Fun fact one of Mr Murphys sons wrote to Sabaton after the release of this song saying. "Thank for for not making another country song about my father"
Sabaton's songs are 99% about military history, in some way at least. Sabaon is neutral in their story telling, so you will hear stories from all sides of war, even the bad guys (everything is relative of course). Sometimes they ask questions in their songs that makes the audience think. Overall, a great Swedish band. They do a lot of WW1 and WW2 songs, but also older stuff as well. They even made a concept album about the Swedish Empire (in 2 languages no less). You might enjoy the "Carolus Rex"-album in general, as it, among things, sings about a time in history when people did what they thought God demanded of them.
For real, Sabaton can make you feel patriotic for any country. "The red baron"/"Ghost divison" - suddenly you are german. "Attack of the dead men" / "Panzerkampf"/"Night witches" - suddenly you are russian. "Lady of the dark" - suddenly you are serbian. "Uprising"/"40:1"/"Winged hussars" - suddenly you are polish. "Counterstrike" - suddenly you are israeli. "Shiroyama" - suddenly you are japanese. "Primo Victoria" - suddenly you are british and american. I absolutely love that Sabaton just tells stories and highlights exceptional acts from all around the world.
Love when a veteran reacts to Sabaton. My middle brother is an Army Veteran, My brother was on a 6 wheel Striker in Iraq and Kuwait in the second war in the Middle East under George W. Bush. An IED hit his striker and all but my brother and his commander were killed. The lost members of the striker were literally KIDS who grew up in our neighborhood, our mom was just Mom to all of them and she saw them as her own kids, bonus kids, she was the neighborhood mom. My paternal grandfather was also a veteran, but for the Navy. He started his service just after WWII finished as a telephone operator/engineer when the voice was what powered the phones on the ships. My hat is off to you, sir, for your service. You keep doing what you are doing.
I'm so glad you enjoyed this song. Sabaton is a great band! I look forward to you discovering more of their music. I appreciate your insightful comments about PTSD.
Thank you for the reaction. It’s amazing how open-minded you must have become after starting this channel. The fact that Sabaton makes songs like this is better than any medal that these people have been awarded. This way you will be better remembered than a disdainful award.
great reaction, more Sabaton please. Sabaton is a Swedish band with a loooong list of history based music. Sabaton also has an award winning history channel that gives background to over 120 if their songs (not music award, academic, aimed at education of the public) . Im a former navy man myself (Medic), I never saw combat but i met plenty of people that did, you see photos of them before combat and them after and you can definitely see they were not the same people. Then i spent 15 years being an EMT/Paramedic and now i get asked by the rookies - "What have you seen" the amount of carnage i have seen over my 15 years was probably worth 1 day on those battlefields and i have seen a lot even to make a seasoned EMT sick.
Aye, Murphy himself said he wasn't fearless - he just felt he had to do something when his friends were being killed. That may be why he got it so bad once he got home. He wasn't just afraid for his own life but also for the lives of his brothers in battle, and there was no way he could save everyone. Part of the trauma for soldiers is the feeling of guilt when you survive and a mate doesn't, even if there was nothing you could do. We know more about these things today than 80 years ago, but still not enough. Oh, and Sabaton does express it well. Many of their songs do describe what the poor Private in the trenches feels about the war his high and mighty overlords got him into - even if the poor guy doesn't even know enough to blame them.
I think I was a little hard on Sabaton, they were probably one of the most popular bands in my battery when I was in the army. They're actually not bad, and kind of great message.
You Vietnam vets are some of the most badass men ever to walk this earth. God bless you sir and thank you for everything you've done for this wonderful and amazing country.
my grandfather is a Vietnam Vet, he got there in 67, Light Horse 3-17th first air cav, hunter killers. door gunner. he was shot down with his pilot, he couldn't move, my grandfather had to drag himself and his pilot away from the burning loach, and he said this after thanksgiving dinner and what I vividly remember him saying is "we should have been dead, why that helicopter never blew up ill never know" we lost him December 24th 2019. due to medical complications, he was 68, he earned the purple heart from his injuries, im 27 now, and growing up he wasn't just a father figure to me, he was my best friend. and I miss him everyday. vary nice reaction sir, and thank you for your service

Many of the lyrics in this song were inspired by the poem "The Crosses Grow on Anzio" which was written by Audie Murphy after the war. PTSD was also covered by Charlie Daniels in the song "Still in Saigon." For another emotionally hard-hitting song about PTSD I recommend "The Wrong Side of Heaven" by Five Finger Death Punch.

Audie Murphy. He went at 16, and this is his poetry. Possibly the most decorated Soldier by American, France, and England combined. I remember seeing zoo Hell and Back as a child.

Lately there has been very good results with some new PTSD treatments, that have shown effect on PTSD that is resistant to the usual treatments. these are still experimental but with the kind of effects as well as how the legal framework will change in the coming years i expect that many veterans will be able to receive much needed help that previously wasn't possible.

Great reaction! Just a quibble, he didn't deal with alcoholism, as alcohol made him ill. He was addicted to pills to deal with his PTS. He couldn't sleep at night, had bad dreams from the war, so the doctors gave him pills. But, the pills didn't help, so he checked into a motel for about 5 days and got off them, cold turkey. This video is perhaps what he went through, but no one really knows. Audie's main addiction was gambling. Despite money troubles, he refused lucrative offers for alcohol or cigarette advertisements because he didn't think kids should see him saying these are ok. A great man, with scars from the war.
Another Story: I served the Firefighters for over 10years, I saw human remains in the worst possible situation you can imagine, but i broke down, when I found my own Grandfather dead on his couch, the TV still running....sometines, it takes a small drop to break someones soul....
