Nice to see the extra space in the grow tent, at least you can most of them out in the fresh air. Good luck with any decision you make 🤞

The space is a breath of fresh air in itself and thank you!

If you're still looking for chill hours Toowoomba Qld is a great option, has enough chill hours for stone fruits but doesn't quite frost so you can keep all the tropical trees going too. I'm 60km west of Toowoomba and we get up to -6 frost so it can be a struggle for me to keep the tropical trees alive through the winters.

My wife would need to transit to Brisbane city at least once a week, we are looking around the Barellan Point/Karana Downs area, what are your thoughts about here?

@@LiveLoveCanberra yeah sorry I couldn't comment on Brissy, just that's it gets very humid. It's only just over an hour and a half from Toowoomba into Brisbane City if that was still an option.

Hey Nathan if you do come up to Brisbane to look around, happy to show you what you can grow here. I am in Camira 1/2 way between Ipswich and Brisbane. Can still grow stonefruit, just the low chill varieties. So many trees will grow and fruit here. But the prices have gone up a lot here, my 1/2 acre that I bought for a few hundred is now over a mill.

Will definitely reach out, would be good to get to know some similarly minded people. It is a good time to be a property owner too, except what comes in one hand goes out another. You have to spend what you achieved just to get something equivalent...

@@LiveLoveCanberra no problems just let me know when you are up here, I even have a granny flat if you and the family need to stay up here for a night. I have about 150-200fruit trees in the ground and stacks still in pots so I will give you an idea what will grow here. Also grow my own vegetables and have ducks, chooks and quail to eat.
Yes I agree the huge range I property prices are only good if you are selling investment properties. Had 2 properties here so I cashed in a while back.

Great video, good to see the plants progressing. You mentioned in this video and previous about various online fig enthusiast communities - have you got any particular suggestions that a budding enthusiast could check out? Cheers.

What a difficult decision to make Nathan. Queensland sounds good.
There pro's and cons either way. I truly wish you all the best in your de ision making(along with your wife).
You aren't wrong re: constant up potting, having to buy endless bags of mixes etc
Look forward to you next update. Cheers

Nathan I've been wanting to ask you if you have ever used those little organza bags the American fig growers use on their figs? And if so, where do you get them from. Regards Marilyn

I like the idea of moving to Brisbane. I tried to do it a few years back but family wasn’t onboard lol! I now want to go to FNQ!! But tbh, Sydney is a good medium, a lot of those plants you have in the tent are in ground here. Only my abius and soursop came inside last winter. Issue here is I would love another block of land for a food forest, but that’s just unrealistic given Sydney’s prices. You’ll also struggle to get a decent crop on many of your temperate fruits, cherries in particular, but many others too. Trade offs wherever you go.

    • @LiveLoveCanberra
      @LiveLoveCanberra  ปีที่แล้ว

Sydney is just a bit big and busy and fast for me, I grew up in country WA in the Pilbara so I like to take things at a steady pace :) FNQ is very attractive though my wife would bever allow

Sometimes a problem shared results in halving the problem . My eldest daughter in process of moving from the Central Coast to North Coast of NSW . The Cost of diesel is astronomical for driving a rental truck . I'm in Ipswich QLD on the fringe of the rural scene having moved family way back in 88 from the Central Coast .. I'm mentioning this as it appears a smart move for you depending on many factors other than your horticultural interests . Point being moving plants would be very expensive maybe best to consolidate by only taking the most important for you , not forgetting various state quarantine codes . To make light of a long move maybe best to do so in Autumn . For me all plants in pots which were mainly my prized Azaleas I shook off the potting mix then dampened some Coco coir with Seasol to ease the shock then tied the root ball up . That way dehydration wasn't so severe these days I use new technology in GOGO juice from Bunnings its magic . A point of interest recently I made up a potting mix , 1st stage I baked the wood chips , once cooled I then soaked them in a made up mixture of Gogo juice . Once absorbed I then used crushed Charcoal 50 / 50 with Perlite . Mixed everything with Yates seed & Cutting starter mix .
The cuttings , Figs , a new interest I soaked in mixture of Hydogen Poroxide 3% & water . Once dried I sealed the tops with clear grafting tape , marked each cutting then dipped into a starting hormone powder . Once potted I use warm water to ease the chill factor giving them a drink with a lite dose of GOGO juice. Anyway all that aside I really like your enthusiasm, notifications & story as many do , good luck . Kind regards John .

Ipswich is where we are looking at, somewhere around Mount Crosby or Barellan Point there seems to be properties that would be suitable. For the majority of the temperate plants, I dont think there would be enough chill hours, so would sell them first. The figs I would likely do multiple trips back and forth to bring them across, likely beginning next year. How do you find the Ipswich area?

@@LiveLoveCanberra I've taken the liberty to check some ideas today . As for Borallan point , I know it well as back in 95 I bought an acre on the Bremer River we were planning to build there . The negatives learnt as there was only one road into the area & the same road out . Then on the other side of the river there was an abattoir although unseen the stench whenever a westerly wind blew made it unpleasant, so we didn't build . We had been living in Karalee opposite the school , higher land flooding not an issue . I was working at Griffith University in Nathan only a half hour trip this was back in beginnings of the crazy 90s . I feel you would have a better chance in areas in Karalee for small acres , also higher land as I said earlier. MtCrosby would be good as well . Just remember the lower areas do flood . Now today I took the liberty of making some phone enquires with no names mentioned. Another daughter in Kilcoy mentioned an area Dalaney creek 4514 . I checked some vacant land, I rang a beaut bloke a Bob Ferguson , land sales 0428737354 , prices 3070m2 $575,000 . Another , 30386m2 $569,000 , Another 1& a quarter acre $630,000 . Pretty scary stuff for me at 81 I've slowed my renovations down having usually done 2 a year . Still your into the real estate industry most people I discussed with felt getting work shouldn't be difficult for you . Another daughter in the opposite direction Canungra as I drive to visit I see beautiful areas one comes to mind its Buccan 4207 . Larger acreages , 3 acres with house $ 850,000, Another 5 acres $1million , others 1 & a half acres $650 to $ 700,000 with house . His number 0480304900 Henery Kyaw, working at Taylor Cook real estate. He also recommends looking at Tambourine 4270 , pointing out not far to travel to the Goldie nor Brisbane as I've just noticed your wife has a need to visit the city .
Nathan I notice one of your followers mentioned Toowoomba & areas , I totally agree with her summery . Also agree no problem to set fruit yet understand the importance of a happy wife = a happy life . Anything else I can offer just buzz. Regards John .
Anyway hope to have been some help

G'day Nathan, you only live once, I'd say go for it. The kids would love it also. Grap you favourite trees and just start again. In the subtropical the trees grow fast but best of all realestate is pretty affordable and being an agent you would find employment easy. You of course would have to say goodbye to your grow tent and 3 peace suit.
