What is Safe Torque Off? - A Galco TV Tech Tip | Galco

Safe Torque Off or STO is the most common and basic drive-integrated safety function. It’s used to prevent unexpected motor rotation in the event of an emergency while the drive remains connected to the power supply. When safe torque off is activated, the motor cannot generate torque, thus stopping and preventing any motor shaft rotation. STO can be used wherever the drive will be brought to a standstill in a sufficiently short time by the load torque or friction or where coasting down of the drive is not relevant to safety.

Ok Ricardo, according to the manual it looks like this is a Network activated Safe-Torque-Off function. If you are not running the drive from a Network control you will need to deactivate the comm function. Sorry but I don't have any further details then this. You can call us at 800-337-1720 and ask for engineering, they may be able to help additionally.

STO is just a safety interlock = lame name.

Sorry you think it is poorly named, however it is a special function described in IEC-61800-5-2 [3] that safeguards the drive from making torque in the motor. An E-STOP function may interrupt an input to the VFD that causes a coast stop function but that requires the drive to read the input then act on it. STO goes directly into the power section of a drive and kills the power to the Gate driver circuits so the output transistors can't be switched at all. This keeps any power from reaching the motor and therefore no torque is possible without relying on the control board running to scan an input and react. STO is very instant power kill of VFD output section for safety, ok?
