  • David Crosby If I Could Only Remember My Name had been featured on the channel twice before, and today I talk about the new Analogue Productions Atlantic 75 in comparison to the Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab SuperVinyl 45 from a few years back. Both 45, both AAA from the master tape. The Mofi was cut by Krieg Wunderlich and the AP is a new cut done by Bernie Grundman. Apparently the Classic Records 45 plates were not used for reasons unknown.
    This time I am evaluating on my new system, which you can view here in the System Update video: • System Update! Featuri...

    Hi Scott. I don't own ANY copies of this, but it's been on my radar for a while. But now I'll get the A-75 version without hesitation. I thoroughly enjoy your channel and all your reviews and commentary. I'll be "like" number 13. We need to get you more viewers....You're one of the finest reviewers out there, in my opinion. This was my first taste of a 45 RPM vinyl and I must say it’s amazing. A very big acoustic sound with guitars and vocals that wash over you. Your description was spot on. I felt like i was in Laurel Canyon hearing it performed for the first time. Thanks Scott

    Woot!!! I can't wait! I love this music.
    I have the MoFi 2x45 which I think sounds great. I ordered the QRP Atlantic 75 2x45 version assuming it would sound better than the MoFi, becasue most of my AP/QRP titles sound better than most of my MoFi titles. I haven't had a chance to do the comparison yet, things have been unusually busy these past few weeks.
    I'm super excited to hear your take. Maybe this weekend I'll get a chance to compare my mofi and atlantic 75 versions.
    A few years ago, I was at the GroundUP music festival in North Miami Beach and David Crosby was one of the headliners. His show was magical.
    The next day, I was watching a different band, it was a local band not a household name. But they were cookin'. There was limited seating and most of us were standing. In the middle of a tune, I noticed that Cros was standing immediately to my right, digging on the music like me and everyone else. He was so close to me, I could have touched him. I could have given him a hug and tell him how the CSN record with Guinevere and Suite Judy Blue Eyes was the first record I ever bought as a kid. But I was too starstruck and nervous. Plus it would have been weird for him for a stranger, a grown man, to hug him in the middle of watching a concert. Oh well.
    Have you been to the GUMfest? It's small, the crowd is well-behaved, the music is great, the food is (mostly) great (though a bit pricey), and the festival grounds are right next to the beach & ocean. Plus, many of the artists do workshops where you can learn about their craft, their approach to the music, stuff like that. And the musicians are very accessible, you can meet almost every one of them, because when they're not on the stage, they're watching other bands, or wandering around the festival grounds interacting with fans.

      Great story! No I have never been to it, but I will investigate if it's still going on. Haven't heard too much about it. I'm glad you are excited for this video. I too was thrilled with the MOFI when it was released. I preferred it to the Grundman Classic 33 and the Bellman 50th. My system was much different when I did the last comparison over a year ago. Now there is new cartridge, phono stage, amp, and speakers! I really sat down and carefully went back and forth between these two and.....
      I'll keep you in suspense until tomorrow!
      I can't wait to hear back from you after you've heard both back to back. I bet your experience will mirror mine.

    Great vid, as always, Scott! I've got weird luck. I live in an area with lots of good record stores and the surest way to guarantee that I find an affordable OG pressing is to announce a gourmet reissue. Alan Parsons, CSN, Bad Co., and then just last week.... This one! Every time MoFi or AP announce a title, an OG shows up in a local shop. It's such a great album. The 2 Atlantic 75 titles I've gotten so far include CS&N. I hadn't planned on getting this one. I may have to reconsider.

The Classic edition struck me as detailed, but it didn’t knock me out. The MOFI really moved me. Cowboy Movie felt like a warm blanket of sound. Very powerful and moving with a vivid soundstage. However, the Atlantic 75 had better overall balance. I’m sure I didn’t give them all as critical a listen; these are more initial impressions. I know it's crazy what we do in this hobby, and getting another expensive copy - well there better be a reason that is musically and sonically important. The MOFI is a good record, but I think this one is quite a bit better. The MOFI grabs you with its impressive dynamic range and extended detail and bass. It's quite impressive and was my favorite since it arrived. I think 45 is a must for this album. Bernie's gives us the advantages of the format with a more refined, natural, organic and overall musical presentation.

I have been listening to an original pressing of this album for many years, it has always been a stand out recording in original for and OGs use to sell for good $$. I am a bit concerned with how these reviews are going towards being system dependent which throws me off. Hi Mark. The system changes are an interesting thing in how I perceive these records. If anything I am moving away from an analytical system because I don't enjoy that. All tubes, a very natural sounding speaker. It sounds like we're on a similar path. Upgrading but avoiding a clinical, soulless presentation. You probably know by now by sonic priorities - natural sound with a touch of warmth. I can't stand bright etched overly detailed sound . I feel I'm in the best position I've ever been in to comment on sound differences. I'm certain if you had these two side by side, you'd appreciate the MOFI, but love the AP.

      Just to expand a bit on system voicing, I knew I was headed in the wrong direction a couple of years ago. I had a good sound in general, but I was never feeling like exploring my collection and was limiting my choices to audiophile stuff that was going to sound great on it. I was avoiding playing a lot of my collection because the system was not allowing me to enjoy those other records as much. So I went through and got some advice from someone I trusted, and brought more tubes into the system, addressed the cartridge and speakers, and my collection was back in rotation. I had the excitement to hear the next record after record, and it was a relief. Now my system doesn't make a poor recording sound magically good, but each one is shown in its best light. The system is more musical now, rather than hifi verging on analytical.

    Hi Scott, Good review. I compared DR values from mofi to A75. The mofi is a bit more dynamic. I like them both. The mofi is certainly more detailed. Mofi seems so hifi!
    Is it possible we are just hearing the difference between Bernie and Krieg's speakers? It is interesting that you notice a difference with your speaker changes. I know Bernie prides himself on his speakers. They both will stay with me. The mofi seems so hifi. Bernie’s seems dare is say “grainy”. It like 4k vs DVD. What do I want to watch? Well, I am a details guy so I appreciate the uber clarity.

      I would certainly agree, the MOFI is a bit more dynamic and detailed. It is a good record, one of their best. It's just now hearing this new one, I can see how it's enhanced a bit for a more hi fi presentation. I think some might prefer it, though in my system right now I preferred the more slightly laid back, organic sound that Bernie got out of this. I'll be keeping both!
      I didn't sense the graininess, but perhaps the sharp clarity of the MOFI could make Bernie's cut seem more diffuse. I just think it works for this recording. I was very surprised Bernie got Music Is Love to be more listenable. It's always stuck out as a mix of lo fi and hi fi. I thought is sounded better than ever on the AP.

    I finally got around to listening to this version and comparing it to the Mofi. Overall, both sound very good, but the Mofi seems a tad bloated on the bass and overall the vocals seem more recessed and less distinct than on the Atlantic 75th. That’s not to say that the Mofi is a bad sounding pressing; it isn’t. It’s just that to my ears and on my system, the Atlantic 75th sounds more balanced and natural. I continue, however, to find it frustrating how the 75th Anniversary edition jackets are smaller than traditional 12 inch vinyl jackets. It’s going to require a custom cut on my VSS dual pocket sleeves to create a tighter fit. I’m mystified by this.

    • @ThePressingMatters
      @ThePressingMatters  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Agreed, the MOFI is exactly as you describe, and it's not a bad job at all. I always liked it and still do. The bass seems like it is more in balance (for this recording) on the Atlantic. These are subtleties and I can understand some may prefer the MOFI. For sure the Atlantic is a more balanced presentation.
      If you can figure out how to custom cut the sleeves for smaller gatefolds, I'd love to know the technique. I wish they would create a slightly shorter version for doing gatefolds as we do.

    Hey Scott,
    How does this pressing handle the distortion in the vocals on the first two tracks? When I bought the MOFI, I think the consensus was that it was baked into the tapes. But if this has less high end attenuation, hopefully there is less distortion.

      It's always going to be there to some extent on Music is Love. For the second track, I'm not sure I know what you hear - I'll have to doublecheck for any distortion on Cowboy Movie. I don't recall any of much significance.
      I felt this pressing handled it better than any other I've heard, but Music is Love will always sound that way.

      @@ThePressingMattersthanks for thoughts. I listened to it yesterday and heard some distortion on Cowboy Movie’s vocals, but I think my stylus is nearing the end of its life and will be replacing it ASAP. So that could be the culprit

    Scott, I wouldn't make the assumption about the Classic 45 if you've only heard the 33. With regard to the Classic 33 and 45 of Kind Of Blue, for instance, they were cut years apart and sound somewhat different, some of it having to do with it being cut at 45. I'm sure.
    That being said, good comment about knowing the system (including the room and room treatment) of the reviewer. Of course, there are other factors such as their ears and their knowledge of natural tonality.

      Hi Jeff,
      You have a point of course, and there shouldn't be an assumption. Probably wasn't necessary to comment about it, even in speculation.

      I was wondering if you have this recording, and which version you have.

      Scott, I have a 1st press Italian pressing, believe it or not. It had been recommended to me years ago, as, I was told, they tube mastered their records. I have no other copy with which to compare, and haven't heard it years. But with this latest release. I want to pull it out (the LP, that is) and listen to it. 🙂

    What do you think of the 33.3 Chris Bellman cut ? If you made a video answering this I apologize.

      @ThePressingMatters  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I'd really need to revisit it. When I shot out the 33s (Classic and Rhino) it was a long time ago in a different system. I can take a listen soon and let you know. However if you don't mind 45s, this record really benefits from it.
      I think at the time I might have preferred the Classic. Would you like me to listen to the Bellman and the Atlantic? That actually would be good to do.

      @@ThePressingMatters - that’d be great, and I love 45 rpm’s. Since Bernie and Chris share a shop plus the edge 45 rpm gives it might be the 45 by a nose. Thanks !

      I just listened to it tonight. Then played the Atlantic. There's no question in my mind - the Atlantic is superior. Much more open sounding, many stunning and beautiful moments. The Bellman is ok, but I never felt at any time it bettered the Atlantic. Much better overall musical involvement with the Atlantic. The music feels expansive, like it can finally breathe. I would seriously consider it over any other pressing. Hope that helps!

      Well, I'd say I'm sticking closely to my map of what I feel are essential jazz releases I know I will play more than a few times. There's such a flood of stuff I get a bit overwhelmed. I'm looking forward to some things coming up in the AS Verve Series. I also have a temporary low budget, due to a big system upgrade.

    In my opinion the 45 RPM Mobile Fi is not so good. I guess if this would be AAA. Unfortunately I wasted my money on this one since I prefer by large an original US pressing that I bought many years ago

    • @ThePressingMatters
      @ThePressingMatters  หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Yes, I understand that the MOFI is just not going to please every listener. Originals are so good, so natural, that the MOFI seems a bit odd with the enhancements.
