First off, this an amazing video. I enjoy your content and as a coach myself consider your channel an excellent source of information and resource. I do not disagree with anything covered in this video. The mental stress you talk about at high performance levels is often brought in by metaboreflex. A result of weak breathing muscles requiring more blood flow stealing blood from the from the arms and legs to preserve life. The brain sees the lack of blood to the breathing muscles as a threat to survival. Resulting in perceived exhaustion, an intense but fleeting feeling of fatigue while exercising. A heaviness in the arms and legs and fatigue that seems to feel more psychological (heart, willpower, motivation or focus) than physical but is in fact purely physical. The problem is that most people focus on improving cardio endurance. Cardio is for the strength of the heart which pumps oxygen… the fuel every cell in the body needs to function optimally. Breathing muscle can and should be trained separately from strength training. The solution is to restore a mechanical sound and anatomically congruous breathing pattern. Once mechanics are addressed then exercises specific to improving the endurance of breathing muscles can be added. I can not stress this enough… restoring mechanics is primary. Any breathing exercises endeavored into without this step will reinforce breathing dysfunction. A lower body, 360*, horizontal diaphragmatic breath is the goal. The rewards of achievement are multiple and effect every aspect of health, psychologically, emotional state, posture, performance, bracing, endurance… I could go on but hopefully I’ve outlined the importance of breathing as related to endurance.
Hey Garage Strength, I play soccer and in application most athletes recommend to do the John Terry treadmill workout. It incorporates a 12% sprint at 11.2mph, 20s on and 40s off for rest for a 15 sets. Many people say it brings a lot of speed and speed endurance gains but man is it tough. What are you're thoughts on that?
Jerry Rice had amazing speed endurance. As did sweetness. Beauden Barrett of the all blacks has some of the best in the world today. Everyone thinks he’s crazy fast. I think he’s very fast but more importantly by far has the best speed endurance which allows him to beat or catch opponents. I had the opportunity to train with the Canadian rugby 7s team many years ago. All they did was speed endurance. Tempo 150 metres with about 1:30-2:00 minute break x 16 sprints!
Where can I learn more about impulse training? Also is impulse training working on both upper body and lower body or is it just working on your lower body?
one im doing is 30 rounds in 30min on a sled, 25ish seconds on. Im adding weight 5kg every 3weeks or so. When I hit a limit, Ill switch to 1/2 the weight and see how quickly I can do the 30 rounds, grinding the time down
