Great logic leads you right to the problem. I've seen you think your way directly to the problem a hundred times. This is what makes a great mechanic. Few have this depth of understanding. Thanks for a great video, Warren!
I really like seeing this old equipment get going again. When you get something like this up and running again you get a real sense of satisfaction. Nice one Warren
It’s amazing how versatile you are in equipment repair. Not many shops around that will work on such broad scope of equipment. You are keeping equipment in the smaller/more remote towns running.
I loved the old D8K and D8H series. Big enough to move a decent amount of material, Didn't kill you when working on them. D9H and K, you needed your crane for everything. Love the old iron!
Thanks for the video. Have been looking for a solution for my Case 450, I had suspected it was the charge pump and you confirmed it. Keep up the great work and I really appreciate your explaining the steps to a sucessful diagnosis. Keep the great content coming!
While I have absolutely no experience in tracked equipment repair, I can recognize a good old skool mechanic when I see one, and your a good one. You have that logical, linear thought process that eventually leads you to the problem. This is experience that takes years to learn and is priceless. In my industry (towing and recovery) the old guys can still get the job done regardless while some of the younger people may be able to drag cable a little faster, if you force them to operate with anything but a new 1.2 million dollar rotator they are at a loss. Give me an old Holes 850, some snatch blocks and it's coming out. It's just a matter of matter of your approach. I'd trade a good mechanic for a parts changer any day. Great video
Great videos. I used to have two D8 H dozers. Great machines and I could fix them myself. The new dozers don't show me much at all. Plus those of us in the field can't repair them unless we are computer savvy. I would rather pull a lever and know it will work ,rather then push a button and hope it works.
Great ol cat! Who ever did the hard surfacing was an artist with a welder. I painted a D8H when I was a kid I had the blade up all the way painting underneath the blade it had a big pivot handle to raise the blade not thinking I kicked the lever over to paint under the lever and the blade dropped like a stone from the top and cut my air hose off to my paint gun almost shit myself lol.
I troubleshoot stuff just like you do. I think I got that technique from watching hours of your videos. I just got hired at a John Deere dealer. So I'll go to a John Deere tech school after I graduate high school and then i have a guaranteed job at that dealer I'm going to now. I hope I keep that technique
this was the very first video i watched and this is what got me hooked to follow you Warren. well it popped up and i watched it again..... then there was a orange road grader you put a clutch in it on the side of the road. been following you ever since.
Brings back memories....I worked on D7's a lot in the military. We just got our first hydraulic crane service truck today - first thing I noticed I don't like is the swing is so fast it will turn a lot of stuff we lift into a wrecking ball swinging around if it can't be slowed down.

Great videos Warren, I enjoyed pt1 & 2, I respect you very much for your work. I do field service and your work ethic is second to none, get on it and get’er done!

Crazy how minimum work and it runs. Our brand new d6 dozer that's a year old didn't want to start this summer after sitting over winter. Can't beat the old stuff. But old stuff is way harder and different to use. All them Mechanical levers instead of electric . Great video by the way
Warren funny stories , a big contractor here in Bakersfield , had a company I do independent work for bring out 6 scrappers all cat think 637 Older but good machines , he told them get your old shit off my job he rented all new from Cat and all broke down, then he called back to company I do work for but was told no they all rented to another contractor that was tired of broke down new equipment lol it was priceless.
Very interesting project. Certainly no place to plug in the computer in on this one. I want to see you get her moving again and earning her keep for her owner. Hope your doing well too Warren
Hello, You are a good old boy, for sure. I have assisted many a mechanic doing what you do on these videos.I ran heavy equipment for 40 years, I have been retired for ten years now and listening to your Cat talk is like tonic on sick nerves. How can I do something for so long and not feel displaced? After watching you replace the Trans filters and stuff and asking yourself why don't these people replace these filters and then believe that these old tractors had failed components? I have seen this many times and it is a lack of money. I began a career in south Texas and ended up working way up in, in Detroit , Michigan. So. Up north with organized labor came organized maintenance. Simply put- Oilers. These so called oilers sole purpose was to keep detailed and documented records like this trans filter change on all company machinery. Track chains, whatever. 10,000 Hrs. ? IT is time. Install new tracks. The pay was far higher than anything I ever experienced in Texas too. Good field mechanics like yourself are in extremely high demand with in the larger companies that do a lot of auto plant work or infrastructure rebuild. You are no kid, navy man. However I am an old timer and I think you are wasting your invaluable time working on this old equipment. This old stuff is good stuff I know, I am extremely familiar with it. However, you need to join the union local here the- Local 324. Merely call them and I think they will place you immediately through the union dispatch office. Really. You have all the tools, truck and know how. They will in turn give you a 401k, besides a true pension too, yep , and more insurances than you will ever use. Take it from me. If you can endure cold sometimes, come ahead. It is worth it. One time I remember about 6 or 8 years before I retired a kid asked , " You sure are good at all this machinery. Did you go to a school or something? " " Yes." I graduated from the school of hard knocks." A bunch of guys laughed their asses off. I ran a Scraper for thirteen years. Good luck.
First time viewer.Be careful around that stuff when they have been setting for awhile. In 1977/78 friend of mine got killed trying to jump start a D8.It was a military model I think a D8K. Friend drove another dozer along side the dead unit.Battery boxes facing each other.Dead dozer brake pedals had the little park holders set machine should not have moved. He was on the ground between the machines dead dozer's engine started machine pivoted crushed friend between the machines.Again be careful and make some more vids. You know what you are doing.
Hi warren the torque divider has torque converter in there as well as planetary unit which helps it generate more torque if it is still spining at the drive shaft and no movement your trans iis in neutral or clutch pack problemor lack of pressure my d8 destroyed trans pump replaced and went ok
That’s almost the exact same story about mouth cancer with my uncle. He smoked instead of chewed. Got mouth cancer at 42 got it treated and 8 years later it came back. He had his jaw and tongue removed and couldn’t talk. The cancer ended up swelling his throat and he choked to death at 52 years old. My uncle is the reason I’m a heavy equipment mechanic
Well Warren, I have seen this on older model cats and similar machines using the type pump it is. The parts will break your back packing them to them.where I got my time on them was working for Peter Quett and he had a hundred mechanics working who all had different levels of time in the field.. so you found parts welded that should of been through away and then the excuses would drag you down
D342 engine, the ultimate evolution of that series which was a dependable old workhorse but came to the end of its development. 1600ci roughly I believe. The next series L used the 3408
Great video, very interesting stuff. If that machine was made in China it would still be like new and under a year old! ha ha ha ha ha ha thankfully some old stuff is so well made it still performs 25yrs down the line!
You as a channel made my day. I run service truck for an outfit in Michigan, sadly not much old iron left. But I have the same IMT body on a Kenworth t300 chassis and that crane motherfucks me all the time! Happy to see what it looks like with a functional outrigger, mine is rusted tight. First video, subscribed and will follow as time allows. What's your truck got for power/trans? Love the old Freightliner steering wheel, was comfy and fit the hand good. Dad had 2 of them, first vehicle I drove besides tractor, miss seeing them when they were like a plague on the highway. Anyway you got my vote. Give er hell and take er easy.
Good work, great video...but I wouldn't take a D8K Cat if you gave it to me...the D7G was the money-maker to have, and with cab and AC, you could make LOTS of money with comfort! (and, you didn't need permits to move it from site A to site B, either...D7G was under 102" wide!!!)
Mr JPaydirt said watch your video, n I'm glad he did. So much I liked, but had me laughing pretty good with, there's always that 1asshole Mr $ bags, Haha, thanx, I'll b watching from now on, ;-)

Did ya get her? I know a bunch of guys up here in Coastal BC work heavy marine diesel. You all would get along great. Damn near same accents too. Thanks for the video.
Good morning Warren. Been busy as hell i reckon you have been to. Finally starting to catch up on some of your videos. How's the new service truck working out. Do you like it and have you had any issues with it and all. Does that 12 valve have plenty of power to toat her around now that you have her all loaded down and is your fuel mileage still as good as you were hoping. I recall you qere pretty impressed when you drove it home on the fuel mileage it got. Glad to see you are keeping busy and thanks for the videos. Take care
Service truck has been great so far. Only problem I had was a air govenor on the compressor went out, other than that nothing. I am burning less fuel per week than I was in the 550. We definitely see it on our fuel bill. So far I'm really happy.
@@westerntruckandtractorrepa1353 that's good to hear. Glad she's working out good for you. I sure like seeing it in the videos. Them nice aluminum wheels still look purty good to.
the first dozer that i ever ran for a 1970's D6D open cab and raining, the first loader i ran was a 1973 cat 930 both machines ran as good as the newer machines just the pins were a bit more worn out. and about 400% louder.
I like Caterpillars own batteries. They have strange outer messure, but good effect and last long. Use them once on European truck. New higher battery box I must make and pay little more than ordinary batteries, but they last more than about 4 times longer than normal mark batteries.
Thought wouldn’t it be trick if the crane control were wireless! Second thought was good thing it has a cord. I would set the cordless control down and forget where it was. At least with a cord I could start at the crane and follow the cord to the control!
this is my first video of yours i watched and in the beginning you were talking about 'paper work' taking many months, years to get passed or approved?..could you please explain that for me? thanks..
When signing up a new piece of equipment up for fire duty with the forest service or Cdf it can take months or years to get the red tape done. There is also a long waiting list because it's good money, so everyone who owns equipment tries to get on the job.
Lmfao, tweekers... I thought us southerners only said that! 🤣🤣. Im a new subscriber and wanted to know, if you ever work on equipment at marijuana Farms since they seem to big out in California
