Britain’s biggest miscarriage of justice - the Post Office-Horizon scandal - has spawned years of litigation, a four-year inquiry that continues to this day, a compelling television dramatisation, and much soul searching in the legal profession.
More than 900 sub-postmasters were wrongly convicted of theft, fraud and false accounting because of the Post Office’s faulty Horizon software system. Many were jailed, some killed themselves as a result of the shame of having a criminal conviction and others died before they were vindicated by the courts.
The trauma for the legal profession over the involvement of lawyers in the saga initially seems like small beer in comparison, but ethical experts are trying to come to terms with the implications because they will have long-term impact on future behaviour.
