    Elvis was born in a 2 room home with no running water his father borrowed a small sum to build. His stillborn twin brother had to be buried in a shoe box. Then he lived in what was considered the poor side of town in Tupelo, Mississippi until his Dad got out of prison for a hot check. At 14 they moved to subsidized housing in the ghetto area in Memphis, Tennessee. Elvis never forgot where he came from.
    Blues, gospel, country, opera, jazz all influenced Elvis.

    He is the largest selling artist of all time. Over a 2 billion recordings. His way of singing everything from gospel to opera made him a worldwide artist. You need to see the generous side that wasn't shown in the movie. "Elvis Presley King of Kindness", also "Elvis Presley A Generous Heart", but please don't forget the best doc that shows his early struggles even worse than the movie showed, it's "Elvis Presley and the Black Community", thanks for your great reaction, thanks for giving Elvis a chance. Be Blessed

    i think you will find in reality Presley was enlisted in the US army like thousands of others to do their duty for their country. To his credit it would seem he did not try to get out of it and never sung or performed in public during the 2 years. Presley said in a filmed interview in1970, that his music was a combination of R&B, Gospel and Country. His first global hit in 1956 Heartbreak Hotel was written by country folk. and was best described as Country Blues..

    The fellow in the black Tee seemed by his body language and facial expression to be bored from the start. Elvis moved naturally in his stagepresence. He did not copy or imitate anyone else whether black or white. The comment “that is why Mike was bigger” I assume is his view of Michael Jackson. Who is “bigger” is more a matter of opinion? MJ was an enormous world wide sensation. He was not a sex symbol like Elvis for obvious reasons. And I respect his beautiful voice and stage presence. Elvis did not stop “wiggling and gyrating” because of what happened in 1956-58. He moved differently as his style altered. He rocked but also was a ballad singer and more. He is in the Guiness Book of Records as the biggest selling solo recording artist ever... Well over one billion records sold. He had barely a 20 year career dying at 42. He made not public concerts from 1958-68. From 1968-1977 he sold out every concert in Vegas and on tour. He could not go overseas because his agent was undocumented. In 1973 he did a world wide satellite concert for charity seen in 50 nations by more then 1,500,000,000 viewers. He was the first to sell out 4 consecutive shows in Madison Square Garden. More Gold Records then any other artist. Multiple good friends in the black community... Including Muhammed Ali. You fellows spent more time trying to prove you “didn't lie” and little time reacting to the performance. Less philosophy and more reaction please.

  • @RubyGB

    The reason Elvis never toured overseas is because his manager was a Dutch fugitive (wanted for questioning in the murder of a woman in his hometown) who had illegally slipped into the U.S. and assumed a false identity (Tom Parker). Parker was afraid if he left the country he wouldn't get back in plus his real identity would be discovered. Other than Elvis' Army service Parker wouldn't let Elvis go without him for fear Elvis would discover how he was being ripped off by Parker in collusion with the record label or realize he didn't need Parker.

    • @MMVDupont
      @MMVDupont 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Yes, this is accurate. Elvis wanted to go overseas and perform but Parker never allowed it. He was really constrained by Parker in some bad ways in the 1970s, as I understand. (Which didn't help Elvis's spirits while dealing with his pill addictions etc.)

    • @RubyGB
      @RubyGB 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@MMVDupont Yes, Parker (born Andreas Cornelis van Kuijk in Breda, North Brabant, Netherlands) was not only stealing from Elvis, but working him to death because Parker had massive gambling debts. If Elvis had lived, with Parker's debts to casinos, bookies, loan sharks, etc there might eventually have been trouble with the mob.

    They never threaten to throw him in jail because of the way he moved. They just didn’t show them from the waist down anymore on TV and tried to cancel him. He was drafted into the army and did not try to get out of it (which was rare for famous people), nor did he want to be treated any different than everyone else. Once people started learning how generous he was, and with charities, They started looking at him a different way.

    There's so much that you should try and learn about Elvis Presley, In the song ( in the Ghetto ) when he said Do we simply turn our heads and look the other way. ..He's not just meaning that one person, but more as a society! You should check out, Elvis Presley and the Black Community, Elvis the king of kindness, Elvis a generous heart,, and of many more of his songs that would include songs of different genres ( which is basically how He Created his Own Style by combining Blues/Jazz, Gospel, etc.. Even if he wasn't totally credited with inventing Rock and Roll, he was certainly a major contributor and he was the driving force that brought his style and Rock and Roll altogether into the forefront of Music and with his and others it managed to stay , and continue to flourish! Just like Elvis Presley was influenced by various types/styles of music, so too did his music/style influence many others including the Beatles, John Lennon said that before Elvis Presley, There Was Nothing!!

    Thanks so much for your reaction to Elvis (Jan. 8, 1935-Aug. 16, 1977).
    Elvis was born on January 8, 1935 in Tupelo, Mississippi, in a 2 room shack of a house his dad built with money he borrowed from his boss. That's how dirt poor they were. He was one half of identical twins; the other boy - Jesse Garon - was stillborn. They were so poor, that Jesse Garon was buried in a shoebox in an unmarked grave. At Graceland they have a plaque with his name on it in his memory.
    Elvis always got along with the black community and learned a lot about music from his friends of color. Also, according to the one drop rule, Elvis would not be considered white, since he has Cherokee ancestors on both the Smith (his mother) and the Presley (his father) sides of the family. His paternal grandfather, Jesse Dunning Presley, was not happy that his two sons, Elvis' father Vernon and his brother Vester, married two sisters, Gladys and Clettes who were known to have Cherokee blood in their family tree. J.D. Presley was quite the racist a-hole, often drunk and a philandering husband to Minnie Mae (they were actually separated long before they finally divorced in 1954) who was always competing with his sons Vester and Vernon and who was known to abuse his kids when drunk. J.D. was was publicly against race mixing and was in denial about the Cherokee blood in his own family tree. It was more publicly known that the Smith family had Native blood in their family tree, so when both his sons fell for 2 Smith sisters and Vernon, on top of that, was still a minor at 17 when he eloped with Gladys who was 4 years older than him, Jesse was totally pissed off.
    As a child, Elvis already had many friends in the black community at the time his family was one of 4 "white" families that lived in the predominantly black neighborhood The Hill, just across from Shake Rag. His childhood friend Sam Bell said that some of the (black) kids in that neighborhood had lighter skin than Elvis (th-cam.com/video/LrFCyNMvZWk/w-d-xo.html). One of Elvis' bodyguards once said that he thought it was a miracle Elvis got into Humes High School in Memphis, because it was "lily white". Elvis wanted to be more open about his Native ancestry, but his manager "colonel" Tom Parker (real name Andreas van Kuijk) was against it because he was afraid it might cost Elvis fans (and himself money). They did have Elvis play characters in his movies though where he had Native American blood (Flaming Star, G.I. Blues, Stay Away Joe). Once Elvis had his own (apprentice) job learning to be an electrician, he saved up his money and bought his clothes in the same style that many of his friends of color wore. He was called a (forgive me, just stating facts here) "n-lover" and got beaten up several times too. Later, when he was an established star, he would not perform at places where the members of color of his back-up band/orchestra weren't allowed.

    • @jayeginn5963

      @@nycsue The exterior look of people only means so much. I remember Oprah had a show on slavery and it turned out that DNA research revealed that several people who were descendants of slave owners actually had ancestors of color and vice versa descendants of slaves had white ancestors (but that was more common knowledge because slave owners often raped their female slaves). Elvis' ancestry was several generations back and the more you mix, the less it shows. I am of, among many other things, Asian/mixed descent, with blue eyes, white skin. It's your DNA that shows what your heritage is. Back then they did not have that, so it was only known to those who knew (immediate relatives/friends). Plus the one drop rule, especially around the time it was introduced, meant that even if people only had the slightest suspicion of people being mixed, meant they were immediately "tainted".

    Mac Davis wrote this song, and Elvis recorded it in 1969 and performed it in 1970 in Las Vegas. He was warned that this song was too controversial for the times but he didn't care. If he lost fans over it, so be it. He grew up very poor so he understood the lyrics and he was gonna sing them whether people liked it or not. AND, Sissy Houston was a background singer in his group.

    Thanks for this reaction. But, Elvis DID do a lot more than shake his hips in some of the later Vegas performances! Check out "Polk Salad Annie" Live from 1970. He joked in the Vegas years how "tame" his younger self was vs what was up to in those years. Some of his standup performances from the 1968 comeback special were not exactly G-rated, either! Also, there was a bit more give and take between Elvis and some of the major Black artists of his time: he loved the music of LaVern Baker, e.g., over many years, and LaVern Baker loved his music and even performed an "answer" song ""Hey Memphis" in respose to his song "Little Sister." Elvis and Sam Cooke also liked each other's music; they had a good relationship, as I understand (although maybe people here can correct me on that).

    There were few to no white people at this time who would have recorded this song; it was considered controversial. Sammy Davis Jr., a black artist, was offered the song but wouldn’t record it because he had never lived that life. He recommended Elvis because he knew Elvis had lived this life of poverty and lack of opportunity. By about the age of 19-20 years old, he began fully supporting his mother and father and he continued to do so his entire life.

Elvis paid royalties to each songwriter, based off of HIS OWN sales. ALL Elvis' songwriters were paid, including black songwriters (Otis Blackwell's family stated that ELVIS BOOSTED Otis' fledgling career and he was even able to tour again with song royalties.)
    FACT: Elvis opened up THREE NEW REVENUE STREAMS FOR BLACK SONGWRITERS.
    1. Song Rights.
    2. Royalty checks based on Elvis' own sales.
    3. Black artists' OWN RECORD SALES would skyrocket when Elvis covered their song because ELVIS CREDITED EACH SONGWRITER ON HIS ALBUMS, no exceptions. So many Elvis fans would buy the original album or the 45 single of the original artist as well.
    FACT: Black songwriters SOLD SONG RIGHTS TO ELVIS - SO THIS IS A BIG MISUNDERSTANDING in the black community today. The truth is that Elvis Presley is credited for tearing down walls of racism in the music business. Not by words and interviews but BY ACTIONS. There is also proof that Elvis fought for the Sweet Inspirations, his black female singers that were barred in clubs and stadiums down south. Elvis would REFUSE to play music venues unless they would be allowed to accompany him AND BE TREATED WITH THE SAME DIGNITY AND RESPECT that he received. This ENDED those "colored only" entrances around the south. So Presley was actually quite the REBEL.
    FACT: Rock music IS NOT only Black Music. Rock music is also mainly made up of Country music (mostly white artists), and Gospel music (many white and black churches and artists) and the Blues (mostly black artists). Lets add to that the legendary song writers (such as Leiber and Stoller). Lets also add European, Asian, Middle East and African cultures where many music instruments used in Rock music were invented. That's where rock and roll sprang from. Elvis Presley is the only musician inducted into the Gospel, R&B, Country and Rock Halls of Fame.
    FACT: Elvis Presley was singing in the 1940s in black and white churches down south during segregation in the Great Depression, putting together/arranging new sounds, before Chuck Berry and Little Richard ever cut a record in the 1950s. ELVIS MERGED THE BLUES AND ROCKABILLY AND GOSPEL and gave it a sound and stage presentation. NOBODY LOOKED OR SOUNDED LIKE HIM…. He was absolutely one of its pioneers and he engineered a very creative style that’s inspired everyone in the business one way or another. Elvis gave credit to many in the black community. Arthur Cruddup, Mahelia Jackson, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, James Brown, Fats Domino. And they ALL sang their music FOR THE SAME REASON: TO BRING PEOPLE TOGETHER.
    FACT: Elvis' viewpoint coming from dirt poverty was profound. His twin brother was stillborn and buried in a shoebox. His home was a shotgun shack with no electricity or running water. That was his humble beginnings. He grew up in two legendary neighborhoods Shakerag in Mississippi and Beale Street in Memphis Tennessee. Elvis came from gospel and country and knew as many blues songs as BB King (BB said that!) and they were great friends as you saw in the movie. That’s the holy trinity of rock ‘n’ roll. So Elvis was absolutely a pioneer as he was singing before Little Richard and Chuck Berry cut their first record.
    FACT: Little Richard exposed the truth about Elvis about this very topic. "Elvis made my song TUTTI FRUITI bigger, and made ME BIGGER" and he said THIS: “I thank God for Elvis Presley. I thank the Lord for sending Elvis to open the door so I could walk down the road...” - Little Richard. Elvis paid his black songwriters very well. And that is THE TRUTH.
    FACT: Elvis was different, and his perspective was different than most white people of his day, especially among other whites in the South. Elvis grew up in the poorest parts of the South during the Great Depression and Segregation. And he understood the very lowest depths of poverty. Only 4 white families on his block, he lived and played with black children while living in a 1 room shotgun shack without running water and without electricity. His father built the home with a borrowed $150, then lost it because they couldn't afford to pay it back. How poor was Elvis? His twin brother Jesse Garon Presley was still born about 30 minutes before Elvis... and were so poor that they couldn't afford a coffin, so Jesse had to be buried in a shoebox. He was laid to rest in Priceville Memorial Gardens in Tupelo. A SHOE BOX. This is why Elvis REMAINED HUMBLE and did his humanitarian and social work WITHOUT lights and cameras. He never did it for fame. He was invested in young people no matter who they were.

Elvis wanted to tour the world he wanted to go everywhere Colonel Parker is the one that kept him from doing that because he knew what a huge sensation Elvis would be overseas... And he didn't want that unless he was a part of it... He held Elvis back... And if you watch the movie and paid attention to what was going on in it you know that Colonel Parker wasn't a US citizen so he couldn't go overseas so he wasn't going to let Elvis go...
    And also what you don't know is that Colonel Parker had a bad gambling problem and the reason that Elvis was at Las Vegas living and doing his shows two and three a night was because Colonel Parker cut a deal with the owner of the hotel... He was told to keep Elvis on the stage no matter what for every single show and Colonel Parker got his gambling debts taken care of...

    Going by the Elvis movie for your info on him is very misleading. There's a lot in the movie that is inaccurate. Hollywood always takes liberties in producing movies. Their so-called true stories are rarely really true. The Elvis movie is a good example of this. Small example: Elvis never wore make up on stage. He was surprised when making his earlier films that he had to have make up applied.
    For a more accurate picture of who he truly was, I suggest as others have, Elvis and the Black community. 200 Cadillacs. Elvis once bought 100 pickup trucks. Picked out the one he liked and gave away the rest to poor people who were in need of vehicles.
