Ed Bickert. Deeply great player played a Telecaster exclusively since finding it to be suitable for all types of session work etc. Apparently he used Gibson humbucker up at the neck. But his playing was so tasty and polished. His approach was always swinging and interesting so that he really didn't sound like anyone else.
Love this. Love Mike Stern. Love Miles. So good to hear these behind the scenes stories of their musical journeys. Invaluable. Many, many thanks for sharing. 🙏🏻 🎶
Miles had a knack for hiring some of the sickest guitarists for his fusion music. I second the recommendation for John McLaughlin, and also recommend the live albums Dark Magus, Agharta, and Pangaea with the insane guitar flamers Pete Cosey, Reggie Lucas, and on Magus a THIRD guitarist Dominique Gaumont.
I thought this was familiar :-) Then I saw that the full episode was posted a while back. That story about leaving the party is hilarious! Mike has the best sense of humor.
02:13 Can't find the direct attribution but recall Miles saying something like, "There won't be no real jazz records until they leave the mistakes in".
You were a good host I saw Pope & us came down from Bgsu u were with Chambers in Columbus at the time I didn't realise that was Dennis. I'm bass ass little brother pbad! Need you!
Jimmy played country music born in 1925…… its sounds swingy but its not “jazz” Ed Bickert played “jazz” he was a badass born in 1932! You’ll get way more eye brow raises from jazz cats if you name drop Bickert….. Ted Greene too! Amazing!

What a good guy, with REAL info and soulful consideration.
I love hearing Mike do MIles voice. Oh, and his playing too of course.
I couldn't find the right pathway to jazz/fusion. Mike Sterns work with Miles Davis has shown me the way.
You could also try John McLaughlin's work with Miles Davis. Either way, you can't miss.

Mike is always gracious and generous
Ed Bickert is the Canadian tely jazz man. First that I know of. And take a look at his axe, it was one beat up looking guitar!

A beautiful guy and awesome player. One of the all time bests.
My introduction to Mike Stern was his EPIC solo on Miles Davis’s “Fat Time”.

Excellent Interview . !!! Please Do Yngwie Malmsteen !!!
I think Mike was thinking of Joe Barden, the pickup maker.
You got it.
YES!
That's really strange... I JUST NOW got through watching the film and here they are talking about it.
His Miles Davis impression is kinda like Marlon Brando’s Don Corleone lmfao
Ed Bickert MIKE!!!!
More melody than patterns - exactly!
I taught Mike everything he knows. I'm very proud of him.
😎

Some guy in Canada? Really? Jeez.
Any decent guitar will do... It's the guitarist...
Would it kill this guy to do a little homework before one of these interviews? Good grief.
Imitating a black man's voice is racis'! ;oP
Even as a joke your comment is stupid. Miles' speaking voice was unique.
@@diegorhoenisch62 Still went OVER your head tho didn't it?
