    We have been using 8 150W V mount (Broadcast / blue) bebobs for about 3 years now and can highly recommend them. We mostly use them with our travelling studio for LED light panels and an Atomos Sumo display. I’m definitely interested in the micro versions especially for flying and pairing with smaller devices like our MixPres. As has already been said USB-C instead of USB-A would have been very nice. For example powering the smaller MixPres without Hirose adapters.

    Is it better to plug the BMPCC4K into the d-tap from the Tilta baseplate versus the 12 volt output? Or maybe just the d-tap on the battery? Thanks 🙏🏽

    Hey Curtis for most purposes do you use AB mount batteries or V mount? For example for your aputure 120d did you get a A mount or V mount? I recently purchased a 120d ii and it came in A mount but I was wondering if I should exchange it for a V mount?

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I prefer AB Mount - better physical mechanisms hold the battery in place and the release seems more robust as well. But because V-Mount is so ubiquitous, I do have plenty of v-mount batteries as well.

    Got the micro98 a few days ago, initially only because my bigger PATONA V-Mounts will not be able to get on my flight with me. But I have fallen in love with the form factor so much - it makes my FX6 setup look slick af and is much more handy - that I will probably also go for the micro 200 and use my PATONAS with my aputure lamps from now on.

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ah yes, the form factor is such a step forward from my Anton Bauers, though I'd probably trust the Anton Bauers for heavy current situations (e.g., Arri Alexa, lights, etc.) as they can stay a little cooler with their larger size.

  • @roryonabike5863
    @roryonabike5863 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hi, Bebob also sells larger, heavier batteries with the same capacity. What do they say is the trade off for the smaller dimensions and lower weight of these micro versions?

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Good question, at least some of the larger v-mount and ab mount batteries from bebob have a larger peak load rated at 20A so they'd be better suited for high current jobs.

    Hi Curtis. I noticed you chimed on one of Caleb Pike's videos One of Caleb's watchers suggested you two collaborate. That is an awesome idea! How about a music video? I'd like to see the Zoom F6 in action with a few Deity mics like their wireless lavaliere, S2 and D3 Pro. Perhaps you could do a 2 camera shoot with both Blackmagics and then take us through a basic edit in Da Vinci Resolve. It'd be awesome to see those excellent flat panel LED's Caleb showed off on his rolling TH-cam studio video put to great use too. I'd also love to see the Rotolight three light kit perhaps with one of their larger lights as a key. You could take a few stills using the Rotolights as flash guns along the way. Perhaps set up the A6400 auto-documenting the whole thing. Sound like a plan?

    I found Bebob batteries last year when I needed to purchase a few new batteries. I have to say, aside from the quality, the biggest feature that drew me to them was the twist dtap. I’ve found them to be solid batteries and while it might seem like a gimmick, that little flashlight has saved my bacon a time or two.

    One other question. Have you tried using that USB-A port to charge a smartphone that takes USB-C or Lightning? Result? I’m surprised that it’s USB-A rather than USB-C in the first place. Unclear from Bebob’s web site, but from your video it does appear to be USB-A.

      David Love if this product is USB-A, as it appears to be, it will be obsolete within a year. Very surprising given the price point on what is a fairly new product. It makes no sense to buy a product this expensive that doesn’t have a USB-C port unless you’re using what is quickly becoming legacy gear and don’t want to use an adapter.

    I’m at a lose. I have a rig around a v mount Shape D-Box power disruption plate. But I getting a TON of noise in my audio make it completely unusable. Here’s my set up: A Black Magic Video Assist 12g powered using the d tap. A Sony A7iii through a dummy battery to the 8v connector. And, a Sound devices Mix Pre 3 through the usb connection. I’m thinking this is a ground loop issue... but I have no idea. I’m super disappointed with the noise and not being able to use the d Box as advertised. Any advice?

      Hi MyReview1, As a test, do you still get the noise if you detach the MixPre from the rest of the rig? I've heard several people complain that they're getting interference between their Sony A7 and Panasonic GH cameras and the MixPre. The solution is often to place a quick release plate and receiver between the camera and MixPre. That may or may not help in your case but worth a try. Best wishes!

    • @tomdchi12
      @tomdchi12 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      On paper, a 120w draw would deplete a 98wh battery in about 98/120*60=49 minutes, but the harder you deplete a battery, the less total power you get out of it, so it's likely somewhat less (and I suspect the 120d pulls a bit more than 120w from the power source in order to output 120w at the head.) At full power, I would expect about 40ish minutes for the 98wh unit, but it would be useful to get some real-world testing to confirm.

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      For the 300D II, Aputure recommends batteries spec'd to deliver 15A continuous current so you'd need to move up to the bigger bebob batteries. These are spec'd at 10A.

    Great to hear that they have a cell replacement program. These batteries aren't complex at the level of quantum computing, nor are they some obscure black magic (pun sort of intended?) The cells inside every v-mount/gold mount will eventually fizzle from use/storage, so it's very wasteful (environmentally and financially) to throw out the case and inner circuitry, rather than being able to replace the cells.

    • @hex_7187
      @hex_7187 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bugz We do exactly this with a couple of MixPre 3s and the larger/original bebop V150. We have a couple of applications where we place a MixPre 3, a wired +48v Shure boundry mic and a bebop battery, to which we can’t return or monitor for 8-10 hours. We use the Hawkwoods Hirose adapters to get power from the battery to the MixPres. As a side note the addition of 32bit float has been great for us in this application.

    • @hex_7187
      @hex_7187 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      An additional thought. You can avoid the use of the Hirose adapter on the MixPre by using the bebop’s built in USB port, and a USB a to C cable. It’s a while ago that I tested it, but it works. The only caveat being that it will operate in low power mode restricting you to 2 phantom powered channels, no HDMI and I think no Bluetooth. It’s a shame the new micro batteries don’t have USB-C because this would have been perfect for the smaller MixPres.

    I’m sure that Curtis Judd means well, and I like his channel, but this is a perfect example of why it’s wrong for people to review products that they have been given for free. First, it is wrong to bury this information, which in this case is at the very end of the Pros vs Cons card, which I suspect most people skim. It is not in the description and it is not in the audio. Indeed, it isn’t easy to square, as a matter of plain English, what Judd says at 07:05 with the fact that Bebob gave him these batteries for free.
    Equally importantly, there is no discussion at all about basic issues, like what the performance cost is of using these micro batteries rather than Bebob’s standard batteries, or the fact that the USB port is USB-A, which is rapidly becoming obsolete and won’t fully power newer devices, such as a MixPre, rather than USB-C. When expensive stuff is free, one doesn’t tend to ask basic, let alone hard, questions, as this video demonstrates.

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Rory, Thanks for sharing your perspective. My review is not perfect - it is merely my perspective based on the experience I've had with the limited number of cine batteries I've used. But if I were buying cine batteries today, I'd definitely prefer these bebob micro batteries vs. the Anton Bauer, IDX, or cheaper V-mounts which I do have and purchased with my own money. My reviews, just like ALL reviews, are completely subjective and should be taken as a single data point, not a definitive answer to the question as to whether YOU should invest in the product in the review. I Have no desire to mislead, but yes, there are serious limitations to ANY review, including mine.
      As to the question of reviews of free gear. This is a serious problem I have thought about long and hard. I agree, there are limitations and risks. But then again, if we lived in a world where nobody but someone who has used almost all cine batteries was considered worthy to review a new cinema battery, there'd be a serious paucity of reviews available. So for now, I have decided that my limited experience is better than no review at all.

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Also a challenge for you: are there ANY Cine batteries as of Nov 2019 which have USB C outputs let alone all the features of these batteries? Granted, you bring up a good point - one could power devices like the newest generation of consumer grade audio recorders with USB-C if these batteries had USB-C support. But a few things: Cine batteries are designed for pro grade cinema cameras, and these batteries have been out for a while. They’ve been on the market for some time. All that aside, I hope bebob sees this thread as adding a USB-C PD port would be a welcome addition however there may be design/engineering constrains given the PD specification.
