    Voightlander 0.95 lenses man. Sharp enough wide open, buttery smooth focus, 3d pop, and colors that make a grown man wet the bed. The 17.5mm was glued to my gh2 and g7 99% of 7 years.

    When working with super shallow depth of field you have to remember that the focus plane is a curve, not a straight line. If you want to use a tree to the side to get focus point your camera at the tree, get focus, then point it beside the tree where you're going to be standing.

    When I was completely new to camera aperture terminology, and knew nothing about bokeh or depth of field, I stumbled on your channel. The term toneh confused the hell out of me. I googled it and realized about the Northrop connection.

      it widely used terminology around the globe, i was once in a small camera store shop in Saudia arabia, and a very youngish teenager boy was asking the clerk if he got any of the chinese cheap lens for the l mount with big toneh! that's when i know it's not just a word for us Kasey's hobos

    That was great entertainment and classic CC stuff! As for the lens, it's pretty sh*t, right? That ghosting was an incredible feat of optical engineering! The colour shift was just bizarre! If it's any consolation, when you did the ultra close-up at the end, the mic foam seemed to be reasonably in focus! 😂

  • @DavidPalmer_blinder
    @DavidPalmer_blinder ปีที่แล้ว +4

    i got the OG when it first came out, and i hated it at first. everything i shot looked like trash. then i learned it's like a musical instrument. it just takes practice. a huge amount of practice. i still shoot with it in that it's my "throw in the bag and go out and shoot" camera because getting a better sensor than that Fairchild is a tall order, and with all that practice your shots will get better. Also check out the Lumix 12-35mm, it has stabilization and works really well with the super 16mm sensor size. Put a black mist filter on with a variable ND and you are pretty well good to go with the OG in any setting.

    • @DavidPalmer_blinder
      @DavidPalmer_blinder ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Ocean Perpetual mostly keeping the tiny little body stable. That tiny sensor just amplifies movement (the crop factor). getting a stabilized lens does help greatly, but just being aware of your own movements goes a long way. The OG is also a great camera to fly on a gimbal. But just getting comfortable with dealing with the crop factor and composition, being further away than you might typically be. In terms of exposure it's tricky too because you do get 12 bits to play with, so I generally tend to go with a bit underexposed so i can push the highlights around (which that's the thing you really need to get used to, the Fairchild sensor on this camera has a roll off quality that makes it so buttery and smooth so you just have to get accustomed to not exposing to the right)

    1:07 - NOOOOOOOOOoooooo, do NOT power accessories from the same source as the camera! There is no voltage spike protection on BMPC, you won't get a 2nd chance (yes it might be fine for a long time, but it takes only ONE spike to brick it!) - my beloved camera is DEAD because of it.

    I got rid of my 7Artisans lens because it had that really wild curvature where there's like a big bubble of what's in focus. Most of what's in the middle is in focus but nothing else in the same like... Distance is because curvature of the lens. If it was close I wouldn't have returned it, it was wild how far things were from the focus in the middle.
    It looks just like that happened in a lot of these shots.

    It's actually "popping" when there is little blur. The ability to 3D discriminate (particularly when the localized tonal contrast isn't very broad, say from the 40% to 60% printer when view in print terms) when the viewed area is actually all in focus. Such lenses exist.And you answered your own question...."it's cheap" at f0.95 and 10K g...the goal is selling "baity" gear, not making "the cinema"

    • @editingsecrets
      @editingsecrets ปีที่แล้ว

      "say from the 40% to 60% printer when view in print terms" Could you explain this please?

    • @jamesoliver6625
      @jamesoliver6625 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@editingsecrets In print, shading is only achieved in inks buy printing 100% of the ink in a lesser percentage of the area. Inks only print all or nothing. If you do this on a fine screening of the 100% area this is the "halftone-ing" process. ALL ink printers print this way with the exception of gravure. In offset lithography (my career) it is done on screening densities of 133 lines per inch (US common for job printing) to 300 lpi. In a perfect world a shade of 50% printer under a magnifier would be a perfect checkerboard of ink and blank paper. As you shade to 40% printer and beyond you haver ink dots on a blank background, to 60% and beyond the background is solid ink and the voids in the background blank paper. Creating fine subtleties in the 40-60% regions (especially in the four-color process (Black Cyan Magenta, and Yellow) to simulate full color in high end print requires knowing where within the process your distortions are going to occur. It's easy to be "OK", very hard to be spot on and in some cases the shortcomings of the CMYK color space makes it impossible. Because of this, since I had roughly 35 years thinking in these terms, when evaluating my lenses, it's by evaluating their ability to hold those subtle gradations at least to screen and that screen needs to be like a ViewSonic VP2785-4K to work in ProPhoto for the most truth in what you are seeing, looking at things channel by channel to evaluate. It surprised me just how obvious the differences in lenses were when compared that way. Or, you could do like I do on a lot of stuff and just use the smallest lens I have for the task and don't pay any attention to the chaos. But if it's something I want to print, I spend the time.

    lol... ohhh you poor poor m43 loser.. ; ) i always look forward to your videos,, you always keep things fun.., f .95 .... sounds fast until you realize its f 2.7 ff... hahaha,, those m43 tricksters..,
    im surprised you went with this lens.. why not use some 16mm lenses... get a C mount or PL mount adapter.. i still have my Rex 4 Bolex from college days.., would be fun to get one of these BMPCCs and slap a Kern Switar lens on there.. , i remember when the OG BM came out,, i wanted it so bad..,, now that i could get one for like $500,, im like, 'eh' ... my Z Cam S6 is a dream camera.. that tech would have cost me like $40,000 in 2011.. cameras are the one technology im grateful for.. I've considered the Meike S35 lenses.. solid looking build quality.. im just not crazy about modern lenses,, & im just on a Contax Zeiss kick for now.., eventually id like a couple Meike or DZO cine primes, finally got my Sony ZV-E1 last week.. (so i can do lil casual stuff with good autofocus.., Adorama sent me a used camera! no bs.. i sent it back for exchange... smh,

    this hurts seeing you use a tripod. I almost unsubbed. But I have a CC t shirt that has, through many washes, stopped down to toneh 0 and I will stay subbed.
    EDIT. Stopped up. I should be banned for not saying it right.

    I've been watching you older long hair vids. You know, the ones where you sound like an American skater kid. Was that on purpose?

    I kinda hope you got a bad copy of the lens. Mushy and soft wide open, horrific color shift from 0.95 to 2.8 and what I saw in the 2.8 footage was the worst color noise artifacts I've ever seen on digital footage. (in the tree bark) I'm unsure if that's the camera or this lens, but you're definitely pushing the OG BM pocket well beyond its capabilities.

      I have no idea what happened in that shot lol. I've pushed shadows a lot harder and they never fell apart like that. Also I think the colour shift is BMPCC OG's fault. It's happened on a few lenses.
