I came here looking for Daniel Smith perylene maroon, for it's blood-like appearance (I know, so macabre), so what a treat to see all of these different swatches! Still loving the DS, but ooohhhh that Isaro is niiiiiice. Thank you!
Thank you for showing the differences between how the paints act on wood pulp vs cotton paper. I definitely notice the issues with my White Nights version on wood pulp, while it's much less pronounced on cotton. White Nights has this really interesting textured look that isn't granulation... it almost looks a little like pixelation maybe? 🤔 Hard to describe. But Da Vinci? That's one smooth paint. And while you have to be careful mixing with higher tinting colors, still means I have to use less paint then the weaker tinting ones.
The gouache comparison has been interesting to see especially how it preforms better on cellulose paper. It would be interesting to see a painting in WN watercolor and WN gouache. I would love to see a gouache comparison from you similar to the watercolor showdown series. It might be worth noting that if you use gouache opaquely it's not going to last as long as the same amount of watercolor. I like using M Graham gouache because it doesn't crumble on my pallet and it's a bit easier to rewet. All the WN gouache I've used has crumbled like crazy when it dries and gets everywhere. I think folks that primarily use WN gouache use them wet or keep them in stay wet pallets that seal each well off from each other.
I really love the Mission Gold one, but man the sheen on it is real rough. M. Graham and Daniel Smith are beautiful too despite their streakiness, but if I had to pick a fave, what can I say, I love how the Isaro one really does just look like blood, that's so goth I love it
I have Daniel Smith and Roman Szmal and I gotta say Daniel Smith was my overall winner in this showdown. I like that you get all those stages of gradation with it. It has a lot of character. That said the Schmincke and DaVinci mixes were my favorites.
There's always so many variables. I think this is a great series, but on this one I have a very different experience. (Roman Szmal) Could be so many things affecting that, but it is interesting
I have trouble using perylene maroon in my botanical flowers. I want to like it and I’ve seen it used by many TH-cam art teachers. But I find it goes too Brown. I have both Daniel Smith and Windsor newton. Does anyone else have this problem.
Unrelated question. I just heard that Windsor and Newton had to change the formula on some of their colors because one of the pigments is no longer available. Have you heard anything about this?
The pigment red 206 is discontinued. In the Winsor and Newton watercolour the Quinacridone gold is now changed to transparent gold deep. Brown madders and permanent alizarin crimsons pigment will be replaced by perylene maroon PR179.
M. Graham is a favorite, but any with the super deep mass tone are perfect. One of my favorite hues of all time!
Mine too, I use it all the time.

That green sheen in MG would look amazing for feathers.
Great video (as always!), it’s just that now I’m super curious about the paint with the drying shift that bothers you, haha! 😂🙈

Love the W&N gouache is gouache. It doesn't have a place here.
