    I just realized how much Harry Potter and Tom Riddle/Voldemort had a similar up bringing. Both characters were orphaned as babies, they grew up not being liked by the people in the place they resided at, Harry and Tom both felt like they didn't belong, they both spoke parcel tongue, they loved escaping to Hogwarts each school year to get away from the muggle world, and they each had to discover their ancestry bit by bit while growing up.
    Though they have these few things in common, they viewed the world and their situations in their lives differently, which in the end lead to them taking different paths as they grew up.

    Nice video! But I'd like to bring up that the Malfoys actually were pretty integrated in the muggle society after they established themselves in Britain, specifically economically. Beginning with their connection to King George they started investing in muggle industries and gaining connections with the muggle elite. That's mainly how they amassed their wealth and power.
    The Malfoys actually opposed the statute of secresy, as they had made powerful connections with royalty and other high class wealthy muggles. They thought there was a difference between poor and rich muggles and didn't want to lose their economical and social influence they had over some of the most powerful muggles.
    But when they realized that the statute was going into effect and it had the support of most purebloods they quickly switched sides for the newly founded ministry of magic and cut all ties to muggles and denied ever having fraternised with them.
    Just some interesting backstory which shows just how ambitious and power hungry the Malfoys have always been.

    I read a fanfiction that also described the hatred of Muggleborns as a clash of ideals and traditions. The idea was that Muggleborns were raised with Muggle ideas and beliefs, and when they found something in the Wizarding World that they didn't like, they would try to change that. Take Hermione ans SPEW. She constantly tried to get people to join. Now slavery and racism is by no means right, but the position of house-elves was something deep rooted in wizarding culture. People will always try to protect their beliefs, and the idea is that purebloods deeply desired to protect Wizarding traditions.

The veracity of those claims is probably pretty inflated, but it's definitely interesting to see how what might have been a more legitimate reason thousands of years ago can be warped over time to become something more hateful.

    can you make a video about a scenario where voldemort found out harry was one of his horcrux? like, would he kidnap harry and imperius him to work for him so he wont be killed or will he sacrifice that one horcrux😂😂😂😂

      He could absorb the Horcrux back and be stronger. Then he could get rid of Harry except it appeared that when he took Harry's blood in the graveyard though he could touch Harry he was rendered incapable of killing him

    Thanks for making this! I've been thinking lately that the Malfoys are a uniquely British class of villain. They aren't just racists, they're elitist too. In 7 books, Draco never did anything to make him likable (not to say he wasn't sympathetic, at times he was, but that's not the same thing as truly liking someone). I'm sure this was intentional by JKR. Still, I'm frustrated because I feel like I've met some RL Malfoys and then I've got to explain to people "imagine the Malfoys NOT seen through the eyes of Harry Potter. They have virtues too." I can't get enough of them. Great video, Dean! ❤️

    Lucius Malfoy didn’t always choose his family first over serving Voldemort, he only made that choice in the end because he could see it was a lost cause if Harry hadn’t died when Voldemort made like the millionth attempt to kill him, and Voldemort had started to lose faith in Lucius because of how his plans had failed. But before then in “chamber of secrets” Lucius sent the diary of Tom riddle to the school without taking his own kid out of the school or doing anything to prepare him for the possible return of a dark lord or tell him how to defend himself from a giant basilisk snake or do anything to prepare him for dealing with the possible backlash of Draco getting accused of being the heir of Slytherin

    I know that the Malfoy's belief system was wrong but I can understand where they are coming from. Imagine if this was applied in the real world; if one race vilified, tortured and killed another just because they were different...oh...wait...
    In addition to that, imagine the oppressors being completely oblivious towards the damaged they caused or worse, indifferent towards it, simply ignoring it and brushing it aside, telling you and your people to simply "get over it" because it happened in the past; remorseless, they don't care enough to simply say "Sorry" or acknowledge the amount of damage they did and continue to do by perpetuating lies about your kind - that's essentially what muggles did.
    Muggles persecuted the magical community because they didn't understand them, they feared what was different, they feared what they didn't know. Muggles spent centuries going on witch-hunts, spreading propaganda that painted the entire wizarding community in a nasty light, capturing witches and wizards, torturing them and slaughtering them by the thousands and nearly wiping out their entire community. Persecution so great that the wizarding community was forced into hiding just to protect their own kind. Muggles in the modern world are completely aware of what their ancestors did to the wizarding community but a lot of them are indifferent because the idea of magic, of wizards and witches, are the stuff of myth and legend, reduced to mere childish fantasy...and that is kind of insulting when you think about it - would you like the horrors of your kind watered down to nothing but passing entertainment for those that harmed your kind in the first place?
    I still disagree with the Malfoy motto of blood purity but I think, if the wizarding community and the muggle community actually tried to work together, they might just be able to coexist. If they resolve all the bad blood (no pun intended) between them, acknowledge the atrocity committed (on both sides because the wizarding community did have it's fair share of rotten apples) and worked through that, then maybe they can heal and grow together. Maybe if that had happened earlier, the Malfoy bigotry (as well as bigotry that existed in other pure-blood families) wouldn't have survived as long as it did. Their hatred of muggles is a potent concoction of fear and ignorance - the same thing that drove muggles against witches and wizards in the first place. The Malfoy's are no better than those who came before them and despised their kind simply because they are different.
    Anyway, that's just my take on it.

    • @SolarBlyze
      @SolarBlyze 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I entirely agree. Also the Malfoys reasoning is likely the same that Slytherin had when the founders were making the school. If your kind was being hunted down, fearful for every day potentially being their last, would you really be willing to accept someone from that very same kind who had caused you so much harm? Someone of that kind who is now parading around like they are one of your own. At any moment the muggleborn could have turned on them and ratted out the school to muggles who would attack and tear it to pieces just as they had done with all the magical folk before.
      Slytherin just wanted to protect his people.
      It'd be like if the jews were trying to make a sanctuary for themselves, hidden away where they could practice their beliefs without fear, and suddenly nazi kids come waltzing in cause "oh we're jews now". Honestly it's no wonder the pureblood families that were around back then didn't trust muggles or muggleborn. They had never been given a reason to trust them. To them people like the Weasleys or heck the other 3 founders must have seemed like lunatics. "You're going to trust these people? Open our doors to them with no precautions? Are you mad?"
      Jumping back to the jew example. Imagine a nazi child being accepted and allowed into a private jewish school. Yes, they're kids, but never underestimate the potential danger a child poses.
      Still, that doesn't make what they're doing now right. Violence only leads to further violence. The cycle has to end at some point.

    I do find it pretty ironic that since armond was granted his lands and estates in payment for services rendered to William the conquer, who was presumably a muggle then everything the Malfoy's have they technically owe to a muggle who gave them a gift.

    • @proximashining776
      @proximashining776 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It wasn't a gift, it was a payment for a job he did for the king. When I get paid by my employer for doing my job, it's my rightful wage, not a gift, and I don't owe my employer anything for giving me the money I've earned by working for him. I wouldn't expect Armand Malfoy to work for free either.

    • @simonorourke4465
      @simonorourke4465 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@proximashining776 To be fair though we arnt talking about a modern worker employer relationship, we are talking about a medievil king of England William the Conquer to be specific. Malfoy probably didn't work for the king in any official sense, he was more likely a useful courtier who performed certain services for the king. Historically it is more likely that he wouldn't expect any particular reward for his service, just an idea that helping out the king would bring favour and the chance of advancement. The land given to him would be a gift in the sense that it belonged to the king and he chose to reward him by giving it to him.
      The modern idea of the way these relations work doesn't apply to so long ago. After all we are talking about an absolute monarch whose people fully believed he had been personally chosen by God to be there king. People even useful influential courtiers didn't make demands of such a man, they would help him out knowing that they may eventually get some reward but not necessarily know what that reward would be.

    I find it almost comical that Lucius Malfoy, someone who was devoted to expounding and pushing blood purity on the wizarding world, would indenture himself to halfblood son of a muggle father. All Lucius cared about was Riddle's rhetoric about keeping blood purity in all magic families.
    It is also ironic that the Malfoys were ignorant of magical history. They did not know that the Potters lineage, goes back even before the Malfoys came to England, and before the rift between magicals and muggles began.

    You omitted the fact that the Malfoys were hobnobbing with Muggle royalty and aristocracy when the International Statute of Secrecy was first proposed. They were originally against the Statute, fearing a loss of the prestige they'd gained as the court wizards to the King of England, but once they saw the Statute's passage was inevitable, the Malfoys did a total 180, claiming they had never associated with muggles or opposed the Statute. They knew which way the wind was blowing, so they maneuvered to be within the new circles of power.
    It seems that until that point, the Malfoys weren't so much against muggles as they were against the unwashed masses of lowborn peasants. They had been perfectly fine mingling with muggles as long as they were wealthy and powerful bluebloods.

      Armand Malfoy was mention on Pottermore as being the progenitor of the Malfoy line, a Frech wizard who came to Britain with William the Conqueror and received land from him (for his services, that were likely of magical kind), on which he founded Malfoy Manor. The reason why Armand left France was not stated, and is merely a speculation of the author of this video. It does not seem completely unlikely though, that Armand really might have had some bad experience with Muggles in France, since it's known that wizards and Muggles had problematic relationships for centuries.
      But my personal opinion is that Armand Malfoy joined William the Conqueror for the same reason all other William's (Muggle) supporters did - because he promised them money and land in England.

    Ok, so apparently in an early draft of the first Harry Potter book, Hermione's parents were supposed to have a prominent roll, as they were going to take Harry in. Mr. Granger had witnessed what Voldemort had done, as was to raise him, with his wife, and Hermione in secret. The idea was scrapped and changed to Harry being raised by his abusing Aunt and Uncle. I kinda would have liked to see the first draft version though.

    I haven't checked Pottermore enough to be that familiar with some of the background stories. It was definitely interesting to hear the Malfoy line came from France originally. Yes, it's understandable how someone feeling that they are a victimized minority could come to hating & adamantly avoiding those he felt responsible for hurting his kind.
    It's just too bad that attitude didn't change by Lucius' generation, with human societies becoming (mostly) understanding that people that are different doesn't necessarily mean they are bad or evil. But even when Draco & Harry are grown & their sons become friends, it's still understandable that the Ministry would keep established laws of secrecy, since human instinct is still to fear the unknown, especially those with a lot of power because history has shown that some with power greatly abuse it, & many people would rightly fear a wizard or group of wizards abusing their power (Grindlewald & Voldemort being examples). So it's like a "catch-22". Wizards can't come out to the muggles & prove their intent to police themselves & not interfere or try to dominate muggles. So muggles would keep on fearing magical power, giving some wizards an excuse to view muggles as still being the violent ones that would want wizards gone. Thus some wizard families, knowing the history of persecution of magical people, feel justified in their prejudice against muggles.

    • @proximashining776
      @proximashining776 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. All old wizarding families had experience with Muggle violence in the past, the Malfoys aren't an exception. Incidents like witch burning or killing of young magical children were the reason why the Statute of Secrecy was passed and why wizards and witches hid their existence from the Muggle world.
      The sad story of Dumbledore's sister Ariana is a proof that Muggle attacks aren't just a thing of the Middle Ages. She was attacked by Muggles who saw her performing accidental magic (she was a small child and thus unable to protect herself magically), and she never recovered from that attack.
