    Based off experience caster general at the beginning with Master of Maneuver 1 and Scorching Ray and upgrading cure light wounds is the way to go. Delete ranged units with your spell and heal your units so you dont lose any troops.

      In my next run I wanted to try out the caster general. It does seem like the most fun of the choices.

      Fireball on general also do wonders, but cure wounds is way too good. Pair it with clerics and you never lose units.

    One thing you didn't mention is that the blue bar to the right of your general's portrait is the remaining space in the infirmary. If your general has Cure it costs energy, but it can be used several times if needed. By keeping an eye on infirmary space you'll know when you need to use Cure and when you can save it while still not losing any units at the end of the battle.

    I'm not huge on hellknights after around the level 7 of your army. Don't know if it's just me but I've seen a stack of 150 go into dust far too quickly and eating up all my hospital space while having mongrels and zombies go ahead a bit and take the brunt of damage w/ skele support + skele/mongrel/marksmen archer units raining hell being very consistent for act 3 so far. There are times where they'll try to attack the archers but having the generic skeleton units as a midline seems to curb any problems from that front.

    This is my recommendations, after completing the game on multiple playthroughs.
    Best Footmen = Champions
    Best Archers = Marksmen
    Best Scouts = Hedge Knights
    Best Mages = Assassins
    Best Veterans = Dragon Slayers
    These all have the highest amount of damage for their respective unit types, with Dragon Slayers being able to deal around 160 damage per unit in the stack!

      I presume you can't upgrade anything until chapter 3. I'm on my first run through, and I'm still in chapter 2, so I haven't even seen the Mythic Units or upgrades yet. Just unlocked the hellknights.

    • @Nyrufa
      @Nyrufa 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RedwoodTheElf That's correct. Although since I wrote that, I've also found Spearmen are an effective second pick for Footmen upgrade. I highly recommend that you complete Greybor's dragon hunting quest BEFORE you form a military council, otherwise he won't be part of it. Greybor is the one who recommends the Spearmen, Hedgeknights, Assassins and Dragon Slayer upgrades.

    What are the controllers bindings during a crusade combat? As in checking enemy unit details. Accidentally skipped a turn once and auto fought in another (lucky it was an easy battle).
    Had a tough fight against the first undead because I didn't know they innervate my troops. Would have blitzed them if I knew attrition was their specialty.

    Honestly, I feel like the devs should take a few lessons from Age of Wonders 3 / Planetfall if they ever decide to use this kind of system again on how to make a more balanced strategy mini-game. It's undoubtedly unfair to nuke enemies every round with spells like scorching ray on the first turn, and there's no way to counter or defend against it if the enemy goes first to use a spell.

    • @jozan1313
      @jozan1313 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      there are certainly ways to play around it. High initiative units to go first, you can split unit stacks to limit how many can be killed in a single attack or even remove units from the army that are too squishy to survive. After clearing act 5 army combat, there was only a couple of generals that had this issue, the big one being an early encounter in act 3 that does lightning strike, but by removing all units apart form hell knights the encounter was a breeze with no loses, or just not fight that encounter for awhile as there is no penalty to just waiting, on top of that if you level general and get cure spells you kind of just win combat. I mean, its not a polished system like heroes of might and magic (i havn't played age of wonders or planetfall) but it is a side gimmick, a more interactive form of 'kingdom building' and for what they did i thought it worked pretty well and apparently i was doing this with 'broken' Lich system that got no units.

    • @SpartanWolf222
      @SpartanWolf222 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jozan1313 For what is essentially a low-budget-styled King's Bounty mini-game, it's great, but I would love for them to flesh it out more like I suggested. I suggested the Age of Wonders series because it already did a lot of the tinkering for Owlcat with balancing all types of diverse armies and countering damage types based on said army type. Plus, they could just borrow a couple ideas like "all sides cannot use spells on round 1" and "smaller energy amounts during battle that is separate from the main energy bar." They could also implement the siege battles to make those encounters more "epic" than just a lot of units. Things like siege equipment for destroying walls and gates, walls for bonuses to ranged units, etc.
      Right now, the current system favors getting a mage and nuking the other side because you will hardly run out of energy after a couple level-ups, and there are few reasons not to go on the offense at all times.

    • @jozan1313
      @jozan1313 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@SpartanWolf222 i see you point, but i think that leads into an issue of increasing depth to a side system that realistically is only a small amount of the main game. After all i think there was a decent amount of people who hated kingdom management from kingmaker (at least from what i have heard from people) and i could see this system as not everyone type of thing, when they came for the pathfinder system. I think it could be interested if the system was more fleshed out, but at the same time, i get why it isn't :) it's enough of a taste and side job, without being too complicated or time consuming

    Marksmen are the most powerful RANGED units, but the Assassins (upgraded casters) deal over 40 damage in melee, and can teleport across the map. Shame they're just as squishy as Marksmen though.

      My most successful army had two large (200+) stacks of Marksmen, one batch of Hellknights (180-ish), one of Assassins (60), Movanic Devas (100), Sorcerers and one Hedge Knights. With my caster general they tore through pretty much anything.

    i love the crusade battles, probably cus i love heros of might and magic too, also imo magic caster generals are extremely good too, at some point you can get fire storm unlocked for them and there is also a feat that lets you cast twice per round so you can pretty much delete any army before they can even attack you

  • @MrJeffreyrichards

    Marksmen ,hellknights, corsairs ,hedge knights all high damage fast movement horses and high ac I went mage on my general for cure and scorching ray you only need 4 units in your army from what I can I just wish the wizards and sorcerers did more with the magic they get I cant really say about wizards though as I currently only have like 7. getting the power increase spellforce 2 times means you wipe out any unit that is not immune to fire just like the marksmen and can heal about 8k damage I never lost a unit at all once I got cure wounds and clerics would be better if they could heal more then one time like 1 time for every 50.
    Duelests are tanky thats it mid damage useless on anything with DR Inquistors come with divine favor and can hit really hard on chaotic.

    Thanks for the vid, but why is it that every vid i find starts as if you already know about stuff. Theer doesn't seem to be a step by step total beginners guide *anywhere*! (could be a good one to do then, eh?) - I literally have no idea about the interface, let alone strategy. I've no idea how this aspect interacts with my party, or even how to get back to them or how time is passing with each aspect - like, we need a total 'ok, so let's start by explaning the interface, objectives, and how this affects the game', then going into tactics and strategy after that. Anyone know of a complete starter guide out there (vid or written)??

      The larger your stack of units are the more damage they will do. There are other things that can contribute but that is the main one. Some of the enemy units in act 2 also have alot of defense (like gargoyles) so they take a long time to kill. As long as you can win the fight without permanently losing units though your on the right track.

    • @XoRandomGuyoX

      One helpful tip at the start is to talk to Irabeth in camp before leaving and give her the 7,000 gold requested to recruit units for you.
      As for dealing damage, it's based on the number of units in your stack. As units die your offense power drops as well. This is why the video states that the best defense is a good offense: killing the enemy first drops the power of their counterattack.

    • @haakonsteinsvaag
      @haakonsteinsvaag 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@odessaDarc If you or anybody else are struggling here is a few tips. First priority is getting a caster general with Masters of maneuver. That increases the number of different units you can have in your army.
      second, as soon as possible, get the cure spell. That combined with the healer unit will result in you not loosing troops at all. Some may die during the battle, but you will get them back after the battle.
      When in battle keep an eye on the infirmary bar right next to the portrait of the general. If that bar getts full you will loose troops after the battle, so you might have to save energy (blue bar) for cure spells.
      Now, for the general strategy: Archers are your Most Valuable Unit and will do the majority of the killing, so protect them at all cost. Put melee units around them if you have to, but the decoy tactic shown in the video seem to work very well to.
      Use archers and spells to kill enemy units, and Cure spell and clerics to keep your units alive.
      Last but not the least keep an eye on The number next to your army and enemy armies on the map. This tells you how powerful the army is. So start attacking the smaller armies and save the larger armies for later when your power level is on the same level or maybe one level below the army you are attacking.
