I thought that the original manga was pretty cute, but like you said, it doesn't really have any of those cute moments of after they get into the relationship, nor did it really manage to give closure to some of the unclear aspects of their relationship. The After School manga basically gives a chapter to each character, but I only read the ending with Adagaki Aki. I thought it had some of those cute moments, and it gave somewhat of a closure to the idea that Adagaki still liked the old Masamune. It managed to make me feel satisfied for the most part without adding too much to the story, so I think it's worth a read!
