  • A bit about how we raise turkeys and chickens together on our farm. Also, beware -- that turkey wasn't happy when I said he was cute but not super smart...

    I live in Brooklyn, NY and when I was in River head, NY I was a turkey crossing a road and I couldn't believe it. In New York City I never saw this.

      Turkeys are pretty neat to see, we have lots of wild ones around us!

    What about the protein food difference. I feed 16% to chickens which the turkeys have access to. I feed 30% to all my quail.

    Hi there!We just got some Rio Poults ourself and I’m researching everyone’s coops before we start ours. Glad I found your channel! Nice To Meet You!

    Thanks! I was wondering about raising my Cornish crosses and turkeys together. I’ve heard people say that could happen here but no one’s actually had it happen.

      We've had it happen for a few years now, and it's worked well for us! Thanks for watching. :)

    Thanks for the info! I was going to do an impulse turkey eggs purchase, but we do struggle with blackhead on our property (we sent chickens for testing and it was noted by the lab tech) and with our current set up it'll be hard to keep them safe and separated. Pass for now, but maybe in the future!

      Luckily you knew about the blackhead beforehand! Any luck with getting turkeys... a whole year later (sorry for my ridiculous late response, I don't know why this didn't get sent to my regular comment box!)

    I have give guinea keets that follow my turkey like ducklings. They can be pricks at times but they mostly protect the flock.

    The turkeys are not stupid. I have raised a lot from egg and they are not so stupid that they don’t know where the water is.

    The answer is yes I have turkeys and chickens together and they're best friends

    How do you raise them both together when they require different feed/protein %????

    • @FarmishKindofLife
      @FarmishKindofLife  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I have fed my meat birds and turkeys the same feed without issue. That's what is available to us at our small local feed mill so that's what we do. :)

      So u feed all your birds 26% or u feed everything 22%?

    So, now, I know I will have to be careful about food and drink for my turkeys !

    How long does it take for the turkey before you harvest them? We have a similar set up and would really like to add in a few turkeys each round.

    • @FarmishKindofLife
      @FarmishKindofLife  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We harvest our turkeys at 20-24 weeks. They usually dress out between 18-20 pounds. 😊

    Hi! We're considering adding turkeys to our broiler mix also! Have you noticed a lower mortality of turkeys? Also do you get them all at the same time? Or is within the same week or so ok? Thanks! - Heather

    • @FarmishKindofLife
      @FarmishKindofLife  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We have had a lot of luck with the turkeys surviving better when they are with the broilers. Without them, it's almost as if they don't know what to do with themselves or that the water is for drinking or the food is for eating. We usually get them pretty close to the same time, within a few days of each other. Depending on numbers you're working with, I would think a week might be okay -- although I haven't tried it. Good luck!

    Male turkeys can be a little “too” friendly towards chickens

    • @FarmishKindofLife
      @FarmishKindofLife  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      True, but these particular chickens go to freezer camp before the male turkeys figure that out. ;)
