So for this, he starts on a hot mic singing live. Then they switch over to the track for a lot of the dance-heavy sections. I suspect the track was re-recorded as it doesn't seem to have quite the record quality in it. Then they switch back to live. But by then with all the dancing, something had happened to his mic. You can hear also hear he's a little out of breath. He started lip syncing during his Bad tour. He realized it was just too difficult to do all the dancing and singing for two hours straight. But he still usually sang the slower songs live. If you watch This Is It, apparently he was in tremendous shape during his preparation for that tour. He planned on singing every song live and his practice performances in the movie show he was up to the task. Most likely, this was due to 1) a bit of a rededication to live performances and wanting to show he was still the top dog, and 2) a much more limited schedule. It's much easier to dance and sing all of your numbers for 9 dates in one location than it is to do it 300 times a year all over the world.
