Being in my 70’s, I discovered this band for myself only a couple of years ago here on TH-cam. An incredible talent. Huge respect for skills and creativity. Love the melodic line of this song
This comment makes me surprisingly happy. I got early retirement, so a lot of my spare time is band + wikipedia and searching for bands that influenced bands I already like. Well done humanity - the internet is a wonderful thing (in some ways). I'd never have discovered Can, Townes Van Zandt or Fela Kuti otherwise. In my day it was poring over music magazines or (even better) fanzines.
@@wulfgold ah…you like Van Zandt. Have you heard Robert Plant’s cover of his song “Nothin’” on Plant’s and Alison Krauss’ album Raising Sand? I think Plant does a very evocative version. Haven’t heard of the other two you mentioned.

I think Plant's voice has gotten better with age, can't stand Led Zeppelin due to the vocals and whilst I've warmed to him of late, Kraus Steals the show for me. IF I remember correctly he covers a band called Low on that who are lovely - Mormons, which is a bit whacky for me - UK, we don't really have them here, but their music's great, early work is incredibly delicate/minimalist, with some truly beautiful singing. "Secret Name" is the first album of theirs I heard, still has a very special place in my heart.
Take into consideration that this is early Radiohead, which is why the song has a more basic structure. Their first 2 albuns are "Pablo Honey" and "The Bends", which are pretty good albuns, but from a time where Radiohead's sound still fell under the "Brit-Rock" genre. Then, they began becoming a lot more experimental with "Ok Computer", which was a not only a critical acclaimed album, but also served as the transition by fusing their "Brit-Rock" roots and their new experimental vein. After that came "Kid A" and "Amnesiac" where they fully embraced their new genre defying sound with lots of experimentalism, fusion, but also consistency. That's a little bit of carries more into modern Radiohead, a band that's not bound to a style or genre, but that's quickly and easily identifiable by those who are familar with their music.
I am almost 60 and I wish I could say I have been listening to RH since they came out. I am late to the party myself. I actually won 2 concert tickets to see RH in Kansas City about six years ago. I had only heard Karma Police and Creep. RH got zero radio play in my part of Kansas. I was blown away by Thom's voice. Once I really figured out streaming I went off the deep end listening to them. So when you said you didn't know where you have been for the past few decades, I can totally relate. Please listen to more of them, you will not be sorry. Also, all of their solo work is great as well. Wall Of Eyes is fantastic. Thank you for the content.
I bought Pablo Honey.... it was just good enough to make me want and look forward to The Bends.... I bought The Bends on day of release and the very second Fake Plastic Trees finished I knew this wasn't just a decent band, this was a very, very special band, a generational band. Its been 30 years now and they are still incredibly creative, they never sit on their hands, always pushing forward, never repeating and never living on their past.
Pretty much can’t go wrong with Radiohead or solo Thom Yorke. Unbelievable creativity. I was lucky enough to get to tell him that every time they have a new album I can get about 3 songs in and then I have to go work on a song. Inspirational!!!
Excellent reaction Erol. "Fake Plastic Trees" is probably my favourite Radiohead song. Check out Portishead when you can - "Glory Box", "Roads" or "Wandering Star" by them are all great to start with. Cheers.
I'd add/suggest "S.O.S.", I'm not generally a fan of covers, but that's really stunning. Third's a masterpiece*. * Yeah, I know S.O.S. isn't from Third, but it's close enough in time ;)
Radiohead always pays good young directors to make their videos another one that's just brutal is No Surprises simple but brilliant and in my opinion one of the best music videos ever made and a great song as well just a brutal beautiful lullaby about despair.
I came of age with this song in the 90s and this has been my favorite song my entire adult life. I got to see them perform it live and it is a treasured memory. Great song.

"He used to do surgery for girls in the 80's, but gravity always wins" is just SUCH an evocative and yet straightforward lyric that attaches to the meter so beautifully. This and Subterranean Homesick Alien were the two songs that once I heard them, I understood 'what Radiohead is' and I knew they were destined to be one of my favorite bands, alongside the likes of Pink Floyd and later, Muse.
Another great Radiohead track from the same album is "Street Spirit (Fade Out)". "High and Dry" is good as well. Anyway, great reaction! I hope you keep going down the Radiohead rabbit hole.

For me it's that Amaj7 chord at the end - something about that G# gives it a real vulnerability and sadness that just kills me. Also, if you haven't done so already, check it out live. The climax is even more powerful, if anything, and the way the band cuts out halfway through Thom singing 'it wears me out' is one of my favourite moments in music. There's a live version of Thom and Jonny promoting their tour in Japan in 1995. They do a spine tingling acoustic version of Street Spirit (Fade out).
