- We are very grateful for the opportunity to film a haircut at Cuts and Bends in Oakland, California with Kenneth Hogans Sr. who has been a community barber for more than 60 years!
Kenneth’s shop has been a community fixture since 1981 and is filled with his collections of books, pictures, and paintings. We had a lot of fun spending some time with Kenneth. We couldn’t believe it when he told us he is 82 years old. He continues to work 5 days a week. Kenneth joked he didn’t want to stay at home watching soap operas with his wife. They have been married since 1959 ❤️
Kenneth was born in Mississippi and he began cutting hair when he was a teenager. In 1956, he came out to California and he joined the AirForce. He said his mom thought he was going to California so he could attend Berkeley. However, Kenneth said he really wanted to become a barber!

Weirdly enough i kinda like the look of the shop it's comfy, a lot more than the average barber shop that have a big open room with multiple seats, and a huge window outside towards the street... it kinda makes me nervous almost, i would much prefer to getting my hair cut in a place like this.
I find it so interesting how every single barber has a different style and technique . It’s really an art .

Part of the fun in watching these videos is the not knowing where Harry is going to drop in. Forget the city. You never know what country he'll be in.

I love the sound of a barber moving things in and out of a drawer (or in this case what looks like a bag).

1981, nearly 40 years of history in that place. I bet Mr Kenneth has seen it all in that area. Glad he cut your hair differently most barbers do it the same and flip your hair to the side. Enjoyed the video!
I like this particular one as I love hearing the sound of the brush and the comb and other pieces being picked up, aswell as the sound of the haircut itself!!
Thanks Harry for featuring him. 82 years young I think what keeps him going is he loves what he is doing and that's important. When you love what your doing it keeps you happy.

Thanks for bringing us another relaxing video. I can remember, when I still had hair LOL, going to some of the experienced barbers and getting almost the entire haircut with trimmers. That was many years before ASMR or TH-cam, but this video reminds of those days. Keep up the tremendous work!

Great style and editing as always. This guy has that historic vibe that you so perfectly capture in your series. I imagine a haircut from him would be like a history lesson by favourite uncle
What an interesting place, not only is it a barbershop, but it also holds stacks of books. Being a bookworm myself, the first thing I would do after my haircut, would be to dive into the piles of books. No doubt, this gentleman has some true gems hidden in there. Been waiting a few months for this day
This has got to be one of my favorite videos. First off, I truly love the style that he gave you. I enjoy the way he speaks. The messiness gives the place so much character and a feeling that so many interesting conversationd have taken place there. I like the small talk when the other gentleman cane in there and did he say his son saved money for that haircut? I like the talk about ehats happening in the town it was all just so feel good. Again, I really like that style cut on you Harry.

It must be a nightmare to dust his barber shop with all of the memorabilia and collectibles he has! He looks incredible for 82 years of age. I get tired very easily and I’m only 46 years old! This is just what I need to lull me into a peaceful state so I can go to sleep. Thank you. Oh and I like the haircut.

Reading the comments makes me realize just how critical people can be. Perhaps it’s a few too many books and can be better organized but I think there’s sort of a unique charm to it all and less of a hoarding situation.
The video itself is relaxing, a nice cadence happening with the clippers and comb. Seems like a typical American barbershop, really part of the community.
Not having to say it to someone in person changes so many people.
I firmly believe that the majority of the critical people online are fragile, scared, malicious beta-male cowards who have never been in any sort of confrontation.
The screen removes any threat and all the sudden their full of toughness.
Just my thoughts.

Seems to me that all these old school barbers somewhat connect and understand your style and the way your hair naturally sits.... I’ve seen some of your videos and notice these barbers cut your hair like your a regular it’s amazing they all have their different styles of cutting hair and producing the almost same quality cut just comes to show many ways to skin a cat and get the same result I truly enjoy your videos from quiet haircut sessions to those who tell you their history it’s so pleasant

OMG! He combed his hair out with a natural rake aka as a cake cutter! Priceless!! I wore a huge afro back in the day and that's what I used to comb my hair out. Love the green sign that says "Customers Do Not Answer Phone." LOL!

Yes! I grew up going to this Barber shop. Always had a chat with the barber that's a Pittsburgh Steelers fan lol Since I moved about a decade ago, o wonder if they're all still there. Great vid!
What a great video! It’s easy to see why he keeps them coming to his chair all these years. True craftsman. I found it interesting that he used so many tools to do the job. It shows that he is always learning thru his years of barbering to adjust with the times. Loved the final touches and communication. Thanks for sharing!

@@HairCutHarry The shop that sticks out the most is my trip to Hong Kong. All the barbers were in their 70s and the shop had been around for a long time. Kolkata, India, small town Italy, and Corfu, Greece were others that stick out. I love the vibe that comes with a shop tgat is old. Just a great feel to it.

When my son was a boy I took him here to get his hair cut by another barber. This place has been here for years and was a staple in the community.

Well what magic you work to find these amazing, unique barber shops! This guy is one of those you could listen to for ages. I bet he has some stories! His shop just excites the mind, is it a library? is it a barber shop? doesn't matter, a slight part of me thinks "organise" but then the majority says "that's what makes it interesting". I do hope you made an after video and asked him questions, because that dude is one interesting character.
