, as you know, Nikon does not want to give you everything for $6500 in the 800PF. But, they did give you great AF and 6500 worth of sharpness. But if they gave us big glass sharpness, then what will entice us to go to the $15500. If you want sharpness that you have in your 600F4, you may be a little disappointed. Thats what I am seeing. Waiting for the z600, on backorder even with nps.

      @@TheOlman35 , Great, enjoy your new Z9, let me know how you like it. Give it a few weeks, like anything, in the beginning, there is slight learning curve. I did a AF video on how I use the AF, its for video, but similar for pictures and may help. Unfortunately for both of us, I noticed that the trade in values for non Z stuff has gone down quite a bit. I am trading in my F mount 600 and 800 and the values really dropped. But, I would rather get something than let it sit around unused.

    Hi Peanut, since you are one of those very few people to have both these 800s... which one do you prefer using PF or the E FL lens?

    • @PeanutChuAdventures
      @PeanutChuAdventures  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Aniket,
      I got the PF in December and have only done video with it. My expectation was that I was only going to use the PF when I had situations where I needed something lightweight. But, after using it, it has far surpassed that expectation. I really love it.
      It is very sharp.
      AF comparison is still ongoing. I have been testing the Z9 with different AF sensitivity settings with the PF lens and the AF is working excellent. With the E FL, I was having trouble with raptors flying directly at me where it would lose focus sometimes. With the PF and AF sensitivity set to 1, the AF with raptors flying directly at me is working great. Its strange because the video manual says to use 7 to keep focus. I have to try this out on the E FL to see if it works. If it does work than the AF on both lenses would be equal to me. I will let you know my findings.
      The only thing, and only by a small margin is that the E FL, probably is a little bit sharper and backgrounds a little smoother.
      The hood and hood cover are better made on the E FL.
      The collar ring is smoother on the E FL.
      The lightness on the PF is a huge plus.
      But, overall, the PF for the 10k less is really superb, its profession level, no question.
      Thanks for watching my videos. Talk soon.

    Nice work Peanut! Excellent image quality and being 120p it wasn't even oversampled -- that's what I like most about the Z9. AF looked like it was hunting in some of the shots -- some day we'll have to compare notes on AF techniques after I get more time behind the Z9. So what's your impression of the 800/6.3 PF vs. 800/5.6 E?

    • @PeanutChuAdventures
      @PeanutChuAdventures  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hi Gary, AF sometimes tough when subject flys directly at you. Nikon hopefully will clean that up with firmware. I really am enjoying the PF, so light and sharp and great AF. The 5.6 goes to another level with sharpness, and background rending is top notch.
