  • While this town south of Houston may be on the deep outskirts of town, it’s rich in culture, history and adventure that you won’t find elsewhere. From classic cigars and pioneer ranches to delicious ethnic cuisines and the best view of the stars you’ve ever seen, you’ll find that trippin’ through Richmond is like taking a trip across the past, present and future of Texas.
At Brazos Bend State Park, which has been named “Home of the American Alligator,” the gators are hanging out on the trails and enjoying the park just like the tourists. It’s the best - and safest - way to get up close and personal with the scaly creatures. Be sure to hit up the Nature Center to learn more about these swamp gators and the other ecosystems and animals in the park.
The beginning of Richmond dates back to the start of Texas in the 1820s when Stephen F. Austin brought the first official settlers to Texas and many of them settled on the Brazos River banks. To learn more about the first settlers visit the Fort Bend Museum. You can also learn about Richmond’s famous feud, the Jay Birds vs. the Woodpeckers (which is surprisingly not about birds at all…) and you can see Deaf Smith’s grave.
The George Ranch Historical Park is an awesome place to not only learn about the George Family but also about the early pioneer days of Texas. This living history experience takes you through four generations of the George Family. The historic houses on the ranch span from the 1830’s to the 1930’s giving you a peak into life in the different eras of Texas. If you happen to be in town on a Saturday, stop by the ranch for a full historic meal.
For a glimpse into the galaxies and beyond, head to the George Observatory in nearby Needville, TX. The massive telescope makes it look like Jupiter and Orion’s Belt are within reach. This fascinating view of the night skies is definitely one you don’t want to miss.
The best place to get a cup of Joe and learn a little bit about Richmond’s history is at Joseph’s Cigars. This historic shop started in 1903 by the Joseph’s as a cart that sold candy and peanuts around town. Now more than 100 years later it’s run by 4th generation Michael Joseph who is carrying on the family tradition. It serves up delicious coffee and a hodgepodge of eclectic items from antique guns to English sporting goods.
While you’re in town, you won’t have to look far for exotic cuisine - in fact, you can find amazing Vietnamese food at Country Pho in the neighboring town of Rosenberg. Owners Le and Chau cook authentic pho (pronounced fuh) and other phenomenal dishes made with recipes from their home city of Ho Chi Mihn City (Saigon). The hand-stuffed spring rolls and homemade peanut sauce are out of this world and a must-try!
At Larry’s Original Mexican Restaurant, each dish is served with a side of Tex-Mex history - this Richmond institution has been opened since the 1960’s and not much has changed since. During their many decades of service, they’ve mastered the cheese enchilada which comes bathed in perfect cheesy goodness. And just like back in the good ol’ days, chili con carne (a Tex-Mex staple) is served on everything - including noodles! Order the Spaghetti Mexicana if you’re brave.

Thank you for touring my Hometown! I am 19, and family were historically black cowboys at George Ranch. It makes me happy someone is publishing the history to a wider audience.

Runaway Scrape started in Gonzales. Sam Houston was there with the troops on their way to meet up with Travis at the Alamo. Unfortunately, while camping in Gonzales, they received word that the Alamo had fallen and Santa Ana was going to push east with his troops wiping out whatever Anglos were still around. That's what got people packing up and heading east to the Sabine River.

@@gaslighthotel Wow ''wiping out whatever Anglos were still around'' I've been looking into it as well and it does sound more and more like a conflict of cultures initiated by the far off Mexican government/Santa Ana. Efforts to divide the Tejanos of Mexican descent from their north American allies go back to before the revolution.
For example one agent of Mexico's government José María Sánchez was tasked with simply
surveying the border with Texas and Louisiana. But his report turned into an ugly smear campaign against the Anglo settlers. Sanchez's document titled: "A Trip to Texas in 1828," begins by complaining about the increasing Anglo population. Keep in mind that increasing the Texas population was a goal. However despite the need for population apparently Mexico did not want anyone but Mestizos. Sanchez complains that ''the majority of inhabitants in the Department are North Americans''. This occurred despite the ''Repeated and urgent appeals have been made to the Supreme Government of the federation regarding the imminent danger''
He goes on to deride the ''Americans from the North'' as drunk savages that do not know how to properly cultivate farms or even how to eat. Sanchez shows his claws with a statement I feel echo's the sentiment of the Mexican government as a whole. ''they(Anglos) are in general, in my opinion lazy people of vicious character''
Was at least one aspect of Santa Anna's expedition to perform a type of ethnic cleansing in the disputed territory? It certainly seems like it.
For me this means the iconic slogan and flag COME AND TAKE IT has an even deeper meaning

Unfortunately, The George Ranch stopped doing the historic meals several years ago :-(
When they were mentioned, I got excited thinking they started again, but checked the website & none listed.

Been watching your show and generally like it - until I watched this episode. You finally went to the town I've spent many, many years in and now I have to seriously question your food choices. You picked some obscure Thai restaurant and Larry's. Larry's - seriously? Did you even ask any of the locals about the best cuisine around? There are many stories about Larry's - and none of them good. And when I say stories, I mean BUG (as in cockroach) stories. And the food? The couple of times I've eaten there over the years - the food was mediocre to poor. And that Thai restaurant - I've never even heard of it. Had you asked where the locals go, the first place they'd told you would have been Sandi McGee's - the place is mobbed and you can't even get in the front door. And if you wanted mexican/tex-mex - particularly for breakfast - look no further than Bob's tacos. Or Schultz's for barbecue. The list goes on - but none of the places you picked.
Now I gotta wonder if the places you picked in other towns are actually just as bad.
