    What only a few reviewers of the p4 have mentioned, with regards to one of the advantages of having the rear camera, is that the field of view you get looking in the digital rear view mirror is about 30 degrees WIDER, than looking out of a normal rear view mirror and through the rear window. It’s actually a significant safety feature. In addition…..in a normal car, if you had dogs in the back, or stuff loaded up that could obstruct your view from the rear….you have none of that with the view from the external camera.

    In a past life, early 1970s, I used to drive an Escort van. No rear wipers in those days and the slightest drop of rain rendered the back windows useless.
    Therefore the lack of a rear window wouldn't bother me and you do now have a rear camera as a bonus.

  • @bobsingeton2719
    @bobsingeton2719 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +33

    Obviously I would need to drive one first, but based on this and other reviews, I'd have one if I could afford one. No rear window doesn't bother me... having driven box vans as a roadie in my younger years they didn't have rear windows either! If the camera that feeds the "rear view mirror" has a wider field of view and is hi-def, surely that's a plus not a minus? Like the looks. Like the interior space. As you say, only down side is the over-reliance on menus and the screen to do simple tasks like adjusting the air vents

      Can’t agree more about the rear mirror. Most cars have a pigeon hole view that you can barely see out of

    • @davidhunternyc1
      @davidhunternyc1 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      ... but a car isn't a box van. A car is a car. There is no need to delete the rear window. The "rear view mirror" with the wide field of view can still be installed. What happens when the rear view mirror fails? Then what? All the wires, chips, and computers don't magically work all time and forever. The rear window delete is a solution searching for a problem. This car is a failure.

      I think it's a good idea to free up some headroom and allow one to pack the trunk to the roof. Cameras are getting better over time and will last for years. I hope they don't do like Tesla and stop offering parking sensors.

    I am driving Volvo C40 and it practically doesn’t have rear window at least you can’t see anything from rear view mirror. Excellent side mirrors is just enough added to that there are 360 cameras. Blind spot warning and cross traffic alerts is really enough. So I don’t need rear window. Vans have been driven without rear windows for years.

    • @miskatonic6210
      @miskatonic6210 หลายเดือนก่อน

      There just was a deadly incident in germany, because a driver relied on a blind spot assistant that just didn't register a cyclist.
      You are sacrificing safety, relying on countless electrical systems when you could just have a simple window that always works 🙄
      Do you know how often radar systems in cars fail? They are notoriously unreliable. It also just needs some dirt or rain or fog or snow to render them useless.

    After having an I-Pace and now a kia EV6 GT, this could be my next one, I love it. Only downside for me is that it’s a really big car, can be difficult to maneuver in carparks. But maybe I’ll have to keep my EV6 as EV’s depreciate so much… Anyway love the car, the review but even more your lovely dog ;)

    Only downside of the digital rearview mirror is the focus depth. In any analogue mirror I can read the license plates of cars behind me without using my reading glasses. Luckily the wing mirrors are still analogue so those rare occasions when this becomes a problem it is solved by simply looking thru a side mirror instead.
    Everything else with that digital mirror is benefits! It is amazing! 😎👍

    Manufacturers typically do not put high quality glass on their lower tier cars, which is probably why you were hearing wind noise on this car as opposed to the AWD version. That is one thing that annoyed me when considering luxury cars. Our KIA Optima Hybrid had less cabin noise (also more space, equipment, etc. and less issues) when compared to our Volvo S60 T5. I hope they get the software bugs sorted on these by the time they get to customers. I was considering the RWD LR version, but now am thinking, I should just get the AWD version (or another brand for more range) or just go back to Audi as the e-tron has been updated, maybe Q6 instead of Q8 this time as they both have air suspension. Thanks for the video!

    Comprehensive and professional review. Test drove the dual motor the other day and the rear view camera does take a lot of getting used to, especially from a depth perception point of view. Am sure it will become second nature after a while like any new technology and we’ll soon find out after I take delivery in December. Will be sorry to see my 2 go, but this is a step up spec wise.

    Great video as usual, like all your Polestar videos. I can honestly say with no disrespect to you, you mentioned some of the safety features and one being the feature for awareness whilst driving and taking your eye off the road to look at the screen on the dash. Tbf, you were at that moment I noticed it the most looking towards your own in car camera for this video. So not 100% it being an issue per se. I've been lucky enough to sit in the car and unfortunately not test drive yet myself, but that rear view mirror is great from what I can tell. But in all, I still prefer the Polestar 3. Keep up the great review vides. Thanks.

    • @AutoEV

      The camera works well at night as it dazzles less due to the screen and sensor used. They tested it in the Arctic circle for bad weather with Gentex (the company who makes the camera) and it has proven to be better than a mirror in low light and low temperatures where moisture is present. But obviously it will take real world use to truly see how it fares.

    It’s beautifully designed and evidently good to drive and travel in. And I might well have bought one. But I’m concerned about all the delays: at the Bicester launch event in April, there were supposed to be test drives available in June. Now it’s July and there are only LHD pre-production cars that are still getting software tweaks in response to reviewers’ comments. UK customer deliveries ‘at the end of 2024’? Maybe, but I bought a BMW instead.
    I really want Polestar to succeed. The designs are fantastic and the sustainability ethos is exactly right. But they have to show that they can get products to market, and give customers the confidence that those products will be supported over a long service life. I don’t feel enough of that confidence yet.

    I test-drove an EV car that had a switchable digital rear view mirror last year, the Subaru Solterra. I straight away realised that because I wear varifocal glassed I would need to look through the bottom of my glasses to focus on the digital mirror and so look above the mirror, of course with a glass mirror the focus is to infinity and I use the top of the glasses. Since I only had 10 minutes with the car I gave up on the digital mirror. Brian, I see that you wear glasses, are they varifocal? Did you find that you could overcome this? A possible (radical) option would be to have the rear view "mirror/camera" someone on the dashboard so you are looking down to overcome this issue.

Both have advantages and potential pitfalls, I do like the Tesla but i am wary of there being a new model out within months of mine arriving (ok it’s vanity I suppose) my concern with the 4 is the mirror, I wear glasses and my wife wears varifocals. I wouldn’t have considered it but I’ve read quite a few stories about people saying it’s a deal breaker for them when they wear glasses. Drove one at the weekend coming from a Tesla model 3 standard RWD 300hp. The 540 had poke but it just did not have the fun feel that the Tesla has. Likely because we're talking pulling power and I must confess I have not compared torque. Lovely inside but the screen controls drove me a bit barmy as did the buttons on the steering wheel. Again it's probably what you're used to and it is very hard not to compare back to Tesla GUI. For £70k, I have decided against it. It is very nice indeed but boy it just didn't warrant that price hike for me. Each to their own it was a solid build.

    Electronic rear-view mirrors are not a problem, if calibrated properly. I did appreciate the one in the Honda e, even if it can sometimes give you discomfort before your brain gets used to it. However, the Honda e has a rear-window, so you can use the camera or the normal mirror. Which brings us to the big question mark: what happens if the camera in the rear of the PS4 is damaged, or worse, malfunctions while you are driving? That is my problem with Polestar in general. I do like the brand and I was considering buying the PS2 when it came out. What stopped me was the lack of infrastructure for maintenance and repair. Polestar has only showrooms and no workshops. If something goes wrong, you are supposed to go to a Volvo dealer, if Polestar has a partnership with one near you. However, the Volvo personnel knows very little of Polestar. Moreover, since the two brands have split up, I am not even sure Volvo will still accept maintenance or repair on a Polestar.

    Having looked for any EVs to improve on Kia's EV6, I had my eye on the polestar 4. Having seen your review on the EV6 you were equally impressed by that car over a year over a year ago.
    Given that a similarly specified polestar 4 is 10+ grand more than the EV6. I can't see how this is any better especially when you bear in mind that the single motor pole star 4 can only tow 1500 kilos whereas the EV6 RWD and AWD can both tow 1600 kilos.
    I love to know how Auto EV stack piece 2 against each other!

      The Single Motor car I drive here is on passive dampers which, having driven the Dual Motor car, was a bit better albeit it’s in the firm side of average. Think BMW MSport versus SE model and that’s how the Polestar 4 rides. Would’ve been good to have had longer with the car, but time constraints meant I didn’t, and although I drove the car in Spain on the Polestar 3 launch, it wasn’t the final specification on the chassis, so would be unfair to have used that video (as many have done). It isn’t as firm as my long term BMW iX2, but I wouldn’t say the ride quality was its best asset. I’d wait to try it for yourself before passing judgement.

    No amount of excuses is going to justify no rear window. Polestar is already underwater and the Polestar 4 car is going to bury this company. Imagine too how much this car is going to cost once the warranty ends and the computers start to fail. The problems will be endless and do you think your car insurance is going cover the costs of fixing them? If so, I've got a bridge to sell you. This EV will be heading straight to the junkyard. It's a shame, because the automotive designers made a beautiful looking car. Sadly, the Polestar 4 is an albatross in swan's clothing. The resale value will be 50% of what you paid within a year.

    • @AutoEV
      @AutoEV  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Not sure why you think that. It's no more complicated than many EVs out there, and Polestar have the backing of the huge Geely corporation, and they use proven technology from tech companies such as Google, Qualcomm, LiDar and Gentex, so it isn't as if they are trying to develop their own software. That is one of the things that I admire about the likes of Polestar (as many other manufacturers) they use outside people to do the bits they are good at, and they concentrate on the hard engineering of the car.
