This song was written by the late, great Mac Davis. He originally offered the song to Sammy Davis Jr, but Sammy turned it down because he said "I didn't grow up this way". But he knew someone who did grow up this way - Elvis. So the song was offered to Elvis and the rest is history.

Mac Davis didn't write this song for Sammy Davis to sing. He wrote it, and thought of Elvis singing it. Do you research! Mac has written many songs for other artist. But not this one!
I think you would really like to study Elvis background. Elvis was not only born in the hood, he grew up in one of the poorest neighborhoods in THE poorest time in America, the Great Depression. He grew up dirt poor, in a shack his father built with no running water and no electricity. His twin brother died during childbirth, and the Presleys were so poor that his brother had to be buried in a shoebox.
A lot of people only know Elvis the King! they have no idea where the King was born and raised.
And his father went to prison. His mama had to do it all with help from the church.

He's right. @@DexTVReacts . Elvis mother AND father both picked cotton along side blacks to bring in a bare bone minimum income. This was the lowest of the low. Most of Presleys friends in Shakerag were black & broke and they considered the Presleys significantly poorer than them. Thats what one of his good childhood friends said in an interview for the great Elvis movie that came out last year. Yet Elvis played and prayed with his black friends. Elvis' mom would make sandwiches for these kids even though they didn't have enough food for themselves. THIS is what made Presley the legend that he became in my opinion because his his generosity to poor people in his adult life is just as legendary as his singin.

Elvis was born in Tupelo, Mississippi. His family moved to Memphis, Tennessee at high school age. In both cities, they lived in poor, mostly black neighborhoods. He grew up exposed to black culture. He loved gospel music, soul, rock & roll, etc. He sang in the choir of a black baptist church while in high school. Check out “Elvis Presley and the Black Community - that echo will never die”. There are Parts 1 & 2. His backup singers were mostly lack women. Check out “if I had a dream” which Elvis had written for him to perform in a nationwide Christmas TV special in 1968. It was a dedication song.

Please keep in mind that he sang these songs during the height of the Civil Rights Era. Elvis was the complete package. He had the talent, the looks and the stage presents like no other. Elvis grew up in a black ghetto in Tupelo Mississippi. It was in 1935. He was so poor they buried is stillborn twin brother in a shoe box. He loved people he loved people. THE LEGEND Mr BB KING spent A LOT OF TIME WITH ELVIS: 'Before Elvis we had Little Black Sambo, separate black restrooms and water fountains, and colored events that kept us away from the whites', BB King noted as he mention that Presley would attend events especially designated just for African-Americans.
In June 1956, Presley ignored Memphis's segregation ordinances by attending 'Colored Night' at the local fairgrounds amusement park. The following December, King was there as Presley opened up almost unbreakable racial barriers by attending and supporting the segregated WDIA black radio station's annual fund-raising event for 'needy black children' at Memphis' Ellis Auditorium. King wrote in his autobiography that he 'liked Elvis. I saw him as a fellow Mississippian. I was impressed by his sincerity.
When he came to the Goodwill Review (the event WDIA fund raisers of 1956 and 1957), he did himself proud'. 'The Goodwill Revues were important', he wrote. 'The entire black community turned out. All the DJs carried on, putting on skits and presenting good music'. In his autobiography, King said he held no grudges because 'Elvis didn't steal any music from anyone. He just had his own interpretation of the music he'd grown up on, same is true for everyone. I think Elvis had integrity'.
BB KING: 'If anyone says Elvis Presley was a racist', charged B.B. King in the 2010 interview. 'Then they don't know a thing about Elvis Presley or music history. 'Many nights after we finished our sets and I'd go up to his suite', King stated. 'I'd play Lucille (on Elvis' guitar) and sing with Elvis, or we'd take turns. It was his way of relaxing'. 'I'll tell you a secret', King winked and laughed. 'We were the original Blues Brothers because that man Elvis knew more blues songs than most in the business - and after some nights it felt like we sang everyone one of them."

Actually Elvis was born and grew up in East Tupelo, not Shake Rag, which was nearby. East Tupelo was regarded as being “on the wrong side of the tracks”. One of Elvis’ black childhood friends said the only thing worse than being black in Tupelo was to be poor white. Essentially Elvis’ and his family were very close to the bottom rung of society, both in Tupelo and later in Memphis.

@@julialesleysheppard Hi Julie, yes it is true they lost the house next to Elvis’ grandfather when Vernon went to jail. Sometime later, well after Vernon was released, the family did move into a black section of Tupelo but it was a nice area with professional people like teachers and such. He gave the money, he earned from his Aloha from Hawaii satellite concert ( 1973), to a cancer fund ( about 75.000 dollar/ today maybe half a million). Actually the Aloha From Hawaii Concerts proceeds went to build the Arizona Memorial. Elvis believed it was important that the servicemen that died during the attack on Pearl Harbor never be forgotten. His name is on the plaque that is at the Memorial today!

The entertainment you see in Vegas today, with big names playing there while they're still on top, wouldn't exist if not for Elvis. 50 Cent said that too in a documentary. His gigs in Vegas drew in people from all over the world. I remember in the 70's when he was on your and they announced the date tickets would go on sale for his concerts you had better be there when the door opened because they were usually sold out within at least 24 hours. My mom got lucky twice in 1972 and Elvis was the first 2 concerts I ever went to.

The first time I heard this song, I didn't even know what a Ghetto was nor was I a mother, but it made me cry. I was a 10-year-old kid living in Australia but my mother explained about racial injustices and the domination by white supremacist in countries all over the world, including my own. Mum was such an empathic, loving and kind person to everyone every day. Last year, Mum died a few days after we had planned to see the Elvis movie. In memory of my Mum's legacy to me I took my own daughter to watch the movie 3 1/2 hours after my mum died. I cried when "In the Ghetto" was played with the movie credits because the words still are as powerful and true as they were 54 years ago and that is tragic! I will forever be grateful to the way my mother loved and respected everyone around her...We can only try our best to treat everyone with love and respect and believe that "Every drop of rain raises the Sea. We CAN all make a difference." Thanks! I needed that rant!

This is late 1960's. He was warned not to do this song. At some venues they would tell him his back up singers couldn't come in. He'd say if they don't come, I don't play. Try American Trilogy or If I can Dream about MLK and Bobby Kennedy. He is the King and GOAT.
You need to check out Elvis and the black community documentary on TH-cam. Also, his 68 comeback special and various performances from Vegas, mainly from 1970 to 1972. Then aunchained melody in 1977 just before his death. I could recommend so many for you to watch. Elvis king of kindness. Elvis 200 Cadillacs. There are many clips of him showing just how funny he was too, and so, so kind and generous

"If I Can Dream" - performed in his 1968 Comeback Special - a few months after MLK was murdered. It talks about MLK's Dream. Listen.
Elvis was raised poor in the South and just lived with a lot of Black folks who he saw a just folks. He just did not see any reason race should divide people up. He attended a Black church. He hung out with Black musicians and loved "Black music" - and he was right. He introduced "Black music" to the White American public who would not put "Black music" on White radio stations. He included Black performers in his backup groups and demanded they be given the same deference shown to himself. People who just listened to him thought he was Black; people who saw pictures of him knew he was White. It was at this point "important people" started talking about how rock 'n roll was going to lead our country to hell. But Elvis kept it up.

Elvis was raised in a very poor Black community in Tupelo, Mississippi … one of four very poor white families living in that community. So yes, Elvis knew what it was like to be very poor. His friends were the black children he grew up with, so he always had a strong affinity with Black people & Black singers. Among his friends when he was a superstar, were Mohammed Ali, James Brown & Sami Davis Jnr. Sami Davis Jnr was offered this song, but turned it down because he had not been raised in poverty, but he knew his friend Elvis had been. So he suggested the song be offered to Elvis, & although Elvis was told not to sing it, because it could destroy his career, Elvis felt strongly that people needed to know what it was like growing up in the ghetto, so he not only sang it, he recorded it. He was a good man, he stood up for black people back inn the 60s and they tried to and did boycott him on a lot of radio stations but he did not care. He had three faithful black back up singers and they tried to make him fire the girls and he would not, he lost his twin brother at a young age and was dirt poor but would sneak down to the black churches and night clubs just to listen and be expired buy the music, and put his music on hold to serve in the Korea war. But his manager was a bad guy and he was hooked on pills and took so many pills just to sleep and perform and his heart finely sed no more. I and my family loved Elvis, RIP

And his relationships with Black artists and others. I'm glad you're another younger generation that is interested in Elvis. And yes, he was and is the greatest entertainer/singer/humanitarian/spiritual man who also humbled himself before God. In your journey listen to Elvis's gospel music. He will take you to church! He has a large charity of songs from Gospel Rock & Roll . I met him prior to his death. One of the most kind men, a real southern boy . He took me out for pizza and we had his favorite BBQ Pork Pizza a a little hole in the wall in norther Memphis.
When I had heard he died. I was truly devistated. I met him through his cousin.

Elvis was born on January 8, 1935 in Tupelo, Mississippi, in a 2 room shack of a house his dad built with money he borrowed from his boss. That's how dirt poor they were. He was one half of identical twins; the other boy - Jesse Garon - was stillborn. They were so poor, that Jesse Garon was buried in a shoebox in an unmarked grave. At Graceland they have a plaque with his name on it in his memory.
Elvis always got along with the black community and learned a lot about music from his friends of color. Also, according to the one drop rule, Elvis would not be considered white, since he has Cherokee ancestors on both the Smith (his mother) and the Presley (his father) sides of the family. His paternal grandfather, Jesse Dunning Presley, was not happy that his two sons, Elvis' father Vernon and his brother Vester, married two sisters, Gladys and Clettes who were known to have Cherokee blood in their family tree. J.D. Presley was quite the racist a-hole, often drunk and a philandering husband to Minnie Mae (they were actually separated long before they finally divorced in 1954) who was always competing with his sons Vester and Vernon and who was known to abuse his kids when drunk. J.D. was was publicly against race mixing and was in denial about the Cherokee blood in his own family tree. It was more publicly known that the Smith family had Native blood in their family tree, so when both his sons fell for 2 Smith sisters and Vernon, on top of that, was still a minor at 17 when he eloped with Gladys who was 4 years older than him, Jesse was totally pissed off.
As a child, Elvis already had many friends in the black community at the time his family was one of 4 "white" families that lived in the predominantly black neighborhood The Hill, just across from Shake Rag. His childhood friend Sam Bell said that some of the (black) kids in that neighborhood had lighter skin than Elvis (th-cam.com/video/LrFCyNMvZWk/w-d-xo.html). One of Elvis' bodyguards once said that he thought it was a miracle Elvis got into Humes High School in Memphis, because it was "lily white". Elvis wanted to be more open about his Native ancestry, but his manager "colonel" Tom Parker (real name Andreas van Kuijk) was against it because he was afraid it might cost Elvis fans (and himself money). They did have Elvis play characters in his movies though where he had Native American blood (Flaming Star, G.I. Blues, Stay Away Joe). Once Elvis had his own (apprentice) job learning to be an electrician, he saved up his money and bought his clothes in the same style that many of his friends of color wore. He was called a (forgive me, just stating facts here) "n-lover" and got beaten up several times too. Later, when he was an established star, he would not perform at places where the members of color of his back-up band/orchestra weren't allowed.

Elvis was raised dirt floor poor in shot gun shacks share cropper houses in the poorest of poor circumstances and neighborhoods in the south and he was also native American and folks forget that Jim crow crap was hard for us too . I'm native American myself and proud to call Elvis my cousin albeit distant but family is family and oh yeah he was told not to cut this and he pretty much told them to screw off and Elvis cut it anyway and he was just ahead of his time and very few entertainers today can come close to him only two Hollywood guys now can come close to him in the kindness to others dept and thats Keanu Reeves and his edgier brother from another mama johnny depp .you hear how those two are really nice to their fans and humble and not phoney well Elvis was doing that longer and he probably inspired them who knows i don't know the guys i mentioned but theyre the only modernday egalitarians that can come as close to elvis as far as not being a jerk goes..but elvis was a breed all his own and he passed before I was born and we only found out he was our kin after doing our family tree but mom and I were fans long before that😊
