Now you know why we have done multiple visits to NZ. It is just the most amazing country!
Looks like you had great weather on Milford Sound. I agree, it should be the 8th wonder of the natural World. Even when it's raining it is spectacular, as there are hundreds of waterfalls that only run when it's wet.

I’m an ex tour guide from Milford sound, you did a great job of capturing the size and scale of the mountains but hard to properly see what it’s like without being there. A few more things I have to say.. the Kea is NOT our only parrot, we have two more, Kaka, and Kakapo. As well a few parakeet species native and some introduced species. Lots of caravans and large buses come through the tunnel daily, don’t worry about that. Yes it rains lots in Milford sound, it’s better when it rains because you will see over 10,000 waterfalls

Sooo cool that you're enjoying Kiwiland! Refreshing to see that what we sometimes take for granted, is so appreciated by visitors to our little country. By the end of the vid l could pretty much understand your Aussie language.😂 The native parrot is known not as "key" but "key-uh." We have 2 other native parrots too. A bit of old Kiwi knowledge for sandflies. It doesn't smell very nice, but it works very, very well. Kerosene and olive oil. about a 50/50 mix in a little bottle mix together and apply to exposed areas. The sandflies hate it. So will anyone else not wearing it. But in places like Sandfly Point where there are billions of them, or the West Coast. It is in valuable. I mix Dettol and a we bit of petrol with some olive oil. Same results, Keeps the little vampires away.

I started driving Tour Coaches into Milford in the 1980's, in those days there wasn't any traffic lights at the tunnel entrances or lights on the ceiling. If you were going into Milford (going downhill) and another Coach was coming towards you we would swap sides and the down hill driver would put his head out of his side window and get as close to the rock wall as possible without touching the roof then stop and wait for the uphill Coach to pass by. Another trick was to get into the middle of the tunnel and then turn the headlights off for a few seconds, total blackness and a few yells from the Aussie passengers.

One of the factors Keas are getting poisoned is by the lead flashing on roofs of buildings! There are now grants available to replace these flashings with non toxic materials! Not before time! Keas will absolutely rip any rubber and plastic off your ‘anything’ just because they can! A few years ago there was a world wide competition to find the smartest animal in the world. Keas came out top! My daughter used to work at the bungee jump. She got lots of free stuff working there. Helicopter rides, Shotover jet rides, bungee jumping, wine tasting, loved it!

Love the series, and the footage is amazing. Calling off the climb of Roy's peak due the weather was a good call. The top is a narrow ridge and treacherous with snow on it. Its a 3-4 hour climb with a 1238 m height gain, in those weather condition you simply didn't have the gear and likely would have got hypothermia. Far to many tourists underestimate it in bad weather/winter conditions.

@@SarahandKeelanTravels Lived in the US as well for about a decade and did a lot of winter hiking as well as full out mountaineering, both there and prior in NZ. also worked as a professional guide in NZ at one stage as well There are major differences between in the 'snow' hiking between the 2 places. NZ snow is much 'wetter'. that sounds weird, but basically most NZ snow is mixed in with sleet/rain. That means when you get snow on the ground rather the classic powder, NZ snow will much more rapidly freeze into ice sheets which are incredibly hard and dangerous to walk over without crampons and suitable gear and training. Like what you got on the road over the Haast Pass getting to the West coast. When added to the much steeper, rugged terrain NZ mountains are than other countries alpine areas it means hikes like Roy's can with winter weather go from day hikes to full on mountaineering- sometimes in half an hour. They've had to do mountain rescues off Roy's on occasion like what happens on Mount Cook.

Really enjoyed this episode. So jelly because we want to go back to Queenstown . Made me laugh when you were kicking around in the ice. We did the same thing , ( kiwis must think , “ what are they doing?”)then it properly snowed when we left Queenstown on the way to Dunedin and it was so light and fluffy and beautiful. Our first time seeing snow. I do hope you didn’t do the very curvy ranges up the west coast. We drive down from greymouth to Queenstown and thought we had plenty of time… it rained 10 inches that day, there was waterfalls going under the road and our two boys got car sick , me even a little, because it was so windy. And missed a cruise at the other end because by distance it might not be far, but to get there takes much longer, which I’m sure you know by now. Looking forward to next episode

    Hi guy's.
Kea are very funny and cheeky to watch.
There are some really funny videos on TH-cam of them getting up to mischief 😅. One of the videos was uploaded by a young woman who filmed a said parrot stealing her underwear off a wire drying rack she had outside.
    Try searching "Kea steals underwear".
    Great video!

@@SarahandKeelanTravels yep. Did a lot of slipping and sliding but only in conditions like you documented. Back then in 1985/7 the road was unsealed… but snow is snow and ice is ice. You probably would have been ok from the Queenstown side however with a van it still would have been hairy.
