    This was a huge song for me. I got into Rush in my junior year of high school. When I graduated in '92 I was already taking lessons from a guy who played in a Rush tribute band. It's because of my interest in Rush that I met him and he helped me decide to go to college. College led to a lot of amazing adventures. Thanks to Rush convincing me to 'roll the bones' I've had an amazing life.

      I dont believe it was bass on the album. Our guy here played it on the bass but im almost positive that was a synth. And live geddy always triggered this part, never played it on the bass.

      @@trenkenTo me it sounds like a bass guitar with an octave pedal on the album, too fluid to be a synthesizer.

    • @trenken
      @trenken 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@redgamer821 when i listen very closely to it, it does not sound like fingers on strings to me. Everything is too perfect, too on point in every note to be a human. Ive been playing bass for 35 years. If i put on an octave pedal and play this, its not going to sound like the album.
      And this guy who covered it is also an excellent bassist. Its sounds very different than the album bc hes human. It sounds organic when he plays it. Its the same with scars. None of that is bass. Its a synthesized part. And not surprisingly, it was only one album before this.

    In my mind, Roll the Bones is "New Rush". All that comes before is "old Rush" and everything before Farewell is "very old Rush". Crazy to think RTB is already 25 years old! Also, I must say that for a man who doesn't teach music, you might be one of the best bass teacher on the Internet. Your videos augmented my repertoire by 20 songs at least! Possibly the most under-rated bass line of all time, and you sir are possibly the most under-rated cover artist of all time as well. I was rolling back through some old favorites and noticed I had somehow not yet registered as liking this or commented, and I only managed to kick it up to 394 likes. It should be at least a couple of orders of magnitude higher than that in my opinion. You truly give to mankind with these covers.
    Topic 1: Tone from your hands. This is real, I think. Isn't it? I think I do that. I move my pick hand up and down, I try different picks, I'll finger-pick, I'll mute with any part of my hand that's nearby, partially or fully, until I feel like the tone works for the passage, and then I quit worrying about it. I just imagine that's how he did it too, how you do your covers. You don't really seem to care overly much what the original recording was supposed to have been done with, from what I've seen. You have an extraordinarily tasty collection of basses, and you can always pull out something completely different and fiddle with the knobs and where your pick hand sits etc. and wind up about the right sound and do your cover.
    Topic 2: This is one of the things that convinced me very early that Geddy was a genius. Because, even with the recording and rewind and pause etc. you can spend HOURS going over a few seconds of that recording and never be completely sure exactly which note he uses in passing in some of the melodies. Been there, done that, got a custom t-shirt, ex-girlfriend took it. I digress.
    Hope you're well.

      @TJH3113  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, I'm glad you liked it. I'm quite content with my views, likes and # of subscribers. I don't promote my channel on any other social media and things are still manageable. I like being able to respond to each comment. If my channel got much bigger, that would become more difficult to do. I'm glad you're here and finding some value in the channel.
      Topic 1 - I guess it is to an extent. The way you have the bass set up has a lot to do with the sound/tone you get as well. No, I rarely try to tailor my sound to how the recording sounded. This is mostly because I don't have the skills to do so and, also, that I am most comfortable hearing myself a certain way. Actually, I'm not a big knob fiddler. On my 2 p/u basses I most always have both p/u's on and volumes and tone full up. You're right though, plucking the string just an inch or two in either direction can have a drastic effect on the tone of the bass.
      Topic 2 - Yes, I've been playing some of these Rush bass lines since the albums came out and I can still pick up tiny details here and there. The amount of detail in his bass lines is like nothing I've heard before.
      I am well and I hope you are as well. Take care.

      @@TJH3113 Yeah I wouldn't suggest you shouldn't be content, sorry if it sounded that way. Just disappointed with the audience, not with you. Or with the line. Get out there and rock. And roll. The bones!
      Sublime.

    Man, when it comes to your ability to geddy up on the bass, you inspire me to work harder at what I do. You have an amazing talent. The big question, for me, has always been this:
    "How and in what universe is Geddy Lee able to sing and play what he does"?...

    • @TJH3113
      @TJH3113  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Joshua!
      Geddy has explained that he'll alter what he plays live in order to accommodate what he's singing. Not that he dumbs the bass lines down. He just may streamline some parts that he plays beneath the vocals.

    That Ibanez sounds great! That cruise sounds perfect and would probably wind up being something you'll smile about for years to come:) And yep, all that tone is always coming from your hands. You've "got it" Troy! Lucky you! Stay well and hope you don't get bored and continue sharing the music:)
    Congrats on the 25th! Hard to believe isn't it?
    Have a great summer!

    • @TJH3113
      @TJH3113  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Lori A Thanks. I really so like how they sound and play.
      We're leaning away from the cruise at this point but things might change.
      As for the "hands" thing, that's a little misleading. If you think about it, "hands" means a lot of things - where you pluck (an inch in either direction can make a big difference in tone), how hard you strike the strings... And then how the bass is set up, pick-up height, string gauge...those things add to the "tone" as well.
      I'm still playing and enjoying it as much as I ever did, it's just harder to find the time to respond to comments. I feel selfish posting and then not responding.
      It's amazing how time flies.
      I hope you have a nice summer as well. Lynn's concert season this year is unprecedented. So far - Black Sabbath, The Who, Billy Joel, Martin Barre, Kansas, Alice Cooper...and a bunch more to come.

    • @la196
      @la196 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +TJH3113 LOL, who has time for a cruise anyway! :) Gotta go with that 25th all summer anniversary celebration! So true regarding all the variables of what makes for tone. My basses are set up a little different for different reasons. Compliments of Stew Mac:) But what about that player that can pretty much pick up any instrument and make it sound good:) That's usually something special:) I know you're humble but...I just think you have something "special" with your technique and abilities.
      Regarding replying to posts....Its hard enough as it is keeping up with our own family and friends when we have to work not to mention keeping up with thousands of TH-camrs:) It's all good!

    • @TJH3113
      @TJH3113  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Lori A Exactly. And it's touted as a 5 night cruise, which "technically" it is, but it departs early evening on Monday and arrives back in port at 4 a.m. on Friday. Oh and the " 25th all summer anniversary celebration!" was happening without regard to our anniversary status, thanks to Lynn.
      When I started accumulating basses, I did so with the intention of setting them up differently for different sounds more appropriate for different types of music, but that quickly went out the window.
      I know a lot of people don't reply to every comment but that stuff weighs on me.

      I really feel that once you get past a certain price point, say $2,000, you're talking about status, not function or quality. I feel the same goes for cars and food (of course the price points are different). And of course different rules apply when talking about vintage instruments.

    I don't remember where I read this, but I remember Geddy mentioning in an interview that the reason he doesn't tour with the Wal basses anymore is because quality replacement parts are getting very hard to find. The "new" Wal line doesn't have the same quality standard as the old ones so it makes it harder to bring it out for the rigors of touring.

    • @TJH3113
      @TJH3113  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Steve Maturo I hadn't heard that. I know he was looking for a rawer sound which is why he went back to the Jazz bass on the Counterparts album

    • @sjfalcon2001
      @sjfalcon2001 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +TJH3113 I know he gave the sound as the reason he switched back to Fender with Counterparts. I think the interview I saw was more recent. It might have been an R40 interview. I seem to remember him being asked about not using the Wal and the Steinberger on the R40 tour.

    • @RCAvhstape
      @RCAvhstape 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Absolutely. It's interesting to listen to the concert DVD; given that he's using basically the same signal chain for every bass, you really can hear the difference in tone for each one. The Ric 4005 (actually a 3261) he uses on Closer to the Heart has a really mellow sound compared to his P bass or his other Rics, for example.

    • @TJH3113
      @TJH3113  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Helium Road I heard he was using the same modeling program that Alex was using. I forget the name. So I'm sure they spent some time coming up with a preset for each bass. I thought the hollow body Ric was one of the weaker sounding basses, along with the Zemaitis. In my opinion, that P-Bass blew everything else out of the water.

    Yes, that Precision does sound great (and it does sound like Geddy). However, I put in the DVD midway through your performance and it is an amazing contrast in technique! I don't know how Geddy plays anything with that pecking finger of his. But, you know what they say, "Geddy Lee: If he used more than one finger, we would all die." I do remember one of the basses sounding "rubbery," like those little basses that had the silicone strings.

    I enjoyed your topics, especially number 1. If there was ever proof that it "comes from the fingers" then the R40 show was it. I feel differently about the Clockwork (actually, more accurately would be Counterparts through present day tours) tour though. I'm one of those weird people that LOVED 80s Rush stuff, especially Power Windows. BUT, I LOVED the modern tones they used live - the Orange Amp with the Jazz Bass through it and Alex using a Marshall with a humbucking Les Paul - it gave those songs more balls that I always thought they lacked on the albums. Simply for completion's sake, I wouldn't have minded seeing the Wal brought out for RtB on R40, but I've always thought it sounded better with that jazz bass sound.

    • @TJH3113
      @TJH3113  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Alex M Thanks. I thought the Wal (and even the Steinberger) were better suited for Geddy's live sound. They were more focused and midrangey. The Jazz basses seem to be too broad sounding and boomy - just low end boom and brittle highs.

    • @alexm2623
      @alexm2623 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree that they did a better job of cutting through all the other instruments, but I've never enjoyed their tone. I think a great example is the song Marathon. When I listen to Marathon from the 80's compared to the Time Machine Tour, I much prefer the modern sound. I love the tone and aggressiveness both the guitar and bass add to those 80's songs. When listening and watching the Blu-Rays with quality headphones, it just blows the old stuff away IMO. However as an audience member, the tones get muddy and lost in the "wall of sound." You can't hear any true articulation. As an audience member, I preferred the Wal because it cut through the mix. There was ONE single exception though, and that was the Toledo show during the Time Machine Tour (the show immediately before they filmed the Blu-ray). I don't know how or why, maybe it's the acoustics of that venue or the number and positioning of the audience members, but I was in the 4th row, aisle seat "between" Geddy and Neil. It was a FANTASTIC mix that night. Not too loud, not too quiet, you could hear the instruments and all their tone, it wasn't muddy, and the instruments didn't cover each other up or compete. It was that "once in a lifetime" show. I've seen them dozens of other times, but none with that clarity or sound. It helped that they were using it as dress rehearsal for the videotaping the next day - everyone was ON it. If you can get ahold of a soundboard bootleg of that show, I encourage you to do so. I've seen it out there, and think I have it saved on my other computer. That show to me is what that Roll the Bones show is to you.

    3:00, 3:11, onwards. My least favorite part of the song was my favorite part of this cover. The lyrics are just kinda weird, but your tone in the lower register is amazing there. Maybe I'd never heard the bass part there well in the actual song, but the bass part there is awesome and that certainly helps, I guess.
