    This is a very common question that I get from people thinking about moving to Las Vegas. It is an important one to ask because you want to give yourself some financial cushion when you move to a new place. This is especially true if you do not have employment lined up before you move.
    The answer to this question will be different for everyone because people that are moving to Las Vegas come here under many different circumstances. A single person who just completed college will likely need to save a different amount of money in their savings account compared to someone who is 37 years old, married, has three small children that need daycare and is looking to purchase a home in a family friendly neighborhood. Before you make the move, the best way to ask this question is “How many months of expenses do I need to have saved in my account?” This way you can devise a monthly budget that is unique to you.
    When I began living in Las Vegas I had enough in my banking account to cover a few months of expenses. I had already paid the deposit and the first month of rent at my place. I also already had a job lined up before I moved to Las Vegas. Even if you have employment in place, I would suggest having several months expenses saved in your budget. If you are going to be moving to Las Vegas without a job in place, then I would suggest saving even more. Six months or more would be preferable.
    Just keep in mind that this will depend on each individual scenario and each person’s risk tolerance. If you are young, single, without very many financial obligations, financially responsible and you are willing to take whatever work you can just to get your footing out here, then you can probably take on a higher risk by not having as much money saved. If you have a family you are supporting then your scenario is going to be different.
    Write out a monthly budget for where you live now. Then go online and compare the cost of living in Las Vegas to the cost of living to where you live now. Look at apartment rents in Vegas, gas prices, food prices, etc. to see it compares to where you live now. Do you best to estimate how much money you would need to budget each month to cover your monthly costs out here. Work to save at least a few months or more of expenses, and be sure to give yourself some cushion by aiming to save more than you think you will need.

    Realistically 3-4K would be good and that’s not counting first month rent, that way u can get a cheap Corolla to drive and find work or better yet, make a trip out to Vegas ahead of time.

    As a New Yorker I'm used to things being expensive so I figure save up between four and five grand with a job lined up I should be good

    • @JacobslifeinVegas
      @JacobslifeinVegas  9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +Nyiswhereibelong I guess if there is one "benefit" to coming from a major city like New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Miami, etc. is that you are accustomed to a high cost of living. Your perspective of cost of living will be way different when you move here than someone from say, Omaha, Nebraska, who might see the cost of living in Vegas as pretty normal in their eyes.

    You hit right on the head with this one. You'd better save quite a bit before moving here, especially if you have a family. You also have to think about moving expenses if a job relocation doesn't pay for the move. It cost us more than $3000 to have our furniture moved from Indianapolis to Las Vegas. We had a moving company do this for us. It was too hot in July for us to do it ourselves. After doing research, we found that renting a moving van and doing it ourselves really wasn't much cheaper. We've been here for about 6 weeks now and with my wife having a job, we are ok on bills for now. I'm still looking for a job in my chosen field. Take it from me, getting a job won't happen overnight. You definitely have to have a few months worth of money saved and allow yourself some time to find a decent job.

    • @JacobslifeinVegas
      @JacobslifeinVegas  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Richard Muncy Thanks Richard. I'm glad to hear that you and your wife went about doing things the right way. You guys really did your due diligence before you came out here, which is the biggest part. I share as much information as I can with people, but everyone has to do their own homework.

    My situation might be different from others. I own a condo in Seattle and moving to Vegas later this year. I’ll need to have enough money to not only pay for rent in Vegas. I will also need money to pay mortgage for my condo as well. I’m selling the condo but I’ll still be making payments until it gets sold.

    I just came across your channel and this is very helpful information! I've recently decided to move to Vegas and I'm going to work 2 jobs, 1 full time that pays $13 an hour and 1 part time that pays $9 an hour. I am 21 years old and still live at home. I don't have any bills outside of car insurance so saving will be easy for me barring any different circumstance. I'm hoping to have enough to move out by next April. Hypothetically speaking, would that be more than enough to move out?

    My entire family are planning a move to Las Vegas. We're a very close family so we really didn't want to part and be so far away from each other. So my husband and I, my oldest daughter her husband and their kids and of course my other 2 adult daughters as well. We were planning on doing it by the end of the year Oct-Nov. The plan is for all of us to save money, when we have a nice amount saved between all of us then we would find a place to live and have jobs lined up before actually moving there. We're planning on living together for the first year while we settle in, work and get more money saved up. After the first year everyone will be moving out into their own places. So this is all new to us and hopefully this is a good plan. I'd love to know your thoughts on this. :-)

      I think it's great that your family is very much on the same page about moving to Vegas. Everyone living together that first year is going to be an adjustment for everyone. It sounds like your family has a great plan put together to give everyone the best chance to succeed. Great job Renee!

    Hello Mr. Jacobs.. my name is Mr. Hill.. I use to live in Las Vegas early in the new millennium.. NOW live in Florida but want to move back Vegas again in hopefully in a year or two. I am on disability and also receive SSI. I have heard the housing cost maybe a little higher than where I am now.. I was told that the Houses are cheaper than the apartments.. IS THIS TRUE?? like you say "have your ducks in a row" So what is the difference (in price) between a house and apt. @ las Vegas. I wanna know like you say I need to know my limitations before moving there. I am not very outgoing because of my illness but I DO want to live in QUITE NEIGHBORHOODS where not much noisy. Thanks for reading this from me hope to here from AND see you soon :')
