I just realized that about 5:00 Mike is playing the meldody that I know as the head of BRUZE, the first track on Bob Berg's CYCLES album. Know it quite well because I transcribed it when CYCLES came out. Time flies. TH-cam is fantastic.
Many here will know, but for those who might not, "Fat Time" was what Miles called guitarist Mike Stern. Later on, Mike was thinner and then was simply called "Time", according Mike Stern in an interview.
Watching a recent interview with Mike I was brought to all this wonderfulness. How has this not been watched more? Was raised with Mahavishna Orchestra, Billy Cobam, am from St Louis, the legends abound and are still relevant.
Absolutely beautiful. How does he just push those notes out of the trumpet? It's like his notes take on their own shape and change at will. It's like his sound is subtle and delicate one moment, and then comes out blasting his notes out with impeccable clarity. The one-of-a-kind timing of Miles Davis is legendary. He talked about what his thoughts were on the subject in an interview once. It's like he hits you when you least expect it. Like my cats, striking at you hard and fast right out of the clear blue. You NEVER see it coming!
Also.. how does he do it in that position with his neck in a down position . I would think it's impossible to blow notes out of a trumpet with that body posture.
@@edgartellez4394 The situation is, that you don't know. Neither you, or anybody else, knows what provokes the position where you get the most dynamics and comfort. Would some pianists get a better view of the keyboard on the piano standing up? Whose idea was it to make a bench to sit at while playing piano to begin with? What compensations for holding the trumpet low in this position, allows this? Answer: you don't know. Neither does anybody else.
Somebody said this one day, and i caught it a long time ago, but never stated it myself... I love how the live versions and concerts taped can came out as totally different songs like alternate takes that didnt make the cut, which i could see happening too- when you go back and see the many takes on the complete jack johnson project.. Probably keep the reels going, play through it, that s*** expensive. 😂😂😂😂 legendary, before my time, but i love it i dont care. Listen to the 40-80s era over alot of modern day stuff
HA! Catch Stern playing the line from his tune "Bruze," which he first recorded on his 1983 album 'Neesh' and later recorded on Bob Berg's 1988 album 'Cycles."
This is a great clip from the beginning of Miles's European come-back tour in '82. I love Copenhagen and also the "Montmartre" where also was in the 80s, unfortunately not during Miles's concert. Do you have more clips from that show? I have some but with very bad picture quality and I'd love to see them again in good quality. Please post more clips of that concert!!! Miles Davis forever!
I think what he's trying to say is that regardless of his heavy weight Mike was pretty agile musically... Jokes aside. I think he was just as good as in his solo career!
I have wondered about this Strat as well, it had a lot of work done on it, bigger frets slanted bridge pickup and Dimarzio FS1 pickups.....maybe stolen? sold for drugs? 🤔😒
Miles Davis was asked about Jimi Hendrix. & He said he was a true artist! How? "Machine Gun!" Man, Vietnam, He took everyone There that night! Those of us, who were at the Fillmore East. New Year's Eve 1969

Mike Stern will and will always the best on the Fender Strat. Period.
Thanks Rick Beato for reminding me of Stern. Saw the We Want Miles show in 1982 at UMass....one of the best concerts of my life
I saw him back then at a ballroom in Boston’s theater district. 81-82
Marcus Miller back then. WOW!!! 👍🎵

I knew Marcus Miller was a force of nature the first time I saw this band...I was like "who is the bass player, he's killin!"

This is some new stuff for me too , I’m in St. Louis also 👊🏻👍🏼
The priceless faces of all the musicians during that "guitar" solo ... INCREDIBLE !!!
Marcus does stuff on bass that is simply unbelievable
Astounding footage, really! And in great quality to. 😊😊😊
Man with the horn, brings memory ; I stod out side Montmartre for hours to get a ticket , Thanks ,
I hear John Schofield in his tone and phrasing. Masterful playing with a nod to another master. Respect! 🎸
Yessssss! The man with the horn! The Best fusion album!
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE post more of this concert! I've waited 35 years to see this material. I would truly be so grateful I can promise you. 👍👍👍
Did he post more of this concert?
@@erickmorales8285 Not as far as I am aware, unfortunately. But Vintage Music Experience channel did.

i love this return of miles davis on stage. some passages were magical ...

The master at work
"Fat Time" was Miles Davis' nickname for Mike Stern.
I did not know that.
Miles liked Mike's time feel, and Mike was a bit "Huskier" back then as you can see...
mike solo is very crazy n fine.
sounds are in blues o metalic.
i want his solo album
Thumbs up for Miles staring into Mike Sterns solo
This is "Ife". It was the only tune to make it from the 70s, however, lasted about a year or less on Miles' set list
7:25 "This Mike dude is out of this world" "Yeah, I know right."
saw Miles in St Louis at the FoxTheater in about 1987 saw it with whitie, wow that was as crazy 🤪.
wonderful !
HA! Catch Stern playing the line from his tune "Bruze," which he first recorded on his 1983 album 'Neesh' and later recorded on Bob Berg's 1988 album 'Cycles."
I knew I recognized that line. Was that on upside downside too?
@@pjjmsnNot on Upside Downside but if I’m not mistaken he also plays a bit of those lines on the track No Notice on Time in Place.
haha the cameraman's like "let me zoom in real close while Miles empties his spit"
que gloria!!! alabado sea miles desde los cielos
Wrong name for this performance, the right tittle is "Ife", old tune from the '7Os...
@5:18 Mike starts playing his tune Bruze.
I love the ending of this. I picture Miles saying that's enough of that bullshit and he just abruptly ends the song! 😂
4.35 that magic moment!
For me, Mike was the best guitarist that Miles ever employed. Just my view.
Wow........
Play dat funky music, wite boy!
Good bass player
Miles is literally high as fuck hahaha Mike Stern is incredible... the whole band is on fire really!
A deep thinker
killer!..thx Rythmecharlie!
still love it!!

Miles Davis forever!
Stern playing a strat.
thanks for this great share - any chances for more from that concert?
Marcus kills it but without the tone we know from him today... Much less treble.. Dare I say it, a bit more 'Jaco'?
Even though he weighed twice as much as he does today, Mike Stern never played as good as he did in those years in the band with Miles.
this is such an interesting comment to me, what does weight have to do with how someone plays?
@@elahem6940resonance?

This track is definitely called "Ife".
When Miles decided you were done...you were. haha
I wonder if Mike still has that Strat?
I have wondered about this Strat as well, it had a lot of work done on it, bigger frets slanted bridge pickup and Dimarzio FS1 pickups.....maybe stolen? sold for drugs? 🤔😒
@@poisedforduty He tells the story that it was stolen I believe at JFK airport
pazzesco....e meno male che in quel periodo non era in forma ,neanche un po'.....
Is there anymore of this concert, please?
Titre jungle ! Stern . Miller la verticalité de l est et l etendu cote ouest .
Cannot we see the full concert?!
- Could you upload the full concert?
so thats why mike sterns nickname was fat time
.👍
Miles was transfixed by Stern's solo.

wow, like copenhagen jazz...
What's in the leather pocket in Miles' trumpet?
wireless mic transmitter. he needs the pouch because 2:43
Tape Recorder .. He used to record his concerts.

he might have been thinking about Hendrix when he made this song?!!!
What kind of mouthpiece is that? 90 degree something weird.

Haha.miles and that look ,
WHO'S HERE AFTER RICK INTERVIEW?
Should be called Fart Time
looks like stern got too hot for miles and he doused his flame
is too fat time.
Miles looks like he's in bad health here
If you considering injecting heroin into your blood everyday as not being halthy, by all means!
@@christiaandemarezoyens4720 he was clean here, but was not in good health ever since the end of the 70s
