i'm assuming the Mirage backstory for April's true origin is no longer considered canon because that is truly messed up; to find out that you aren't technically real and are just a living drawing is truly dark.

I want to think of vol.4 as same as vol.3- it's a fever dream. Classic TMNT are Tales, Vol.1 and Turtle Soup. Maybe Vol.2, but I kinda don't like it neither. If you mean canon by now, then obviously no, since IDW is entirely different universe.

The story is by the original creator (Peter Laird) and It's canon in Mirage TMNT. And it's not out of place at all, OG TMNT was always a dark and wierd series with things like the revived worm Shredder and the unsuccessful clones, or Splinter committing cannibalism in City at War, etc. Or even The River storyline, which is technically not canon, but it was the part of the original Mirage run. The horror element was always there.
Is it any more messed up than April finding out she was merely the least deformed clone from an alien experiment, and also her best friend was actually a killer robot? 😃 (TMNT 2012)

By far a few dark moments I remember from my childhood from 2012 are, 1) Splinter’s vision/nightmare of Rat king- “Darkest plight” 2) Jei kills all of the turtles- “Osoroshi no Tabi” 3) Earth’s destruction- “Annihilation: Earth: Part 2” 4) The Thing draining Raph’s mutagen- “Within the woods” 5) April scatters Donnie- “The power inside her” These moments stood out to me the most in 2012 but they’re not the only five, there are definitely more.

But it was Rick Veitch, not Laird or Eastman, who created that villain so knockoffs were made to avoid having to pay royalties. So instead of Bloodsucker we now have Wyrm and the Thing thing
I mentioned this on the previous video, but in the original Mirage comics, Casey accidentally kills a kid and is _heavily_ tormented psychologically by it for pretty much the remainder of the original Vol. 1 run.
Oh I remember that. It's "Shades of Grey" story. The worst thing about is that it's kinda...just ends? He's tortured by it, Nobody admits it was an accident and... that's it. That's the story. Casey is a murderer.
The last story is the only one I hadn't seen myself and it's been described to me in a derogatory way by friends who explained what it said about April's origins... I'm pretty amazed now that they skipped over the cockroaches and the vanishing babies.

while the show is overall really lighthearted I can't help but think of the rise of the tmnt scene where shredder ruins their lair. I know it happens in the other versions as well but there's just sumn about how this one's done. All of Donnie tech being destroyed, Raph learning being leader is possibly not it for him with all the pressure, splinter and draxum staying behind to fight the shredder, them all watching Karai die right in front of them, idk man. It's heartbreaking. And everything after that like Raph's mental breakdown. I don't know if you put this on the list but Casey Jones backstory is very dark. The story about how he was affected when the Purple Dragons and Hun burnt down his family business and k**led his father then seriously beat him as well. It was kind of similar to the 03 TMNT series. And the other story about Casey and what happened to Shadow Jones mom. And the Crystal that belongs to Kirby was also was in the 2013 TMNT series giving a nod to April's backstory.
I remember reading a graphic novel of ninja turtles qhen I was a kid not sure ifnitnwas by image Idw or mirage but they gotncaptured by triceratops alien's and but into gladiatorial combat and started killing the other combatants I was like wow thus is bloody and awsome
Honestly one thing I was curious about if he was a if he was using an exoskeleton why did he wait till the turtles were gone to stand up he could have easily stood up stabbed Leonardo in the through the chest because it would caught him off guard
