Drunk Chickens ! Actually... the Cedar Waxwings fly here (So-California) for winter to eat our various berries. They are not particular when it comes to over ripe snacks. Occasionally, you'll find an inebriated bird... flapping on the ground under the shrub. They sober up faster than humans. You made me think of that. Thanks for the follow up Step 2 on Vinegar making. I was about to toss a dozen apples... and decided to give it a try. Thanks Rach! you're the best.

    I'm wondering
Once it's in a vinegar form do you have to refrigerate, or do I you store in the Cubard with a sealing lid ??

In my experience, it took one month after this point, to get to sweet vinegar and another month for proper vinegar.

I strained mine today. It was slimy and thick. Is this bad? I assume this is from natural pectin. It smells like vinegar. Should I leave it and then add water later to thin it?

I'm straining on Friday- mine is not cloudy like yours yet. I had a lot of bubble over, so I added an air lock. Wondering if that is hindering the ferment at all.

I bought a gallon of Wal-Mart brand of apple cider vinegar, after I got home I noticed that there is no mother!! I have about a quarter cup of a ACV, mostly the mother from another jar. If I put that in the nonmother will the gallon now be a real ACV with the mother? Sorry if this confusing!!

I couldn't find your part 3. Did you end up doing a part 3 to this? I just tested mine that I poured off and it tastes like vinegar. However, I never had a mother. I did end up with a layer of sediment in the bottom but when I reached in for it, no mother. 😕 Looking for why I didn't and the best way to store the finished vinegar.

I tried making some about a month, or so, ago from some imperfect apples that had no other use. All I got was lots of fruit-fly nasties so I threw it away. I'll have to get one of those "pickle pebbles" (is that what you called them?) and see if they help.

  • @davidkehr4730

Apple cider vinegar is ,by definition, made from apple cider, not apple pieces. This would be apple vinegar, but not ASV.

Is it a regional thing? Sieve is pronounced "siv" not "seev" (www.thefreedictionary.com/sieve ).
I've heard this a couple of time on TH-cam now and can't understand why it's mis-pronounced.
